A BOY’S USE OF THE BIBLE

3 minuten leestijd Arcering uitzetten

I heard a touching little story, which my young friends would like ‘to have heard too. It has to do with the land of Egypt. A missionary in Cairo was taking a stroll through the streets one morning before breakfast. It was rather cold, and, as he passed along, he noticed three boys crouching down together, partly covered by an old garment thrown over them all. He expected that they were smoking or gambling, but as he drew near his surprise was great on hearing one of the boy’s voices say—”Now the Lord hath said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and down from thy father’s house.” He was reading the twelfth chapter of Genesis. The missionary asked—”What are you doing?” They replied, “We are reading the Bible.” “Can you all read?” he inquired. And he found that only the middle boy could read, but the other two were listening with attention. The boys told him that they came down there every morning to read together before the beginning of the day’s work.

Are you as eager, my dear young friends, to read a portion of God’s Word before beginning your day’s work, whatever it may be?

I am greatly attached to that middle boy, who evidently loved to read the Bible himself, and longed for his companions to share in his treasure. And do you not think that the boy on either side of the middle boy teaches us a lesson of earnestness in getting to know the precious truths of God’s Word? Perhaps you know someone to whom you could read a portion of Scripture?

I do not know any more about these boys, but if the missionary was so deeply interested as he saw them reading together, we may be sure that the Lord Who knows not only what we do, but even what we think, must have taken notice of the way in which they were engaged.

It may be that the Holy Spirit might be pleased to open their hearts to receive the message of His great salvation, and lead them to flee for refuge to the Lord Jesus Christ, the sinner’s Savior and Friend. What a mercy it is when a boy or girl is led out of darkness into God’s marvellous light!

Has the Holy Spirit revealed the Lord Jesus Christ to you as your all-sufficient Savior? If so, your Bible will be precious to you, for you will long to know more and more of its wonderful truths.—G. T.
