MAY AN ELDER PREACH?
R. to H. asked the question; May an elder, who possesses the gifts thereto, speak a brotherly word in his own congregation?
Answer: No. The congregation requires official administration and not brotherly words. Where would it all end if elders, instead of reading a sermon, should begin to speak? No one may speak the word in the congregation other than those who have been examined ecclesiastically, (that is, by a Classis and Synod and deputies). Besides this, the offices of ministers of the Word and elders are distinct from each other. Read the forms of ordination of the ministers of the Word and of elders. Everyone should, with denying of self, use his gilts with zeal in the office in which God has plated him. No one should step into the work of another.
