RELIGIOUS FRAGMENT OF LUTHER
“The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”—James 5:16
An earnest and fervent prayer, which does not cease and become despondent, but waits and expects to the last moment, finally breaks through the air and clouds and must be heard and answered; for this is the most acceptable and pleasing offer before God, when we pray in such a spirit that it surpasses our sense and understanding.
We are, however, accustomed to desiring bad and petty things, and do not realize that when we pray we are speaking to the Highest Majesty. If God was willing to give only little things, or things in only a scant measure, He would not have prescribed for us such an excellent form and manner of prayer, for He has instructed us to address Him thus: “Our Father which art in heaven.” God lays before us and offers unto us great goods and the excellent gifts in heaven and upon earth, and it is His will that we shall ask them from Him and wait upon Him; for in every petition, namely — “Hallowed be Thy name; They kingdom come; Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven; Give us this day our daily bread” — heaven and earth, and all that they contain, are included herein. Because what is it really, that His name shall be hallowed, that His kingdom shall come, that His will shall be done? I answer: It says as much as to defeat a numberless army of devils and to devour a whole world, in one prayer.
