Dear Mission Friends,
May the Lord give that our hearts may be humbled with thankfulness that He has inclined the hearts in the generous support of the mission work in the first month of 1976. Herewith we want to say thanks to all who have supported this work. May the Lord bless you and your gifts. It was encouraging to receive gifts from the country of Australia and the country of New Zealand, not forgetting our friends at home. We are including a picture of the Landrover that was donated to the Izi Mission in Nigeria by the American and Canadian Congregations. The Commelin family appreciated it very much because they are about 35 miles from the Bethesda Clinic, and of course, there are no interstates and no bridges to cross over the smaller rivers. That isn’t so bad in the dry season but in the wet season it can be very difficult. The Commelins are in the Netherlands on furlough at this time, and Sister Cobi Van Rossum is presently working all alone at the Izi Mission post. May the Lord remember her and protect her. Rev. and Mrs. Kuijt were blessed with a newborn baby girl the latter part of 1975. We are sorry that we can’t put more mission news in the Banner at this time because Rev. Suyker is still in the hospital and it is his work to translate pieces out of “Paulus” for the Banner. May the Lord strengthen him to again perform his labors. We will give a short report of income and expenses for 1975. Total income - $53, 059.98. Total expenses were $47,198.21, leaving a balance for the year of $5,861.77. We are thankful that the expense was not greater than the income. May the Lord give us faith to look unto Him for the future. My dear friends, pray for the peace of Jerusalem.

LANDROVER IN NIGERIA
The Landrover, donated by the Canadian and American congregations for use in Izi, Nigeria.
See it passing a stream through which we had to make a sort of track. Without this Landrover we could not have done much in Izi.
At present, Miss Van Rossum has to drive the 40 km. all alone through streams and bush between Bethesda Clinic and the Anyim River.
Please, remember her and her work.

Of His Resurrection Lesson 28 Part II
The 1st Step in His Exaltation
And what about the watchmen? O, as soon as the angel descended there, they fled immediately. The watchmen were not at all interested in Jesus and would have nothing to do with a holy angel from heaven. They were terribly frightened and as soon as they recovered from their terror, ran away from there as fast as they could.
The angels spoke not a word to the watchmen. There was no concern for them at all. The interest of the angels was in those who came to see the grave, in those who felt the loss of Jesus and who thought they could not live without Him, and therefore, came to seek Him, even if He were dead.
O, how glad these women were! They had come to anoint the body of Jesus, but now, instead, were being told that He was alive again. What a marvelous day this was for them.
But do you suppose the disciples and the others who also loved Jesus (but had remained in Jerusalem) actually believed what the women told them?
Not all. We have just mentioned that there were two kinds of people in Jerusalem, but now there were two kinds of reports there in those days, too. First there was the story originating from the Jewish Sanhedrin. What was that rumor? Well, they said, “That Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Mary, was certainly an exceptional person, in that He performed all kinds of miracles, healed the sick, etc.
But, He was, nevertheless, an impious person because He said He is the Son of God and the King of the Jews. Now, that is blasphemous. Only the Messiah who is still to come can be God’s Son and our king. In order to purge Israel of this wickedness, as we are commanded by the law of Moses to do, we have condemned this Nazarene to death by crucifixion. This we managed to have done by Pilate. When we were sure that He was dead they put Him in the grave.
Since He still had many loyal followers, all strange, despicable, ignorant Galileans, we placed a guard of Roman soldiers around about His grave for security. We remembered what this seducer had told us earlier about rising from the dead. This is impossible for anyone to do, of course, but His disciples could remove His body from the grave and try to make us believe that He has risen.
These are the arrangements we made for security. But what happened in spite of all this?
The clumsy Roman soldiers slept all night instead of watching, and now it is just as we expected. The disciples came quietly to the grave and removed His body from the grave. The disciples are now spreading abroad that he has risen.
Now, you can imagine this rumor spread like wild fire through Jerusalem, because you remember the watchmen were paid off in money to tell this he.
But, the same day another story was being published abroad. This originated from the women who had been at the empty grave very early in the morning and had received the message from the angels.
