O Timothy keep that which is committed to thy trust II Timothy 6:20

THE CONFESSION OF FAITH

ARTICLE XIII

(continued)

Of Divine Providence

In writing about Divine providence in our last article, we made a division of it into three parts preservation, cooperation, and government, and discussed the first of these. Now we will say something about the second part.

COOPERATION is the almighty power of God, whereby He influences all the motions and operations of His creatures. Thus there is written in I Corinthians 12:6, “but it is the same God which worketh all in all.” By His preservation we continue in our existence, but in order to live and to move we cannot be without God’s cooperation. As an example, the Lord must give us the strength to raise our arm; if the Lord does not help, does not cooperate, then we are not able to do so. If we are healthy, then we cannot believe this and will say, “I can do it myself.” No, this is not true. Go to the hospitals and you will see many people who are paralyzed; it may have been caused by disease or an accident, but it is also in God’s providence.

Likewise when seed is sown in the springtime - if the Lord does not bless the labor, then there will not be a harvest. How evident it is that we are dependent upon the Lord. He must give the strength and ability for us to do our work, although we remain responsible as to how we spend our time and strength. We must give an account of all our deeds, and the Lord knows exactly what we do and how we do it.

Cooperation is not that the Lord does something and man must do the rest. No, God is the first and supreme power of all things. Man is dependent upon the help of the Lord in all things. When the Lord commands us to convert ourselves, then it is impossible for us to do so. But the Lord has also said that the house of Jacob should ask Him for this. Thus this commandment of the Lord must become our prayer; and the Lord has promised, “I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh.” In all things, but especially in our conversion, we need the cooperation of the Lord. He must be the first and the last; nevertheless, we have to do what the Lord requires of us. We may not neglect the use of the means of grace. As we use them, it must be with a prayer in our heart that the Lord will apply them to our heart. Has it ever become your prayer as you went to church or read His Word?

The third part of providence is GOVERNMENT, which is the almighty power whereby He directs everything to a certain determinate end. In Psalm 93 we read, “The Lord reigns.” He reigns over the heaven and the earth. As the sovereign owner He may do this and can do this; the whole creation is subjected to Him. This government of God is not arbitrary, but is according to His divine intention. We know that every government makes plans for the future, although so often they must change their plans. The Lord made His plans from eternity, and also fulfills them. He is never surprised by anything. The helm of this world is in His hand, and He never makes a miscalculation. All He does is always good. This does not mean that it is always according to our desire, or even according to the will of God’s people, but at the end of this world all people shall acknowledge that the Lord did not make an error.

Providence extends over all things: (1) over the lifeless or inanimate creation, such as wind and water; (2) over the irrational creation, as we can see when in Egypt the Lord said, “Against any of the children of Israel shall not a dog move his tongue” (Consider also Elijah and the ravens, Jonah and the great fish, and Daniel in the lions’ den); and (3) over the rational creatures, the human race. Thus in the birth of each person - our parents, but also the time and place are decreed by the Lord; likewise our abode upon earth, with adversity and prosperity. Joseph was in prison, but became the second in Egypt. Also the time and the way of our death is known to the Lord.

Certain events in God’s Word make it so clear that wonderful ways are used to fulfill God’s providence. Think of Jacob, who gave Joseph a coat of many colors. It worked envy in the hearts of his brothers so that he was sold into Egypt as a slave, but there he must also save Israel. There Israel became a great and mighty nation, which later received Canaan as an inheritance. Moses was laid in the river Nile, but was found by the daughter of Pharaoh and thus came to the palace. There he received the education which was necessary in order to become the leader of Israel. Think of Ahasuerus, who on a certain night could not sleep; his servants read to him in the history books, where the name of Mordecai was mentioned. It was the beginning of the downfall of Haman and the exaltation of Mordecai, but was also in order that Israel could be saved.

We must also mention Caesar Augustus, who decreed that the whole world should be taxed, and this was necessary so that the prophecy of Bethlehem could be fulfilled. God’s providence is there clearly displayed! In more recent history there was a man who cut a letter in wood which fell to the ground, and this became the beginning of the invention of printing. There is no end to all the examples which can be given, and all these things make it clear that the Lord in His providence rules over everything, both small and great.

In the Heidelberg Catechism providence is especially ascribed to God the Father; in the doctrine of providence we see that the Father is able to help His children. What a blessing it would be for the church if they gave more attention to and believed more of the providence of God. So often we hear it said, “My way is hidden from the Lord and my judgment is passed over from my God.” Then faith is not in exercise, and we try to help ourselves. By doing this we go to other gods and expect it from them. But the Lord has advised, Cast all your cares upon Me; for I care for you. As the Almighty God He is able to do so, and as a faithful Father He will do so. If we may believe this, then there is comfort and strength to be found in the doctrine of providence for God’s church.

I believe that the many insurances of our time tend to make the Lord superfluous. With all forms of insurance coverages, from cradle to grave, we make it impossible for the Lord to perform miracles. What can the Lord do then? There is no room left for Him. Yet I know examples of how God’s children, without insurance, may live from His hand and were richly blessed. He has the power to give what they need.

