O Timothy keep that which is committed to thy trust. II Timothy 6:20

THE CONFESSION OF FAITH ARTICLE XII

(continued)

Of The Creation

All things which the Lord created were made to his glory. This can be said of the irrational creatures, but above all of the rational creatures, such as men and angels. Of the angels our article tells us: “He also created the angels good, to be His messengers and to serve His elect.”

The first mention made of an angel in God’s Word is after the fall. The Lord had sent Adam and Eve forth from Paradise and placed angels at the entrance of the garden. The second time an angel is mentioned in the Bible is in the days of Abraham, which was about two thousand years later. But after this they are mentioned time and again, for example, with Jacob at Bethel, with Elisha, in the New Testament in relation to the coming and life of the Lord Jesus, and with Paul on the sea.

The creation of the angels is not as clearly explained as is the creation of men, but we read in Genesis 2:1, “Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.” The words “all the host of them” point to the thousands and thousands of angels which were created by the Lord in a moment. Further we read in Colossians 1:16 a, “For by Him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible.” The angels are spirits and therefore they are invisible.

Their creation probably took place on the first day of creation; before time began, nothing existed except the Lord Himself. In the book of Job we find the answer (Job 38:4), “Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth?” and in verse 7, “When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?” From this we conclude that the angels were created on the first day. Others think it was the fourth day or the sixth day, but our confession does not make a point of it.

The word ‘angel’ literally mans messenger, but they are also called gods, the host of God, morning stars, watchers, heroes, etc. They have no body, no flesh and blood, but are serving spirits with a will and mind, who have on occasion assumed a human body for a short time, which later returned to dust again. They are not omnipresent, but are bound to one place. Their labor is in the first place to serve the Lord and the Mediator, and then in the second place to serve the elect, of which there are a number of examples in God’s Word.

The number of angels must be very great, as the Lord Jesus spoke to Peter of twelve legions of them. They are all servants of the Lord, who with love do and fulfil the will and the pleasure of God. They are used to protect His church and children, but also oppositely bring the wrath of God upon His enemies. At Mahanaim Jacob saw an army of angels to protect him, while in Egypt all the firstborn were smitten by the angel of destruction. Also 185,000 Assyrians were killed in one night by an angel. At the end of the world they will gather the elect from the earth.

The teaching of Rome that each of God’s children has a special guardian angel cannot be proved from the Bible, although they believe they have a text for it. It is Matthew 18:10, “Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of My Father which is in heaven.” This text means that when we oppress God’s children, we touch the apple of His eye, that is, those for whom He especially cares. The Lord sends His angels to care for His children, as God’s Word shows us, but we also have examples outside of God’s Word.

Most frequently the angels have appeared at the turning points of mankind’s history, such as to the patriarchs, with the exodus out of Egypt, during the life of the Lord Jesus, and it shall also be so at the end of time. In former days there seem to have been more appearances than in our days. Many say that it is no longer necessary since the Lord Jesus appeared and fulfilled everything required to the salvation of His church. However, there are certain circumstances in the history of the church which clearly show that the Lord takes care of His church and in which angels were involved. We think of Rev. Smytegeld of Middelburg, Netherlands, who in moments of danger was protected by angels.

There is something else which we must speak of and that is the fall of certain angels. The Lord created all the angels good, but some rebelled against the Lord and fell from the excellency in which God had created them. Therefore there are now good angels and evil angels or devils. It cannot be true that the Lord created the devils, that is, made them with a beginning of evil in them. God is never the cause of sin and cannot be the author of sin, as He is the Holy One. What was the reason that the angels sinned, when they were in such a blessed state in direct communion with God? We cannot explain what took place as it is not mentioned in God’s Word. Some think it was pride, others speak of jealousy, but we don’t know. Sin is always a leaving of good.

When we think how that Eve came to sin against the Lord, how that she was deceived by Satan, who worked pride in her heart, then we can understand that many think this also has been the first sin in heaven. Neither is the day of sinning known; but it must have been after the seventh day because then the Lord saw that all things were good. Many believe that their fall took place shortly after the creation of man, the jewel of creation on the earth. Willingly these angels left the Lord, and for them there is no way to ever be saved.