Even the men from Emmaus related this story to Jesus saying, “Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre; and when they found not his body, they came saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that He was alive!”
Apparently this rumor had spread quite a distance.
But the men from Emmaus and the other disciples were experiencing the same as the queen of Sheba had.
There was a rumor being spread abroad concerning King Solomon in his days, too. It spread so far that the queen of Sheba heard of it. But the queen was not satisfied with just hearing this rumor, so she personally went to determine how much truth there was to it.
Well, she was agreeably surprised, she said, “The half had not been told her.”
There were some people in Jerusalem who were not satisfied with rumors, either. 1st: They could not believe the rumor that Christ had not risen, but secondly, even less could they believe the rumor He had risen. They needed the certainty that He was risen as much as the certainty that He had died. O, those poor, despised people were well aware that they could not find salvation in a mere rumor. They had to have the Author of salvation Himself!
It did not remain a rumor though, no, for He made His appearance five times that first day to various people. They could not live without Jesus and they need not live without Him either, for He had appeared in person to Peter, the man who had fallen so deeply. The gladdened disciples were able to report to the men of Emmaus, “The Lord is risen and has been seen by Simon.”
Who can tell me how many times Jesus made appearance after His resurrection?
Answer: “Three times” (another) “five times.” Both of you have given a wrong answer. Doesn’t anyone know it? Then we shall try to make a list of them together.
1st. He made an appearance to Mary at the grave.
2nd. To the four women.
3rd. To Simon Peter.
4th. To the two men of Emmaus.
5th. To the ten disciples in the absence of Thomas. (These five took place on the first day)
6th. To all the disciples with Thomas present eight days later.
7th. To the seven disciples at the Sea of Tiberias.
8th. To eleven disciples on a mountain in Galilee.
9th. To 500 brethren all at one time.
10th. To James.
11th. To the eleven disciples on the Mount of Olives when He ascended into Heaven.
We have all these witnesses that He has truly risen. He had died and was buried in His human nature. He also was raised up in His human nature. However, if He had not possessed a divine nature it would have been impossible. His two natures always remained untied so that even in death there could be no separation.
His body was sinless in death and it was sinless in His resurrection. And now it was not only sinless, but also immortal, death having power over Him no more. He was raised in a glorified body that is immortal and incorruptible and at the same time it was a visible body. It was not a spirit alone as the disciples had feared when they first saw Him. They thought to have seen a ghost because they knew not yet of the mysteries of His death and resurrection. But Jesus dealt with this shortcoming and asked, “Do you have any food to eat?” They then gave Him a piece of broiled fish and of a honey comb. He took and ate it before their very eyes, saying “Thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day.”
Then He opened their understanding that they might understand the Scriptures.
This opening of their hearts and minds was so necessary that they might understand God’s Word. That must have been a wonderful experience for those people!
But now, we must proceed further in our lesson. Hellenbroek closes this lesson with the question, “Who are the partakers of Christ’s resurrection?”
Answer: Those who know Christ and the power of His resurrection. Phil 3:10: “That I may know Him, and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being made conformable unto His death.”
And Paul says in another place, “--was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.”
He comprehends, in this word “our” all the elect (himself included). But he excludes, on the other hand, the whole world. He means to say there, “Christ is raised from the dead for those for whom He made satisfaction and for whom He had died. Only for those who have been raised with and in Him and who have been absolved of all guilt and punishment by the Father.
This last question is, of itself, an application of our lesson. By nature all of us lie in death and death lies in us. That is evident enough, isn’t it? But do you remain so undisturbed in the knowledge of it, without being filled with fear because of it?
While here in life you may be spared from committing gross and evil sins by common grace or restraining grace, but that shall cease in death. God’s beloved people, young and old alike, have a tendency, too, to commit sins in abundance but the Lord prevents them from doing them. They cannot do as they please but are invisibly restrained. God preserves them here in His strength and soon when in heaven they will have no more desire to sin. Nothing unclean can enter there. Only that which is pure in Christ shall enter in through Christ.
