THE SACRED NAME OF JESUS
Each name of the Triune Godhead is sacred, but I believe the name of Jesus is the most sacred, and the most holy, the most precious name whereby He is known in heaven and on earth, and therefore God holds every man responsible how he uses that name. When it is used, it must be used with the highest honor, the greatest awe and respect, with bowed heart and bended knees, with conscience purged and lips cleansed with coals of fire from off the altar. When the name of Jesus is uttered, let it be to magnify the virgin birth, the incarnation, and the substitutionary work of Him who is LORD OVER ALL.
The psalmist sang of His holy name in Psa. 111:9, “He sent redemption unto his people: he hath commanded his covenant for ever: HOLY and REVEREND is his NAME.” The names of our Lord Jesus Christ in each of His offices are sweet in the ears of God His Father, as well as in the ears of every creature in heaven and all the saints on earth. The bride cries, “Because of the savour of thy good ointments thy name is as ointment poured forth, therefore do the virgins love thee” (Song of Sol .1:3). Then the prophet foretold the wonderful name in Isa. 9:6,
“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his NAME shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”
The angel announced His NAME in Matt. 1:21, saying, “His NAME shall be called JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.” Then by revelation the Apostle Paul proclaims the exaltation of that name in Phil. 2:9–11,
“Wherefore (because Christ humbled Himself) God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a NAME which is above every name: THAT AT THE NAME OF JESUS every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that JESUS CHRIST is LORD, to the glory of God the Father.”
What a decree handed down from the Triune Godhead!
The name “JESUS” given Him at His birth is the Hebrew “JOSHUA” — Jehovah saves. What a precious office to every believer that the Son of God took upon Himself when He humbled Himself and bore the shame and became the curse that He might redeem His people from sin! JESUS, or JEHOVAH SAVES, is indeed sacred, which is a word with two meanings, both growing out of the same root thought. Sacred means devoted — devoted to God and devoted to a curse; therefore, JESUS is His name as the One devoted to bear the curse for the Father’s sake. Dare any man touch that which is dedicated to God. He suffered the curse to lift the name and the honor of the Father from the mire where sinning man had degraded it. He suffered the humiliation that He might redeem a people to glorify and magnify the praises of Him who has called us.
No wonder that “Unto you therefore which believe he is precious”! (I Pet. 2:7). Unto you His name is holy and reverend. That name is precious, that name is sacred to the individual who has bowed to Him as Lord, and knows Jesus as Lord. To you He is exalted to be a Prince and a Saviour, and His name is sweet indeed. But the individual who divorces His Lordship from His office of Saviour, and wears the name “Jesus” as a cloak of a profession is taking that sacred name in vain, and God will not hold him guiltless (Ex. 20:7). Such an individual “calleth Jesus accursed” under the spirit of Satan, because the test of any individual’s use of the name “JESUS” is his attitude toward Christ as Lord, unto whom God has ordained that every knee shall bow and every tongue confess His Lordship. THAT SACRED NAME — “JESUS” — is hidden in the majesty of His Lordship, and is unveiled by the sovereign Holy Spirit.
