XXI Lord’s Day

Q.—What do you believe concerning the “holy catholic church” of Christ?

A.—That the Son of God gathers, defends, and preserves to Himself a church.

Q.—When does He gather, defend, and preserve to Himself a church?

A.—From the beginning to the end of the world.

Q.—By what does He gather, defend, and preserve to Himself a church?

A.—By his Spirit and word.

Q.—From where does he gather to Himself a church?

A.—Out of the whole human race.

Q.—To what are the members of this church chosen?

A.—They are chosen to everlasting life?

Q.—In what do they agree?

A.—They agree in true faith.

Q•— What do you believe with respect to your own relation to His church?

A.—That I am, and for ever shall remain, a living member thereof.

Q.—What do you mean by “The communion of saints?”

A.—That all and every one who believe?, are, in common, partakers of Christ, and of all His riches and gifts.

Q.—How are they all thus in common partakers of Christ, and His riches and gifts?

A.—As being members of Christ.

Q.—What further is meant by the communion of saints?

A.—That every one must know it to be his duty to employ his gifts for the advantage and salvation of other members.

Q.—How must He employ His gifts for the advantage and salvation of other members?

A.—Readily and cheerfully.

Q.—What do you believe concerning “The forgiveness of sins?”

A.—That God will no more remember my sins.

Q.—For the sake of what will He no more remember your sins?

A.—For the sake of Christ’s satisfaction.

Q.—What else besides your sins will He no more remember for the sake of Christ’s satisfaction?

A.—My corrupt nature.

Q.—How have you to act towards your corrupt nature?

A.—I have to struggle against it all my life long.

Q.—What will God do to you for the sake of Christ’s satisfaction, besides no more remembering your sins, neither your corrupt nature?

A.—He will graciously impute to me the righteousness of Christ.

Q.— For what end will He thus graciously impute to you the righteousness of Christ?

A.—That I may never be condemned before the tribunal of God.

XXII Lord’s Day

Q.—What comfort does “the resurrection of the body” afford you?

A—That my soul after this life, shall be immediately taken up to Christ, its head.

Q.—Is this the only thing included in the comfort which the resurrection of the body affords you?

A.—No; but also, that this my body shall be reunited with my soul.

Q.—What is done to the body before it is thus re-united with the soul?

A.—It is raised by the power of Christ.

Q.—What will be done to the body after it is reunited with the soul?

A.—It shall be made like unto the glorious body of Christ.

Q.—What comfort do you take from the article of “life everlasting?”

A.—That, after this life, I shall inherit perfect salvation.

Q.—Why do you thus expect to inherit perfect salvation after this life?

A.—Because I new feel in my heart the beginning cf eternal joy.

Q.—How is the perfect salvation, which you shall inherit after this life, described?

A.—As that, which “eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither hath it entered into the heart of man” to conceive.

Q.—For what end shall you inherit perfect salvation after this life?

A.— To praise God therein for ever.