But, from the opposite point of view, there will be no common grace in hell to hinder sin. And you need not expect that consciences will be inactive there, no, they shall be even more lively than they were ever here. Do you attempt to put these things aside and say to yourself, “I want to be free to do what I want to do?” Does it go that far? O, you can be very sure that will not be agreeable to you. Read I Samuel 24 this evening. You will read there how Saul was in humble submission because David had spared his life. He said, “My Son, you are more righteous than I. You can go home in peace. I shall never harm you.” But, a few days later he had forgotten everything he had said and pursued David again in hotter pursuit than before; even to his own death. That is the way it goes, from bad to worse when you override your conscience. It goes from bad to worse, from one thing to another, just so long until you sink away in complete hardness. And then…? You sink away into eternal perdition!
O, think about this. Do not smother your speaking conscience by continuing in sin.
We have been speaking about the resurrection day and, if we have already died, you and I will be included there.
And, then, will you be on the left hand of that great judge?
Then you will see the Mediator of whom we have spoken, in His glorified and immortal body coming to judge and making the separation. But you certainly will not be at ease there as you are now sitting before me.
May the Lord graciously deliver your poor soul from the spiritual deadness in which you lie and give to you the assurance that you share in the resurrection of Christ. That would be the only comfort in life and death.
So be it.
A MARVELOUS HEALING MIRACLE
I have been asked to reprint an article about the marvelous deliverance of one who was possessed of a devil at the time of meeting Skipper Treffers. It is several years ago that this event took place. I will gladly again give you an opportunity to read it.
“And these signs shall follow them that believe; In My Name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.”Mark 16:17, 18
A remarkable incident out of the past was told me about a man who was in bondage, and the marvelous manner in which he escaped the grip of Satan. Among my old friends there are still some who have known Skipper Treffers. It was known that the Lord had used him for many people.
One day he lay ashore, for he could not move with his sailboat, there being no wind at all, not a leaf was moving. At a certain moment he said to his servant, “Hoist the sail, loosen the ropes, for we are going to sail.”
“Master, there is no wind.”
“I tell you to hoist the sail and loosen the ropes.”
The servant did so, and immediately the wind blew. They sailed swiftly between the farms and other homes. When they had sailed some distance, the wind ceased to blow, and the barge stopped. The skipper said, “Fasten it.” It was close to a farm house.
Skipper Treffers left his ship, walked across the yard, opened the upper door, and shouted, “Company!” Upon this a woman came and stood at the lower door.
The skipper said, “Woman, where is your husband?”
“My husband is not here.”
“Woman, I ask you: where is your husband?”
“Oh, skipper, my husband is not here.”
“For the third time: where is your husband?”
“Well, skipper, if you want to see my husband, follow me.”
He followed her through the back room and the living room to a secluded side room where there was no chair or any other furniture. In this darkened room he saw that there was only a large iron cage in which a senseless person was walking back and forth.
She said, “That is my husband.”
“Woman, is that your husband?”
“Yes, skipper, that is my husband.”
Since he tore everything to pieces, he was almost naked. He could not speak, and as wild beasts in their cages walk back and forth when you stand before them, so this man who was possessed with a devil walked back and forth behind these iron bars.
“Oh woman! What sin has brought to pass! How was your husband before and how long has he been in such a state?”
From what she told him, the skipper perceived that he could be a man who possessed the beginnings of spiritual life. That made a startling impression on him. To speak a word to him was impossible. He was at the point of withdrawing from him, but could not go. He said, “Woman, we should seek the Lord’s face in prayer, let us kneel before Him.” So they knelt upon the tile floor, and strange as it may be, the poor man in the cage followed their example. He took hold of the iron bars, and sank down and knelt with them. Skipper Treffers received an opening in prayer, and spoke to the Lord about this case, for the Lord has power to loose those that are bound. They arose from their knees, and Mr. Treffers said, “Woman, open the cage, your husband is delivered.” It was noticeable in his appearance. He began to speak. In all these years he had never spoken a word.
Mr. Treffers said, “Wash and clothe him. I will wait in the back room.” When the man was delivered from this miserable prison both inwardly and outwardly, he came and sat by the skipper. Then those two children of God conversed earnestly with each other. He that had been possessed with a devil was sitting clothed, and in his right mind.