The leader of the devils, that is, of the fallen angels, is called Satan or Beelzebub. The devils work against God in the unbelievers, but especially in the believers. Their purpose is always to hit God in His work, and that is what Satan did immediately after his fall in deceiving our first parents. He hoped that he had won the battle, but then the promise of the coming Christ was given. He did everything to hinder that birth throughout the ages; when the Mediator was born, he tried to hill Him, later he tried to deceive Him by temptations. At the end Christ was crucified, but this meant the destruction of Satan and his realm.

Satan hates the Lord, Who has become his judge, and fears and blasphemes Him. He blasphemes Christ Who has bruised his head; he blasphemes the Gospel, whose light he cannot endure; he blasphemes God’s people because they don’t follow him. He will not cease to persecute them, trying to bring them again under his authority. Because evil is also in them, and Satan knows the weak spots in their defence and life, he knows where to strike. He attacks them when God begins the good work in them, in days of darkness, and if he can, also on their deathbed. He tries to rule over government and pulpit, which have such a great influence on mankind, but the Lord remains faithful for His church. As experienced by God’s people, it remains a church militant upon this earth, but the Lord remains faithful for them to the very end.

Young people, Satan is a strong enemy also in our days, but I hope that the Lord may keep us from his deceit and lead us on the narrow path to life.

BIBLE QUIZ

Dear Boys and Girls,

This is our first quiz for the year 1978. A good portion of the first month has already passed by, and thus we see the shortness of time.

What do we need most in this year? Many would mention such things as health, food and clothing, protection from harm and accidents, etc. And these are important for our daily comfort. But what did Solomon request when the Lord said to him in a dream, “Ask what I shall give thee”? He asked for wisdom and he also received it. True wisdom is so necessary to live and die happily. But where do we obtain this? God’s Word tells us that the Scriptures are able to make us wise unto salvation, but merely reading the Bible is not enough. Something more is necessary. The first letters of our answers this month will spell out five words found in Proverbs 2 which tell us the source of true wisdom. (This month I had some help with the quiz from Laurie Bleeker.)

When Esther’s_______________and mother were dead, Mordecai took her for his own daughter.

Let us kneel before the Lord ____________Maker. (Psalms)

King Nebuchadnezzar found Daniel and his three friends ten times better in matters of wisdom than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his_____________.

After searching for Jesus for three days, Joseph and Mary found Him in the____________, sitting there in the midst of the doctors.

John the Baptist’s food was locust and wild___________.

At the burning bush, God said to Moses, “I have surely seen the affliction of My people which are in_______________”

Who was a seller of purple of the city of Thyatira?

What mount is a Sabbath day’s journey from Jerusalem?

Where was Samuel’s house?

To whom did Nathan say, “Thou art the man”?

In Proverbs we read, “A wise son maketh a___________father.”

When Leah bare Jacob the fifth son, what did she name him?

When Gideon had gathered the three hundred men, the host of Midian was beneath him in the

Who was Timothy’s mother?

David’s prayer was, “Shew me Thy ways, O Lord,____________ me Thy paths.”

Who was hung on the gallows which he had prepared for someone else?

Jesus’ first miracle was changing water into___________ .

The book of Proverbs says, “Hear ye children, the___________of a father, and attend to know understanding.”

We also read there, “The_______ will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.”

To whom did Barak say, “If thou wilt go with me to the battle, then will I go”?

Who took an hundred prophets and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water?

Who by faith chose rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season?

(Send your answers to Garret J. Moerday, 5211 Woodmont Drive, Kalamazoo, Michigan 49001.)

And now we shall answer the letters which we have received-

MARGARET MAASSEN - Your letter is the first one, Margaret. Last month I thought all my letter-writing friends had quit, but there are quite a few again this month. Your family is evenly divided between boys and girls.

GORDON DEN BOER - It was nice to hear from you, Gordon, and we are glad to have you join in answering the Bible quiz. I saw your picture, and also of your teachers, in the school year book.

What are you studying about in school?

