XLV LORD’S DAY Of Prayer

Q. Why is prayer necessary for Christians?

A. Because it is that chief part of thankfulness which God requires of us.

Q. What further reason can you assign for the necessity of prayer?

A. Also because God will give His grace and Holy Ghost to those only, who with sincere desires, continually ask them of Him, and are thankful for them.

Q. What are the requisites of that prayer which is acceptable to God, and which He will hear?

A. Three things.

Q. What is the first?

A. That we pray to the one true God only, Who has manifested Himself in His Word.

Q. How are we to pray to Him?

A. From the heart.

Q. For what are we to pray to Him?

A. For all things He has commanded us to ask of Him.

Q. What is the second requisite to acceptable prayer?

A. That we rightly and thoroughly know our need and misery.

Q. Why should we thus rightly and thoroughly know our need and misery?

A. That so we may deeply humble ourselves in the presence of His Divine majesty.

Q. What is the third requisite to acceptable prayer?

A. That we be fully persuaded that God, notwithstanding we are unworthy of it, will certainly hear our prayer.

Q. For whose sake will He hear our prayer?

A. For the sake of Christ.

Q. Why should we be fully persuaded that God will, for the sake of Christ, certainly hear our prayer?

A. Because He has thus promised us in His Word.

Q. What has God promised us to ask of Him?

A. All things necessary for soul and body.

Q. Where are these things found expressed?

A. Christ our Lord has comprised them in that prayer which He Himself has taught us.

Q. What are the words of that prayer?

A. Our Father, Which art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever. Amen.

My strength and consolations are where neither man nor devils can assail them. — Luther.
