TO THE READERS OF THE “BANIER DER WAARHEID”
My attention has been called to the criticism of certain things appearing under the heading of Church History. I trust that the readers realize that I am not the historian but merely translate from the Dutch these articles or sketches as they are published in the book from which they are taken. And in writing history the bad as well as the good has to be published, although, of course, not with an idea to spread error. It must also be realized that while translating, one cannot always leave out what appears to be or is error, as the mind is too much occupied about forming the proper sentences and keeping as close to the original as possible. However, as I do not want to give offence, I shall endeavor to eliminate such things in the future as might be dangerous to the mind of others.
JOHN VAN HASSENT, Translator