KATHLEEN DEN HOED - Your letter points out how constant and continual our needs are, Kathleen. The rain of yesterday is soon dried up, and we need more; the health we have today is needed again tomorrow. And so it is in all things.

DEBRA LYNN WITVOET - We are quite well, Debra. I was sorry to hear that your puppy was killed. I am sure you know how and why death came into the world. For animals it is also true - the young can die, the old must die.

ANDY DEN BOER - How thick is the ice on the lake now, Andy? I suppose you were getting somewhat impatient while waiting for it to be strong enough for skating. It is a great blessing if we may be satisfied with what the Lord gives to us.

ELISABETH VERBEEK - We would also like to welcome you, Elisabeth, as you join in answering for the first time. The answers to the quiz are not sent back, as that would involve a lot of work. Your answers were written out very neatly. Do write again.

JOHN BOSCH - Have you heard how your exams turned out, John? How wonderfully the Lord has created us that we have a mind and a memory, but how inclined we are to remember the wrong things. Can you tell me what the Bible says we should remember? There are a number of answers.

ELLA KIEBOOM - It is snowing outside at the moment here in Kalamazoo, Ella. Now that the end of December is almost here as I write this, we can expect winter weather for a while. Say Hello to your family for us.

ALISA STAM - It seems there are quite a few new friends this month, Alisa, which we are happy to see. When we think how many boys and girls have no Bibles and are not taught about the Bible, we have many reasons to appreciate what we have.

JOYLYNNE MAST - How nice it is that you have your grandparents so near, Joy. Many boys and girls have to visit them only occasionally because they live in another state or across the ocean. And some grandparents are no longer living.

ANTON SLINGERLAND - I see that your birthday is on Christmas Day, Anton. Our congratulations to you, and we hope that you may have many more. How is that new baby brother? How far do you live from the church in Lethbridge?

WILLY NEELS - The questions won’t always be as easy, Willy, but I’m sure you don’t mind working a little harder to find the answers. Do you help your dad in the church? Young Samuel was also busy helping in the house of the Lord.

JOHN STAPEL - Every text in the Bible contains instruction for us, John, if we only have eyes to see and hearts to understand. The man born blind is a picture of us in respect to God’s Word and to God Himself.

HENDRIKA DE VOS - Do you have a hill nearby where you can go sliding, Hendrika? Did Rheta like the snow, or would she rather have California’s weather? The winter and the snow are also given by the Lord, so we should not complain about it. But we do it so quickly sometimes.

JANE SLINGERLAND - We are glad to hear from you, too, Jane. There are others with the same last name who answer the quiz. Are they your cousins? Since you are the oldest in the family, you can be a good helper for your mother. You wrote a very nice letter.

MARGARET DEN BOER - The sniffles are quite common this time of the year, Margaret, but usually aren’t too serious. Do you think you can stay away from home for a whole month without getting homesick? Maybe your father and mother would miss you the most.

MARY MALJAARS - How glad I am to see so many newcomers this month, Mary. Perhaps the mailman doesn’t like all the mail, but we do. Most important, of course, is that boys and girls are learning to know the Bible, which God has given us for a special purpose. Do you know what it is.?

LORETTA FAYE OLIVIER-Yes, Loretta, shovelling snow is not advisable for older people. When we are young, it is good exercise. But older ones, who have worked all their lives, don’t like to sit back and watch others work. Are you doing quite well on the piano?

CATHY NEELS - We too have had snow, Cathy, but at the moment is it raining, so it will soon disappear. In northern Michigan where my daughter lives they have had more than 70 inches of it already. And winter has just nicely started.

ANGELA STAM - I don’t believe that I have ever met your teachers, Angela, although I did see Mr. Van Dam’s picture in your last year book. What are you studying about in science class? I always liked math best, but science is quite interesting.

MARTIN SCHOUTEN - How are you and your family getting along, Martin? We hope that everything is going quite well. How many sheep did they have on the farm which you went to? We do not see many sheep in Michigan. We do read about shepherds in the Bible. Can you name some of them?

