THE HEIDELBERG CATECHISM SIMPLIFIED
Q.—What do you mean by the words, “He was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary?”
A.—That God’s eternal Son took upon Him the very nature of man.
Q.—Does Christ then cease to be divine?
A.—No: but He is, and continues to be true and eternal God.
Q.—Whence did He derive His human nature?
A.—Of the flesh and blood of the Virgin Mary?
Q.—By what was His birth of the Virgin Mary brought about?
A.—By the operation of the Holy Ghost?
Q.—Why was Christ thus born of the Virgin Mary?
A.—That He might also be the true seed of David.
Q.—Why did He take upon Him the very nature of man?
A.—That He might be like unto His brethren in all things.
Q.—Was He then in all respects like unto His brethren?
A.—Yes, sin excepted.
Q.—What profit do you receive by Christ’s holy conception and birth?
A.—That He is our mediator.
Q.—What does He do for you as mediator?
A.—He covers, in the sight of God, my sins.
Q.—With what does He thus cover your sins?
A.—With His innocence and perfect holiness.
Q.—How did you become involved in the sins which Christ covers for you?
A.—I was therein conceived and brought forth.
