Martha—James, do you realize how swiftly time is passing? December is already here and with this month the fast fading time of the year, nineteen hundred and thirty-five will be ended. Just think of it, this is the last time that we can be together this year. Oh, time is so short!

Joan—What do you mean by that remark? You are forever looking at the dark side of life. Do you want more days added to the year? You are never satisfied!

Martha—Oh no, sister, but I was just thinking of the shortness of time itself and what the end of time means for every one.

James—Yes, Martha, I too have been thinking about that Joan may think as lightly as she wishes about time but I believe it is very certain that in the grave, where we all must go, there will be no more work, nor device, nor knowledge, but rather our bodies will be a feast unto the worms and our souls will be in eternity where there is no time.

Joan—Well if you feel that way about time, I don’t. We are in this world and why not enjoy it. A person only lives once, they say. And for so many centuries they have been preaching, prepare, prepare to meet thy God, but the years revolve just the same.

Martha—Time rolls on and will continue so until the Lord’s time arrives and then He will make an end of this time state of years and centuries. But Joan do you know what will happen with you before that day and hour comes? Do you think your life will continue forever in this time state? Remember, that James just said, we all are on our way to the grave. And when we reach that state shall you be able to stand before the Son of God?

Joan—What! me stand before the Son of God? Do you mean to say that I have to appear before Him when I die?

Martha—You certainly will. Every person will have to appear before Him after death. Therefore, I said; time is so short. The Apostle Peter tells us that scoffers say, “Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning,” etc. (2 Peter 3). But, he continues, “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, like men are; nay He will come as a thief in the night,” and how soon? “Be not ignorant of this one thing”: namely, “One day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.” See how short time is? A thousand years of this time state is with the Lord the same as one day is to us. And is not only one day a very very short time for our life? Just consider, if you only had one day to live on this earth what an awfully short time that would be to you. Well Joan, you have even less than one days time to live in the sight of God. The 969 years of Methusalah’s life were less than one day with the Lord. What part of a day, then, is allotted to you for this time state? Can you term a life of three score years and ten a long time? Indeed not! If we live to become 80 years old is that a long life? Certainly not! It is spent as a tale that is told. And in how many minutes is a tale told? In a few minutes! Such then is your life, if you live to be 80 years; but, if you die sooner then it is yet shorter. Is it then any wonder why the psalmist cried unto the Lord; “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom,” Psa. 90:12? He realized that this life is but as a vapor, which is but for a moment. And he also realized his need of that Wisdom who is none other than Jesus Christ, who is from everlasting to everlasting, God’s dear Son and the only Saviour.

Father—May this precious Saviour visit us this day with His salvation. As this year of time is fast drawing to a close and has consumed millions of lives into eternity, who knows but it may also swallow up one or all of us before the bells will be ringing a farewell to it; and the whistles shrieking adieu; and the greater part of mankind walking in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries. Oh my dear children, may God impress deeply upon your hearts by His blessed Spirit the fact, that, as the end of this year is so close at hand, likewise, “the end of all things is at hand. Be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.” (1 Peter 4:7).

And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity (true sincere love; the love of God implanted in the heart) shall, or will, cover the multitude of sins, through the blood of Jesus Christ. The seat of love in the Father’s heart is in and through His dear Son and flows forth throughout all generations and centuries until the time of God’s promise shall come (2 Peter 3:9-18); then all will be eternity and time shall be no more.

As the years of time fade and die and new born years arise, may God grant us, dear children, penitent hearts and pleading cries to Jesus for cleansing and forgiveness of our sins and a heart to love and fear Him in all sincerity and truth, to keep us dependent upon Him for our every want and need for soul and body, time and eternity; and to direct all our goings and preserve us unto Himself to the glory of His three-in-one most Holy Name, so that we may realize by grace that “the time is short”, and to redeem the time, because the days are evil; walking in Wisdom, waiting for the coming of the Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