Then the woman asked, “What did my husband have?”
He said, “I think he was possessed with a dumb devil.”
This conversation lasted for some time, but at last it was time to part. The wind had started to blow, so he could sail again.
Some years passed before they saw each other again. One morning the farmer said to his wife, “I am going on a trip today.”
“Where are you going?”
“I don’t know.”
He felt he should take a little more than 500 guilders with him. That was a big sum of money in those days. Traveling then was not as it is now. They traveled by horse and wagon or by steamship, but mostly on foot. After he had traveled a few hours, he was compelled to enter a home. He was surprised to find a company of religious people there. To his astonishment he saw Skipper Treffers among them. That was an unexpected meeting. The day passed swiftly in religious conversation.
As they left the farmer said to the skipper, “Now be honest, are you not in want?”
“No, no....there is no lack.”
“Yes, there is,” said the other man, “there is something wrong.”
“No, no....I can not complain about the Lord’s dealings.”
“That may be, but you must tell me what your trouble is.”
At last he told him his troubles. Lately he had had some expenses on the barge. It needed a new sail and some other things, and he could not pay the bill.
“How much is the bill?”
“Well....well....it amounts to a little over 500 guilders; but that will be all right, if I may be a little fortunate in sailing.”
The farmer said, “I had to take exactly that amount with me this morning, so here you have it.” This is the way God used these two men to help each other.
As Skipper Treffers sailed along, he often stopped to attend the religious gatherings of the older people, which were members of my first congregation. He was not a preacher on the pulpit, but a child and a servant of God, both by casting out devils, and by delivering them from the power of the devil.
How different life is now, since these miracles belong to the past. How little power proceeds from the Word of God, and how little do the works confirm it!
We must also add that there was unity then, both internally and externally, and there were strong ties one to another. In those days God used His children to help one another. Thus unity developed among them. The Lord performed wonders in those days. Now everything is insured by the idol of insurance of our days. Through unbelief we shut out the preserving power of God, and then there is no room for a miracle-working God.

SANCTIFICATION
A letter written by John Berridge
Dear and honoured Sir—I have just received your golden treasury by the hands of my dear brother of Yelling, and thank you kindly for the pretty little valuable present.
In May I began to itinerate after a five years’ discontinuance through illness, and kept on, though with much feebleness, for two months, when I was seized with a smart attack of my old complaint. I am now, as the world account, a scold miserable, but lying at Jesus’ gate; and am reduced to a mere Sunday preacher: the Lord be praised that I am not wholly laid aside. What a fund of corruption is lodged in the human heart! Every stripe I receive, my Master’s word tells me, I have procured for myself. Lord, I own it; sanctify the rod, and make the furnace purge away my dross. I trust the Lord has taught me to hate sin, and to hunger after righteousness; yet I am often seeking after holiness in such a manner as stiffens my heart, brings a dry and lean soul, and makes my eye lose the sight of Christ’s salvation. This convinces me there is a mystery in the manner of obtaining sanctification that we are not soon acquainted with. We are apt to think of sanctification as a separate work from justification, following after it and wholly independent of it; whereas they seem to be connected works, and inseparable from each other, one resulting from the other.
The clearer sight we get of Christ, and the sweeter views we have of our adoption, the more our hearts are filled with love, joy, peace, and all the fruits of the Spirit, which is sanctification. When Jesus gives a clearer view of His dying love, He always accompanies that view with the graces of the Spirit. The heart is filled at the same time with pardon and holiness, with justification and sanctification. So that if we desire to be holy, we must seek to be happy in the Saviour’s love, must seek a clear evidence of our adoption, and labour to keep it clear. As our views of Christ are more cloudy and discouraging, our bosoms will be more barren of heavenly tempers. A man may be constitutionally meek as the lamb, constitutionally kind as the spaniel, constitutionally cheerful as the lark, and constitutionally modest as the owl, but these are not sanctification. No sweet, heavenly, humble tempers, no sanctifying graces are found but from the cross. Jesus says, He that eateth My flesh and drinketh My blood hath (or possesseth) eternal life; where He showeth how eternal life (which must comprise the whole of spiritual life) is obtained, viz. by eating His flesh and drinking His blood, i.e. by feeding on His atonement. Thus all divine life, and all the precious fruits of it, pardon, peace and holiness, spring from the cross.
