A PERIODICAL FOR YOUNG AND OLD
O Timothy keep that which is committed to thy trust. II Timothy 6:20
THE CONFESSION OF FAITH ARTICLE XIV
Of the Creation and Fall of Man, and His Incapacity to Perform What is Truly Good.
This article brings us into anthropology, which is the teaching about the origin, nature and destiny of man, especially from the perspective of his relationship to God. This subject is spoken of in articles 14 through 17, starting first with the creation and fall, then with original sin, next with eternal election, and lastly with the recovery of fallen man.
We begin with creation, which is only known from God’s Word. It is well-known that many people reject this doctrine, and believe instead in the so-called ‘evolution theory’. In this theory the various types of animals and plants have their origin in other pre-existing types, and the distinguishable differences are due to modifications in succesive generations. Simply expressed - man would descend from the animals. This cannot be proved, but is a speculation and theory of Darwin, who thought that the lower forms of life increased until they came to man. However, such a change-over from one kind to another has never been observed. No examples can be given as proof that man descends from the animals.
For many years they proclaimed with great certainty that they had found the skull of an ape-man, but later it was proved to be the knee-cap of an elephant. The well-known Piltdown skull was the greatest discovery in support of the evolution theory, but it was intentionally imitated. The skull was made of a certain lime or plaster, with the addition of a few centimeters of a chimpanzee’s jaw. The teeth were filed down to match the length of human teeth and then prepared with potassium to make them old. Thus they manufactured the skull of an ape-man who was to have lived 500,000 years ago, but in reality was less than 500 years. I will not give more examples as I think you have heard of them, and if you desire to spend the time, you can find them given in a number of books.
Especially in your geography class you will hear various explanations, but remember, young people, that God’s Word has never failed in the past. The evolution theory is only a theory and, we repeat, has no proof at all! It not only contradicts God’s Word regarding the origin of man, but also in respect to man’s unity and place of habitation.
The unity of the human race is clearly proved in God’s Word from Acts 17:26, “And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth.” Some think that people lived before Adam, based upon Genesis 6:2, where the sons of God took of the daughters of men. Who were the sons of God? The explanation is simple enough when we understand that the sons of God were the sons of Seth who were still keeping the institutions of God. The daughters of men were the children of Cain. By this mixture world conformity became greater, and the service of the Lord was more and more forgotten.
I know that this does not apply to our subject of creation, but today we have the same great danger. The service of the Lord must occupy the first place, also in our married life. When we must add water to the wine of our religion, or make a compromise for our marriage in order to please the other party at the cost of the Lord, then we are in the wrong. Then we love our boyfriend or girlfriend, our husband or our wife, more than the Lord. In this we can never expect the blessing of the Lord in our life. There has already been so much grief in the lives of young people regarding this, but it still seems impossible to convince many of our young people. I can give you many examples of those who regretted this when it was too late; many such marriages end in divorce, and others have a difficult life, sighing daily under the enmity of their partner. Then you often hear it said, “I wish I had listened to my parents.” This is sufficient for the moment, but I hope you will take it to heart!
We have seen that Adam and Eve were the first people who inhabited the earth, and this was about six-thousand years ago. Those who disagree have several arguments against it. They speak of the great differences in skull structure, hair, color, language, morals, customs, etc. I cannot explain everything scientifically, but we do know that the Lord made a difference in the families of Shem, Ham and Japheth, the sons of Noah. White people are the descendents of Japheth, the children of Shem are the Israelites and the Ishmaelites or Arabs, who are slightly tinted, and the colored are the descendents of Ham. These are the main divisions.
However, when we see the great differences in one family, then you can understand that throughout the centuries these external changes have taken place, and we may not forget also the influence of the climate. Often that which is small in one part of the world can be quite large elsewhere. I think of a simple example in plant life - the poincetta in Europe is not more than one foot in height, while in California it becomes a tree. This is the influence of the climate.
The differences in language is not difficult to explain, because we find our answer in Genesis 11, which speaks about the confusion of tongues at Babel. Therefore, although there are many differences in the human race, we can still defend the unity of it as all descending from Adam and Eve. Even the blood groups found among the human race form a unity.
We cannot determine where Paradise was located, although in the days of Moses it was a place or country well-known. Most theologians think it was in Mesopotamia or in Babylon.
Against all the unbelief of the world we have the unmovable Word of God, which tells us that the Lord is the Creator of heaven and earth, and also of man. Thus it was stated in this 14th article: “We believe that God created man out of the dust of the earth, and made and formed him after His own image and likeness; good righteous and holy, capable in all things to will, agreeably to the will of God.”
We hope to say something more of this the next time, the Lord willing.

