CHRIST THE PHYSICIAN FOR SIN SICK SOULS

But when Jesus heard that, He said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician but they are sick.” Matthew 9:12

We read in the gospel of Mark that a certain woman which had an issue of blood twelve years, and had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse, when she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched His garment. For she said, if I may touch but His clothes, I shall be whole. Then straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague.

Why, my friends, are there so many sin sick souls in our days? It is because they have no knowledge of their spiritual disease; thus have no need of healing. For such who are aware of this condition we find a word of encouragement: “For I am the Lord that healeth thee.’ Ex. 15:26. It was the commission laid upon Christ to be the Physician for all hopeless soul’s conditions.

The cause of this spiritual disease is, SIN. It is the disease of our heart. It is the transgression of the just law of God. It is that what we inherited from our covenant head Adam. Sin destroyed all power in our soul to return unto God, having lost that glorious image wherein Adam was created, being an image bearer of God, the crown piece of God’s creation. Sin deprived man of bodily rest: “In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread.” Gen. 3:19. Our soul is sin sick, and seeks its pleasure in our separated state from God. For Adam there was nothing so beautiful as the sight of God. Sin has entered in, and there is nothing so loathsome as to be separated from Him. We are now dead in trespasses, and became liable to the bitterness of eternal death, our bodies are doomed to the grave, and our souls are exposed to the just wrath of God. A miserable state indeed, without God in the world.

Do you pine away in such a thought, can such a wretch as I am still be reconciled with God? For such who have SPENT ALL; all their fair promises, all their good works, and self righteousness; there is a ray of hope. Christ the great PHYSICIAN, invites such: “Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matt. 11:28. It is Christ the anointed of the Father. It is Jesus the Savior: “Neither is there salvation in any other; for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” Acts 4:12.

“Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread?” Isa. 55:2. Christ is the living bread which came down from heaven. He left His eternal home to save sinners. Behold Him as a Physician, there is healing under His wings. Are you Sin-Sick, He is skillful, though your sins be rooted deep into your heart. He promises to break the stony heart, and give a heart of flesh. He is a patient Physician, long suffering, and compassionate, loving, self denying, and faithful to the end. Always ready to help, He sleepest and slumbereth not, His ears are always open to your cries. “Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool”. Isa. 1:18. “He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed.” Isa. 53:5.

In the cure of our souls two things are essential. We are guilty and must be justified, that is His work, we are polluted, and must be sanctified. He offered His body to the sanctification of His people. He purposes both. His blood for atonement, and water for cleansing. There is none like Him. No disease He cannot cure, and no disease He will not cure. “Though thou hast played the harlot with many lovers, yet return again to me, saith the Lord.” Jer. 3:1. “Look unto Me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.” Isa. 45:22.

Why is this offer of salvation neglected by those who think themselves to be WHOLE? It is their self righteousness. Sin has blinded the eyes of Adam’s posterity, who wilfully reject to accept their total lost state and condition. Our hearts by nature are so blinded that it is past feeling. The law of God is spiritual. We have sinned against a righteous God. This law required perfect obedience to God. Ignorance of that law discovers no disease, as by nature we remain totally depraved. Man is ignorant of God who made man upright. The whole head is sick, the whole heart is faint. Many consider themselves as having a good heart, good intentions, good desires, but live in total rebellion; having found many inventions. They think themselves whole in their own esteem, though not perfect, not worse than others. They boast upon the love and mercy of God. Satan has blinded their eyes, and they have never learned the righteousness of God who is just to condemn all. They are given over to the imagination of their sinful hearts.

It is Christ and Him only who can open the eyes of the blind, and awaken a sinner to his lost state and condition. It is He who opens the eyes of the destitute, to the hideousness of their deep fall in their covenant head Adam. They learn to know themselves as totally leprous, and totally defiled, begin unclean from their head to the sole of their feet. By further discovering grace, they learn to know their impotency of ever restoring themselves into the favor of God. The older they become, the more they learn to abhor themselves before Him; but are also encouraged as they read the word of God when the blessed Spirit of God applies these words unto their hearts: “Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound.” Rom. 5:20. It is here where they may view the riches of grace, as Christ anoints their souls with eye salve. It is in bitterness of heart they receive a glimpse of the greatness of the PHYSICIAN who restores unto them the amazing LOVE of His heart to a self condemned sinner. It is a perfect love which He has for them, and they may learn to say: “We love Him, because He first loved us.” I John 4:19. O, His condescending love: “Christ died for the ungodly” Rom. 5:6. It is all His unfathomable love. There is no cure without His redeeming love. May we but love Him more. It is the love of the triune God; It is the FATHERS electing love, the SONS redeeming love, and the HOLY SPIRITS applying love. May we learn to know Him as the chiefest of ten thousands to our soul.

Dear reader, does not the love of such a PHYSICIAN far exceed all your earthly expectations? He still invites you: “Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and He will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.” Isa. 55:7.

Hope in God, ye waiting people;
Mercies great with Him abound;
With the Lord a full redemption
From the guilt of sin is found.