MRS. VERHOEF’S CLASS IN CHILLIWACK - How surprised I was to receive a large envelope with 30 replies to the Bible quiz and 30 letters, plus a letter from your teacher. As you can understand, putting 30 more letters in the Timothy section would leave little space for any thing else. However, I did want you to know how glad we were to receive your replies and letters, so thought a joint letter would serve that purpose. Mrs. Verhoef wrote that it was not only being used for Bible instruction, but also for handwriting practice and sentence structure. We know that Bible instruction is the most important, but we hope you continue to work diligently on all your studies. Moses, Daniel, his three friends, and the apostle Paul were all students in their youth, and we see how the Lord used them and their learning to His honor and to the benefit of the church. We wish all of you such success in your studies.

And to all my young friends, our wishes are the same. We have begun a new year, but we pray that the Lord might also give a new heart, new desires, a new will, for these we need for the well-being of our souls. May the Lord remember each of us in this respect.

With love,

Your friend, “Uncle Garret”

GOOD ADVICE

Two travelers were passing along a road, and saw a pair of shoes and a worn coat lying along the side. Said the professor to his student companion, “Some poor man has left his shoes and coat here while he finishes his day’s work.”

“Let us play him a trick,” eagerly suggested the student. “Let us hide the shoes, and then conceal ourselves behind these bushes. Then we will see what a state the man will be in.”

“My young friend,” answered the professor, “we must never amuse ourselves at the expense of the poor. You are rich, and may give yourself a greater pleasure than by hiding the shoes of the poor man. Put a silver dollar in each shoe, and then we will hide ourselves as you suggested.” And so he did.

Slowly and wearily came a man across the field, he who had left his coat and shoes at the side of the way. When he reached the spot, he slipped one foot into a shoe, but feeling something hard, he stooped down to remove it. A silver dollar! Had it dropped from the skies? He looked up at the clouds, and then down the road. The professor and his pupil, unseen, were watching the man. He put the dollar into his pocket, and proceeded to slip his foot into the other shoe, but there was something hard in that one, too. What? Another dollar? Then the poor man fell on his knees and thanked God for having heard his prayer for help. He spoke of a wife sick at home and helpless, and of hungry children, and asked God’s blessing on the unknown hand that placed two dollars in his shoes. Then he rose from his knees, put on his shoes and coat, and walked away as though he was rested.

When he was out of sight, the professor and the student came out into the road. “Are you not better pleased than if you had played your intended trick?” asked the professor.

“Indeed I am,” replied the student. “I feel the truth of some words which I have never really understood before: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

Christ influenced these two men that day as a wise Counselor, although they saw Him not.

EVERY EYE SHALL SEE HIM

Can it be true that every eye
Shall see the Savior when they die,
And see Him face to face?
Yes, every eye shall see the King,
But some will weep, while others sing;
Oh, which will be our case?

Do we delight to see Him now,
I mean by faith, and love to bow
Before His sacred throne?
Or do we hate His precious Name,
And think ‘tis folly, quite a shame,
His cause and truth to own?

A sinner that’s beloved of God,
Redeemed from hell by precious blood,
Debts freely paid by grace,
Shall see the King, rejoice the while,
And falling at His feet will smile
To see his lovely face.

But sinners who are dead in sin,
Defiled without, defiled within,
And die in this sad state,
Shall see the King in wrath, and fear,
And they will tremble when they hear
Their just but awful fate.

If every eye shall see the King,
It cannot be a trifling thing,
But quite a solemn thought,
The very eye that reads this page
Must see Him soon, in love or rage,
And to His face be brought.

Lord, give Thy Spirit to us all,
That we may humbly on Thee call,
Our guilty souls to save.
For now’s the time to seek the Lord,
“There’s no repentance,” says the Word,
“Beyond or in the grave.”

HIS GIFTS TO ME

Not more than others I deserve,
Yet God has given me more;
For I have food, while others starve,
And beg from door to door.
While some poor children scarce can tell
Where they may lay their head;
I have a home wherein to dwell,
And rest upon my bed.
I was not born, as thousands are,
Where God was never known;
And taught to pray a useless prayer
To blocks of wood and stone.
O God, I thank thee, who has plann’d
A better lot for me,
What shall I render to the
Lord, For all His gifts to me?
