REPORT OF CLASSIS FAR WEST
The Classis convened October 23, 1963. at Sunnyside, Washington. On the previous evening Rev. M. Romeyn led a prayer service and spoke about Luke 15:10: “Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.”
On Wednesday morning, October 23, Rev. Romeyn opened the meeting. Psalm 84:1 was sung, and after reading Psalm 84 he led in prayer bringing the needs of the Classis before the Lord. In speaking to the delegates, the minister referred to David and how pleasant the house of God was for him; this was especially felt by David when he was deprived of this holy place and its services. What a great privilege it is that we and our children may yet have the services in God’s sanctuary in these dark times. The responsibility, however, is very great, especially for the office-bearers whom the Lord uses as instruments to direct the Church of God. The minister hoped that they would all understand this and raise their eyes continually to heaven for help.
A cordial welcome was extended to the delegates by the minister, who also expressed the earnest wish that Jesus, the King of His Church, would be in their midst.
The credentials were found in order, and all the delegates were present, with the exception of those from Lethbridge.
Rev. Romeyn was appointed president of the meeting; Elders George Feyter and Louis Bouma, assessors; Elder Van Belle, clerk.
The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.
Two members of a congregation appeared at the meeting; their case was considered and judged, after which they appealed to the next Synod.
A letter from the clerk of the Lethbridge congregation was read and considered.
The following brothers were chosen as delegates for the Synod in 1964: Rev. M. Romeyn; Elder A. Van Stralen; Elder G. Feyter; Elder L. W. Bouma; Elder J. W. Van Belle.
The translated sermons, which have been received and distributed amongst the members, are appreciated.
It was decided to send the collections for missionary work directly to the Netherlands.
Advice was asked concerning members who do not attend the services with their children. Instructions were given to admonish them earnestly. Other questions were also considered and answered to the satisfaction of the interrogators.
The delegates reported briefly about the conditions of their congregations.
Sunnyside shall be the calling church for the next meeting on October 21, 1964. The classis shall assemble, D.V., in the same city.
The expenses of the meeting, which amounted to $175, were divided proportionately.
The president spoke a few words in conclusion, and the meeting was closed with thanksgiving and prayer by Elder B. Warmenhoven after the singing of Psalm 119:1.