And is not this intimated by St. John, when He says, “One of the soldiers pierced His side, and forthwith came there out blood and water?” They did not follow one another, but came out together; the blood betokening pardon, the water sanctification. Carnal men make the water come out first, and the blood follow; they seek a little obedience first, and then hope to have the benefit of the blood. Professors often make the blood come first, and the water follow; i.e. seek first to be justified, and then to be sanctified. But I believe experienced Christians make the blood and water flow together; get holiness by clear views of the cross, and find eternal life by feeding on the Saviour’s flesh and blood. Was not a lamb sacrificed every morning and evening in the Jewish temple? And was not this intended to show us, that we must feed on Christ’s atonement every day, and derive all our life, the life of peace and holiness from His death?
Upright people are often coming to me with complaints, and telling me that since they received pardon, and have been seeking after sanctification (as a separate work), their hearts are become exceeding dry and barren. I ask them how they find their heart when Jesus shows His dying love. They tell me, full of peace and love and every heavenly temper. Then I answer, Jesus hereby shows you that holiness as well as pardon is to be had from the blood of His cross. Labour therefore to get your conscience sprinkled every day with the atoning blood, and sanctification will ensue of course; the blood and water flow together.
When Jesus only gives a smile, and seals some promise on the heart, though it be not the seal of pardon, it occasions a sweet transforming change in the soul. And all fancied sanctification, which does not arise wholly from the blood of the cross, is nothing better than Pharisaism; and if persisted in, will end in Pharisaism. For when sanctification is considered as a separate work from justification, and wholly independent of it, by and by it is considered as a justifying work itself; and men profess and preach they are first to be justified by the blood of Christ, and then by their own obedience.
O, dear Sir, if we would be holy, we must get to the cross and dwell there; else notwithstanding all our labour and diligence, and fasting and praying and good works, we shall be yet void of real sanctification, destitute of those humble, sweet and gracious tempers, which accompany a clear view of the cross. But mere doctrinal knowledge will not give us this view; it only proceeds from a lively faith wrought in us by the Prince of life. A legal spirit helps forward our mistake in the matter of sanctification. We would fain divide the water and the blood, fain would separate sanctification from justification, that we may make a merit of it. Whereas if they are inseparably connected, and both pardon and holiness spring from the blood of the cross, the root of merit is dug up thereby, and Christ is all in all.
Another thing confirms our mistake, which is, that all heavenly graces are called fruits of the Spirit. Hence we conclude that pardon must spring peculiarly from the blood of the cross, and holiness be a separate work of the Spirit. But though all gracious tempers are the Spirit’s fruits, yet that fruit is bestowed at the foot of the cross; eternal life is found at Calvary by eating the Saviour’s flesh and drinking His blood....
May the Lord Jesus bring and keep you and yours at the cross, to see and sing the wonders of redeeming love, till you are called up higher to sing eternal praise with all the saints. Grace, mercy and peace be with you, and with your much obliged and affectionate servant,
Everton, August 18th, 1773

PRECIOUS TREASURE
Once more we come before our God;
Once more his blessing ask;
O may not duty seem a load,
Nor worship prove a task.
May we receive the word we hear,
Each in an honest heart;
Hoard up the precious treasure there,
And never with it part.
To seek thee all our hearts dispose;
To each thy blessings suit;
And let the seed thy servant sows
Produce a copious fruit.
Bid the refreshing north wind wake;
Say to the south wind, Blow;
Let every plant the power partake,
And all the garden grow.
Revive the parched with heavenly showers;
The cold with warmth divine;
And as the benefit is ours,
Be all the glory thine.
Hart
Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. The Lord God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds’ feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places. Habakkuk 3:18, 19.
Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. James 5:16.

BOEKENNIEUWS