The Lord governs over all things, also over sin. Brakel says that if sin is outside of God’s providence, then the human race would not be under God’s government, for all their deeds are sinful. We know that the Lord tolerates sin to a certain extent, and that it is not outside of His providence, but God can never be the author of sin. We take the example of Joseph who was sold into Egypt; it was a sinful deed of his brothers, but at the same time the Lord used it to save Israel. No, God does not work sin; as a Holy God He cannot be the origin of sin, but hates and punishes it.

Many do not believe in the providence of God, but I would advise them to read the newspapers and compare them with God’s Word. Then you will see how that the Lord rules the world and executes His plan. When we believe in God’s providence, we can be patient in adversity. Job could say, “The Lord gave, the Lord has taken away; blessed be the Name of the Lord.” Then we will also be thankful in prosperity. We have merited nothing, but have sinned time and again, and yet the Lord has given so many benefits. And for the future? The Lord is faithful and all instruments against us will not succeed.

This article concludes with the words, “And therefore we reject that damnable error of the Epicureans, who say that God regards nothing, but leaves all things to chance.” Epicurus was a Greek philosopher who lived about 300 B.C. He taught that God did not interfere with man at all. What a blessing that this learned man was wrong, and that the Lord still cares for this world!

BIBLE QUIZ

Dear Boys and Girls,

When a person has lost blood for one reason or another, such as in an accident or due to an operation, additional blood from another person is often given him. Then we see how important blood is for a person’s body in order to be strong and healthy.

But there is other blood which is of far greater value, and which is pointed to and spoken of in God’s Word. It is so important for the life of a soul, yes, of many souls. Perhaps you have already guessed of what we are speaking. The blood of the Old Testament sacrifices pointed to this blood; the water of baptism and the wine of the Lord’s Supper also point to this blood. It is a blood of such tremendous value that it is precious also in the sight of God. It cleanses from sin and unrighteousness. God’s people receive the blessing and benefit of it, and how important it is that we also learn to value it highly. If you have not already decided what it is we are speaking of, the first letters of our answers will tell you. Here are the questions --

In instituting the passover in Egypt, the Lord said, “The blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses; when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to_________ you.”

After beholding the sepulchre, and how His body was laid, the women returned, and prepared spices and_____________

And now to answer the letters which we have again received —

GORDON DEN BOER - Your letter will be the first, Gordon. We received quite a number of letters about the burning of the school building. It can be clearly seen in these letters how much the school meant to the boys and girls who attended there.

DEBRA LYNN WITVOET - After all the snow we had, I think most people are looking forward to spring, Debra. As you mentioned, the snow is really pretty, but in it the Lord has again shown His mighty power. So much snow covering a large area, and everything is brought to a standstill.

GLENDA SLINGERLAND Have you had the flu, Glenda? At this time of the year it does seem to be a problem in some areas. We sometimes think we are quite healthy, but that can change in just a few hours. Our catechism teaches us that neither sickness or health come by chance.

LANE GROEN - Your answers arrived at the right place this time, Lane. It looks as if you have a full schedule in school. What grade level are you in at school? Here it is elementary through the sixth grade, junior high through the ninth, and senior high school through the twelfth.

WILLY NEELS - It was certainly wonderful that places could be found so quickly where your classes could be held, Willy. Also those things are in the hand of the Lord, and He can provide in all our needs. It must seem strange to attend school in these other buildings, when you were accustomed to such a beautiful building.

ANN-MARLENE VANDER MEULEN - No, we were not without electricity during the snow storms, Ann-Marlene. We depend upon electricity in so many ways. Did you miss some school because of the weather? There were two days I was not able to go to work.

MARTIN SCHOUTEN - I was glad to see that in listing the names of shepherds, you also included the Lord Jesus, Who is the Good Shepherd of His people. There is no other shepherd to be compared with Him in caring for His sheep and in what He has done for His sheep. In what were they dipping the sheep at the sheep station?

FLORENCE WESTERINGH - We were glad to have you join in answering the Bible quizzes, Florence. It is so important to know our Bibles well, but so much more important to know the God of the Bible as our God. We hope we may continue to hear from you.

JOHN GROEN - Since you were able to give me the subject and the points of the sermon in church, you must have listened real well, John. We are glad to see that. As the Lord Jesus is pointed out to us in His Word, may we learn to cry out as blind Bartimaeus did. I’m sure you know that story.

HENDRIKA DE VOS - Did you also get the flu, Hendrika? We hope that everyone in your family is feeling better again. When Adam and Eve were in Paradise there were no sicknesses, but this too was brought into the world through sin.

JOHN STAPEL - We are all quite well, John, and hope the same of you and your family. Our snow is still piled high, and doesn’t seem to be melting very rapidly. Is your arm completely healed now? Give our greetings to your family.

JENNIFER VERBEEK - We can imagine that it was a shock to learn that your school had burned down during the night, Jennifer. In which of the three buildings do you go to school? Were they able to get enough books for all the boys and girls?

TIM KAAT - We sent a quantity of stamps off last month again, Tim. They do appreciate receiving them. How are you doing in school? Half of the school year is already past, so you’ve had some marks to show how you are doing. Say Hello to your parents and Amy.

