Faith in God is a blessed thing; it teaches us to throw all our trials and cares on Christ, knowing that whatever the issue, it is all for the best. It was faith that kept the martyrs firm in the midst of their fiery persecutions. It is to be feared that some Christians repose little trust in God, fearing that He will fail to perform all that He has promised, quite forgetting that, ‘‘All the words of the Lord are mercy and truth.” How needful it is to breathe the prayer, “Lord, increase our faith.” How dependent are we!

A poor old Christian woman, living in a certain city, was daily harassed by Satan on account of her great faith which the Lord had given her. It was as firm as a rock in her omnipotent God; therefore Satan was filled with wrath, and would tell her that God was deceiving her, and would not supply her with food. So fiercely would he beset her, that she would hold up her finger and converse with him, as though he were actually in her presence. One day he assailed her more violently than before, telling her that God would fail in time of real need. When she replied, in the words of her Lord, “Get thee behind me, Satan; my supplies will come safe enough: for if God had not another messenger to send, He will take you out of hell and send you.” This was enough: Satan had met more than his match, and he departed.

Well done, noble woman, will done! All glory to God, Who gives His people the victory! You have fought a harder battle than Napoleon ever did, for by faith you have vanquished Satan; you are “more than conqueror, through Him Who has loved you.”
