IS YOUR FAITH GENUINE?
There is a difference between those who possess temporal faith and the upright in faith.
Those with temporal faith desire the benefits, but have no desire for a close life with God. It is like a young man saying, “I find nothing attractive in that young woman but I will try to win her for her great wealth. It is her riches, not her person, I long for.”
Temporal believers, too, do not desire the person of Jesus Christ; but He has a heaven and eternal bliss to give. This is the motive of their zest and show of affection to Him. But however great their seeming attempt at virtue, they lack the least evidence of pure love to God and love to Emanuel. It is a love of self, and a serving of self.
With the upright in faith, there is a great difference. The person of Christ is their great desire. The suitableness of Him gives them a great yearning and permits no rest until they possess Him. I fear for many if they should try themselves. My friend, how few there are who would seek Jesus if there were no hell or heaven! To love Christ for His person and to embrace Him is indeed an exception. Nevertheless, every true vessel of mercy however small in grace, will confess some personal experience of this truth.
