OUR GOD SHALL COME

Psalm 50:3a: “Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence.”

THE Church confesses God to be her God; on the contrary, the world can not say it. They possess and bow before the god of the world. The form-christian who possesses nothing more than a self-will religion, can and may not say it. The little-in-faith in the Church of Christ have a strong desire at times and a right to say it, but are usually afraid. Some can and may confess, “This God is our God for ever and ever: He will be our Guide even unto death.” Psalm 48:14.

What an unspeakable blessing! God, Whom we lost through sin, sin committed in Paradise, worthy to be without God forever, worthy to be forever in hell, worthy that He shall speak to us in anger and make us suffer His fierce wrath forever; this God is our God again.

Unspeakable is the excellency of this blessing, given according to God’s eternal pleasure, given in Christ Jesus as the meriting cause thereof, given in sovereign grace, given to all who belong to the living Church, chosen in Christ Jesus before the world was made. It is a treasure which can never be lost.

This blessing comes to a poor unworthy sinner in Spiritual birth, by faith in Christ, in being reconciled to God in justification, being sealed by the Spirit of adoption which makes the soul exclaim, “Abba, Father.” “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God; and if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ.” Rom. 8:16, 17.

“Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence.” The Church of the Old Testament believed that the Son of God would come and appear in the flesh. In respect to this coming, she also spoke, rejoicing, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon His shoulder: and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, the mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.” He has come, and did not keep silence. He has come and accomplished a great work of salvation, and has spoken many good words. Many have said of Him, “A great Teacher has risen amongst us;” and, “Never man spake like this man.”

“God shall come, and shall not keep silence.” He comes in great judgments and speaks in righteousness. He came to the Jews during the days of the Old Testament and brought destruction and ruin upon them, their cities and temple. He came to the Jews during the New Testament and fulfilled His words spoken from Mount Olives to His disciples. Not one stone would be left upon the other. “The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.” Ps. 29. Oh, do see God’s coming and hear His voice in the great destructive wars of late, the terrific storms which bring fear upon man and beast, etc. Oh, that eyes and ears may be opened, to see and hear our God!

“Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence.” It also may denote the great sound of the gospel, and the very public administration of it in the Gentile world, at or before this time, for the enlargment of Christ’s Kingdom in it. What wonders were wrought upon the Day of Pentecost! God spoke from on high, and many cried out, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” Has God appeared to you unto salvation? Have you heard His voice which made you tremble? Did you hear the voice of God in the gospel to teach and comfort you? O, that Jehovah would speak with divine power to many young and old, and that the words of Jesus might be fulfilled, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.” John 5:25.

“Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence.” He comes to all His chosen ones to quicken them, to sanctify them, to draw them to Himself, to break them off in self and all things they have built up in ignorance, to deliver them of unbelief and doubt, of enemies that hate them and seek their destruction, to clothe them with the garments of salvation and the robe of righteousness, to comfort them in all their miseries and struggles, to make them dwell in a peaceable habitation, etc.

He shall speak to them and shall not keep silence. They may have a silent God for some time, trying their faith and to make them patient, but He will speak at the time of His good pleasure. We read in Matthew 15 of the woman of Canaan, and how she cried, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou Son of David.” “But He answered her not a word.” Not for some time, but on His time our God came to her and her daughter, and spoke thus, “O woman great is thy faith; be it unto thee even as thou wilt.” Jesus says in John 15, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they shall follow Me.”

“Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence.” He shall come in the final and great Judgment at the end of time, and shall speak with great power and majesty. How rapidly is this time approaching! Oh, do watch the signs of the time! When He comes with great glory, His voice will raise the dead, summon all before Him, and pronounce the sentence on all the wicked; and the world, and all that is therein, will be burnt with fire, and a horrible tempest rained upon the ungodly.

O, the Almighty and Glorious King shall not be silent at that important time. Hear His voice speaking to the multitudes on His left and right hand: “Depart from Me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.” How glad will His followers be when they hear His voice saying, “Come, ye blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.”

Dear readers, here is a brief meditation full of solemn words. Are you impenitent and careless on the broad and dangerous road? Oh, may the words by the Sovereign Spirit of God strike your heart, “Our God is coming, and shall not keep silence.” What if He would come this day, and pronounce sentence upon you in death? Are you prepared to meet our God and Creator? Harden not your heart when the voice of God is being heard! Repent, repent before it is too late!

The followers of Jesus through this howling wilderness, those strangers here below, may fear at times, that God shall come in anger, and not be silent to pronounce judgmnent upon them, but He shall say to them, “Fear not!” He shall come to bless them, and speak good and comfortable words to them, that they shall not turn to foolishness anymore.

O Lord, to us Thy mercy show,
And Thy salvation now bestow;
We wait to hear what God will say;
Peace to His people He will speak,
And to His saints, but let them seek
No more in folly’s path to stray.
