COALS OF FIRE
In the early days of our country, a fine master had a good slave whom he loved very much. One day, the slave went with his master to the slave market. There they saw an old Negro who was to be sold. His hair was gray. His form was bent. He trembled with weakness. The good slave im-plored the master to purchase the old Negro. The master was surprised, but he did what his good slave wanted him to do. The old man was bought and carried home.
The good slave carried the old man to his own cabin, and placed him in his own bed. He fed the old man. He gave him water. When the old man was cold he carried him into the warm sunshine. When the sun was hot, he carried him to the shade.
“What is the meaning of all this?” asked the master of the good slave. “Is this old man your father?”
“No,” replied he. “Is he your brother, or friend?”
“No,” said the good slave. “He is my enemy. Years ago, he stole me from my home in Africa. He sold me to be a slave. I am now doing what the Bible says, ‘If thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him to drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.”
