PRAYER DAY

In this month Prayer Day services are held in our churches and other churches, too, for the needs of the fields, the cattle, the industries, and for all the wants of the countries and the world, because we are not only dependent upon the Lord, but also upon one another. The king himself is served by the field. May the Lord bless the labors of our hands in this coming season.

We are prayerless, and we have no prayer, but may the Spirit of prayer and supplication be given to us out of free and sovereign grace. That it may please the Lord to give us in our inner chamber a prayer before we go to church. May the needs and wants of our nation, of our President, of all the governors, of all those that rule our nation, our states and our cities, be brought before the Lord.

We are living in perilous and dangerous times. Righteously the Lord could bring famine, pestilence and war upon us. Where do we see an acknowledging of the Lord. The Name of the Lord is blasphemed, God’s day is desecrated, and life in general is worse than it was in Sodom and Gomorrah. The man of sin reveals himself more and more in ruination and destruction. It should be a wonder to us day after day that we are not consumed.

The Lord has spoken to us also in this winter. He has shown His power and His majesty. Some states were covered with snow, worse than it has been seen in a hundred years. In other states it is so dry that there is almost no moisture in the ground, so that they will have no crops if the Lord does not work a change in the weather soon. The Lord is angry, and He shows that He is God.

May we take it to heart, and may we learn to bow before Him in truth and uprightness, for the first time in our life, or by renewal. May the Lord remember us and our generation, for of ourselves we can only harden our heart, and go farther and farther from the Lord, making ourselves ripe for hell. We must be regenerated, and if the Lord teaches us to pray as He did Saul on the way to Damascus, then we shall later learn, as that same blessed Apostle says in Rom. 8:26, “For we know not what we should pray for as we ought.” May we then also know for ourselves: “But the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.” We read about Christ, the great Intercessor in the Garden of Gethsemane in Luke 22:44: “And being in an agony He prayed more earnestly.” Prayer was Christ’s sharpest weapon. May that grace also be given in our heart on all occasions, but especially at this time. Prayer must be offered for the Church, for judgment must begin at the house of God. I Peter 4:17.

Oh, that the Lord would visit His Church. He is hiding His face so much from the House of Jacob; and that all on account of our sins. God’s Word is still among us, but where is the fruit among young and old, great and small, unconverted and converted people? Where do we hear that there is an awakening and an uncovering of the hypocrites? That would also be a blessing for the church, as well as the establishing of God’s children.

May the Lord remember us personally in this season, and also our families; that they stay with the truth, and that it may bear fruit that will be revealed in their daily life. Matth. 7:16: “Ye shall know them by their fruits.” That applies to ministers and members both.

May the Lord remember us in mercy in His beloved Son Jesus Christ, and teach us to pray according to His revealed will and to His glory.

May He bind us with all our needs for time and eternity at His throne.
