REPORT OF CLASSIS EAST
November 8, 1962
The Classis convened November 8, 1962 in the Clifton Church.
The meeting was opened with singing Psalm 123:1, reading of Philippians 2:1–18, and prayer by the moderator, Rev. M. Heerschap. The moderator extended a word of welcome to the dele-ates and hoped that the Lord would be in the midst while gathered again to be engaged in the cause of Christ.
The credentials were in order. One of the delegates, J. Sweetman, was absent because of illness; alternate A. Breeman substituted.
The following were elected officers: Rev. M. Heerschap, president; J. Vander Wende, vice president; A. Bretman, secretary.
Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.
Considering the instructions from People’s Park Church, it was mentioned that it is the duty of a consistory member to see that good order is preserved or maintained in the church.
The question was asked, Could the minutes be published and distributed sooner? Yes. How soon? Two months prior to the following Classis. Are the minutes sent to the other Classes? No. Agreed upon to do so hereafter.
A report was given by Wm. Baum about the Mission Fund. Balance at 11–8–62, $1,566.84. All collections for Missionary Kuijt are to be forwarded to the treasurer of our own Society, Mr. Wm. Baum, for recording, and he shall relay same to Holland respectively.
With respect to the usual inquiries which were made, the question was asked whether it might be possible to hold combined services for the usual prayer day services at one time. This is not too practical and presents other difficulties. It was mentioned that it might be well for each congregation to render some financial support to the Theological School in the Netherlands if possible. Discussion took place about having the moderator begin serving each of the congregations in the English language now. This would give him more practice and would lighten the burden of Rev. Lamain. It was agreeable to all. He shall therefore serve the Sacrament of Baptism, confirm members, and ordain officers as the occasion arises. For the present Rev. Lamain shall still continue to administer the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper as per the agreement of Art. 5. Classis of March 26, 1960. The Secretary is instructed to forward a letter of thanks for past services rendered. It is also satisfactory, if ever the occasion presents itself, for him to perform any of the above mentioned functions conveniently.
The next Classis will convene D.V. Thursday, April 25, 1963, at Haledon Ave. (English), Paterson, N. J.
The moderator extended a few words of thanks and hoped the Lord may strengthen the office bearers in the labors. The meeting was closed with singing Psalter 55, all 3 verses, and prayer by Elder J. Vander Wende.