JIM KRAAYEVELD - It is nice that you can help your father when you have some spare time, Jim. When will the new house be finished? There is quite a lot of work involved in building a house, isn’t there? And the foundation is very important, even though it can’t be seen later.

MARGARET DEN BOER - It must be your cat didn’t like his bath, Margaret. Do you have just the one cat? Did you have driver training at school? It is a new responsibility to drive a car, since if not used properly, a car can be a dangerous thing.

JOHN BOSCH-Have you had any rain recently, John? How important it is for us to realize that the Lord is the giver of rain in its season. We have examples in the Bible where rain was given upon prayer for it. Do you know of these examples?

ELISABETH VERBEEK - The Bible also speaks to us about things which were destroyed by fire, and other times about things which fire did not destroy. Can you give me examples of them, Elisabeth? Fire is often spoken of in God’s Word.

CATHY NEELS - Where do we find fire mentioned for the first time in the Bible, Cathy? We will be looking for your answer when you write next time, D.V. Perhaps you are studying a little harder now to make it easier for your teachers.

WILLIAM VERBEEK - Have they started working on the new school yet, William? I think many of the boys and girls would be willing to help with the work if there were things they could do. We hope we may soon hear about the progress being made.

ARLENE REMUS - In Job 37 we have a text about the snow, Arlene. Can you find it? It tells us very clearly that the Lord is the sender of both the snow and the rain, but then also of the sunshine. Are you getting along quite well in school?

KEVIN VERBEKE - Thanks for the picture which you sent, Kevin. We are glad to see the snow piles starting to melt when the sun shines brightly. I am sure you were thinking of us when you saw the picture in the paper of the snow in Kalamazoo.

ANGELA STAM - Your letter is last this time, Angela. Is Camp River School the one part way up the mountain? You now really have three Timothy Christian Schools all in the same area. I’ve heard of some nice collections in the churches for the school, which shows that others are also thinking of you.

Many thanks, boys and girls, for your replies to the quiz. May the Lord bless His Word to our hearts as we study it in our homes, schools, and catechism classes. We hope to hear from all of you again next month, D.V. With love,

Your friend,

“Uncle Garret”

THE PERSECUTED CHURCH AMONG THE MOUNTAINS OF SCOTLAND

Alexander Gordon of Earlston was among those who had pledged themselves to continue faithful to their heavenly Lord and to His kingdom in their native land. For this reason he was much sought after by the soldiers of the king who were engaged in making prisoners of as many of them as they could. They had a watchful eye on Gordon as a leading and influential person in that part of the country. The house of Earlston, when it did not happen to be occupied by a garrison of soldiers, was frequently subjected to a sudden and unsparing search.

On one of these occasions, when the soldiers were on the way to the castle, a man from a nearby village hastened by the nearest path through the woods to warn him of his danger. On receiving this notice, Alexander quickly dressed himself in the clothes of a working man, and was busily employed in chopping wood in the court of the castle when the soldiers appeared. Part of their company was stationed at the gate and the others entered the house.

The commander asked the woodchopper if Earlston was within the house, and received the reply that he was not. The officer commanded Gordon to put down his axe and assist him in his search. He complied with an air of indifference as if it were the same thing to him whether he was employed in splitting wood or in searching for fugitives. He conducted him through every room and seemed to enter as heartily into the matter as the soldiers themselves. No one for a moment suspected the guide, and when they found their search to be in vain, they questioned him respecting his master’s hiding place in the woods. On this point, however, they found no satisfaction, for Gordon, not being the person they took him to be, referred in his answer to another master than him whom they sought. His Master, he said, had no hiding place that he knew of, and he was certain if He understood that any person whatever was seeking Him, He would show Himself in a very brief space.

The man, however, did not understand this, and thinking the supposed servant to be very open, they left the place, disappointed in not having accomplished their objective. Earlston’s time was not yet come, and he was shielded for the present, even though the eyes of his foes were upon him, and who, if they had been at little pains, might easily have seen through his disguise.

A MINISTER’S PURPOSE

Rev. Duncan MacBeath had been called to a station in Lewis, on an island of Scotland. When on his way to this place, a man accosted him with the usual question as to ‘what might the stranger be doing in the island?’ for it was not often that strangers appeared there. “I am come,” he said, “to enlist all who will in the King’s army.” “I suppose,” said the enquirer, “it is the young men you will be after?” “Yes,” was the reply, “and the young women too.” This reply no doubt left the questioner wondering if the stranger was not obsessed with rather strange fancies.

In answer to a similar question from another, he told him that he had come “to plant trees”. Possibly both parties understood later the hidden meaning of the gracious traveller’s parable. That he did enlist many in the Lord’s army is true; and under his ministry there the myrtle tree and the fir tree grew where the briar and the thorn had cumbered the ground.

A WORD TO NEWLYWEDS

Rev. John Kennedy often spoke the following to young people coming under the responsibilities of marriage: “Let God be worshipped in your home; for the home which is without a family altar is like a house without a roof—exposed to every storm, and unsheltered from every danger.”
