THANKSGIVING DAY

2 minuten leestijd Arcering uitzetten

On Monday, October 10, the annual Thanksgiving Day was observed in Canada. In the United States it will be observed as usual on the fourth Thursday in November.

The Lord has given fruitfulness, although there was more in one place than in another. Some dairy farmers had great difficulties because of government regulations in regard to delivering the milk.

In general we were blessed with a good harvest, although there were places where much was destroyed by hail. Some areas had much rain, while others had such a serious drought that some farmers feared they would have no crops at all. At the end of the season the harvest was better than they had expected. If we look upon ourselves, at our sinfulness, at our departing from the ways of God, then it should be a wonder to us that it still is as it is. Righteously the Lord could have let all our cattle die, and could have rained fire and brimstone from heaven, as He did upon Sodom and Gomorrah, so that all would be destroyed. It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, and that we are not yet swept away with the besom of God’s righteousness. God’s mercy still reaches unto the clouds.

Oh, may we personally with our families, our nation and those in authority over us, bow down in the dust before the most high God, with that humility which is the fruit of the humiliation of Christ, and is a work of God the Holy Spirit. That humility is a true humility, and is well-pleasing to God.

May the Lord graciously bring us where we cannot bring ourselves. “I am not worthy that Thou shouldest enter under my roof.” “Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” “Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but unto Thy name give glory, for Thy mercy, and for Thy truth’s sake.”

And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. II Tim. 4:18
