YOUTH CONFERENCE OF CLASSIS FAR WEST

The 1977 Youth Conference for the Classis Far West congregations was held on July 30, 1977, in Fort Macleod, Alberta, Canada. Rev. Heerschap opened the meeting, and after singing and prayer, he spoke of the mercies of God and the brevity of life as written in Psalm 103.

In his first address, Rev. Suyker, who had travelled from Iowa to be our guest speaker, talked about the Catholic Christian Church in its unity, holiness, catholicity, and its Christianity, ending with the most important question, “Am I a living member?”

After coffee, group discussions were held on the problems of the youth of our congregations and the solutions whereby these difficulties could best be resolved, after which a general discussion was held, with a spokesman from each table responding. Many thought-provoking questions and solutions were brought up and the importance of Christian schools was emphasized.

A short reading concerning the difficulties of two Christian young men living behind the Iron Curtain was then presented.

After lunch, which was donated and served by the ladies of the church, the meeting reconvened with Rev. Suyker’s second address, wherein he admonished us to search the Scriptures and held before us the example of the Bereans who studied the Word daily and diligently.

Elder G. Feyter then talked about the problem: “Why are there so many different churches which still profess to believe in one Bible, the same sacraments, and the same Articles of Faith.” Following this, Yoga, Modern Evangelism, and Playing Cards were discussed in the form of conversations between six of our young people. Various questions were then given to all the groups and general discussion followed.

A slide presentation on Mission and Development of Third World Countries was given, and after answering of questions collected throughout the day, Elder Feyter spoke a few closing words. Due to the recent tragedy in the Chilliwack congregation, a solemn impression pervaded the conference. Greetings were extended on behalf of Mr. J. Beeke, President of the Chilliwack Youth Society. In respect for the deceased members and in sincere sympathy for the bereaved ones, a one minute silence was observed.

The barbeque scheduled for the evening was cancelled and everyone had supper in the hall before ending the meeting. May the Lord grant His blessing on that which was spoken and forgive all that was sinful, that it may be to His honor and our well-being. It was decided that our next conference, the Lord willing, would be held in Sunnyside, Washington on Saturday, August 5, 1978. We hope all the youth of Classis Far West will keep this date in mind and avoid planning other acitivities for that weekend and that many will be able to attend. May God spare us that we may see one another again at the set time.

NETHERLANDS REFORMED CONGREGATION AT CHILLIWACK

A few months ago, we were privileged to commemorate that for twenty-five years our congregation has existed as an instituted church.

The consistory had asked me to go through old papers, minutes, and so on, in order to write a booklet about the goodness of the Lord and about what He has done in our midst during those years.

It is a booklet of 24 pages and contains 9 pictures. It is available in Dutch, but also in English. Anyone interested can buy it for $5.00 per copy. The profit will go to our Timothy Christian School. Please specify whether you prefer the Dutch or the English edition.

You can send a cheque or money-order to elder H. Bisschop, 10405 N. McGrath Rd, Rosedale, B.C. Canada, VOX 1X0.