BIBLE QUIZ
Dear Boys and Girls,
This month I was helped by Danny Sweetman of New Jersey in making the quiz. The first letters spell out six words of prayer found in Psalm 56. The questions themselves are all in regard to plants and animals of the Bible. Thanks, Danny, for your help.
Especially at this time of the year when we see the trees budding and the flowers blooming again, we are brought to think about the wonders of the Lord in nature. How marvellous that huge trees can grow from such small beginnings, that birds and animals bring forth and care for their little ones, and that flowers, plants and grass make their appearance at this time of the year. They are all the handiwork of God. In Psalter 171 we sing of it, and it says, “All nature joins in singing a joyful song of praise.” May we too learn to admire these things and praise the Lord for these blessings. Here is the quiz -
In instructing Moses regarding the passover, the Lord said, “With____________herbs they shall eat it.”
Who was brought bread and flesh both morning and evening by ravens?
Psalm 45 says, “All thy garments smell of__________, and aloes, and cassia.”

With the plague of hail in the land of Egypt, we read that “the wheat and the__________were not smitten, for they were not grown up.”
Job, before his affliction, had three thousand of what animal?
The Philistines in returning the ark to Israel were to make ______of the emerods and of the mice to send back with it.
All the days of Solomon, Judah and Israel dwelt safely, every man under his vine and under his___________tree.
Balaam said of the children of Israel, “God brought him forth out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an___________”
By the word of the Lord Jeremiah said, “Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the________ his spots?”
In telling of his dream, the baker said, “In the__________basket there was of all manner of bakemeats for Pharaoh, and the birds did eat them.”
At the sea of Tiberius, after the Lord Jesus arose, Peter drew the_________to land full of great fishes, an hundred and fifty and three.
In a parable told by the Lord Jesus, “while men slept, his enemy came and sowed_______ among the wheat.”
When Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died, she was buried beneath Bethel under an_________tree.
In battle against the Philistines, David was told, “When thou hearest the sound of a going in the tops of the__________trees, that then thou shalt bestir thyself.”
When Nebuchadnezzar was driven from men, his hairs were grown like_____________feathers, and his nails like birds’ claws.
The second time Noah sent out the dove, she came back with an__________leaf in her mouth.
Rebekah said to Jacob, “Go now to the flock, and fetch me from thence two good kids of the ________.”
In the book of John we read that the Lord Jesus found in the temple those that sold________ and sheep and doves.
Moses, telling Pharaoh about the death of the firstborn, said, “Against any of the children of Israel shall not a___________move his tongue.”

And now we shall answer the letters which we have received -
VIRGINIA VANDER WAAL - It was nice to hear from you again, Virginia. I suppose your horse has had her foal by this time. Did you like the book which you received? You should be able to learn much about the Bible if you study it.
HENDRIKA DE VOS - You wrote a nice letter, Hendrika, but you didn’t give your address or the name of the book you wanted to have. Perhaps you can send this with the answers this time. Have you ever been in Alaska? To us that seems far away, but I guess it isn’t so far from where you live.
GLENDA SLINGERLAND - Sunday will be Easter, and we still have snow on the ground in some places, Glenda. Are you planning any long trips this summer? Or maybe that trip of last summer was enough for several years. Give our greetings to your parents.
NANCY DE JONG - Yes, we remember your father and mother visiting Kalamazoo, Nancy. Maybe you can also make that trip sometime. There is one trip that every person is making, starting when he or she is born, and that is the trip to eternity. We should all think much and often about it.
ANDREW KIEBOOM - Are you getting used to wearing glasses, Andrew? Do you wear them all the time? Our eyesight is so important, and we can see this especially when we look at those who, for one reason or another, cannot see. These problems of the eyes are mentioned quite often in the Bible.
CATHY NEELS - My arm is completely healed, Cathy, but I am reminded of it now and then when I am climbing a ladder. What a blessing that the broken arms and legs do not remain broken, but that the Lord has given an ability for them to heal. We often forget that.
KATHLEEN DEN HOED - It is difficult to be satisfied with all kinds of weather, Kathleen, but then we must consider that the Lord is also the giver of such things. Today man would like to be able to control the weather, but how much better if we might bring our needs unto Him in humble prayer.
ELISABETH VERBEEK - We are glad to see the list of names grow, Elisabeth, as the Bible is such an important book for every boy and girl. And although we can learn to know much about God’s Word, we find there is no end to it. A writer of the psalter said it so well - “Unfathomed depth, unmeasured height.”
TOMMY VAN WINGERDEN - We are glad to have you join in answering the Bible quiz, Tommy. Yes, we understand that the Youth Conference will be held in New Jersey this summer, D.V. I’m sure there will also be a Bible quiz, so you will have to study hard for it.
NADINE LUTEYN - You are also welcomed to the Bible quiz, Nadine. I often use the concordance in making up the quizzes, and it is a big help. The important thing, of course, is that we might learn something in doing it, and this is for you, but also for me.
JEANETTE SLINGERLAND - Your letter and answers were neatly written, Jeanette. How is your grandmother now? We hope that she is feeling much better again. Last night we had freezing rain, so it looks rather icy outside this morning. But there are indications of spring, similar to those mentioned in the Song of Solomon.
JOHN BOSCH - Mistakes do creep in sometimes, John, even though we try hard to eliminate them. But we see that boys and girls are alert when they find the answer even though there is an error. This time, at least, the answer wasn’t far away.
YVONNE HERFST - Did others in your family also have the flu, Yvonne? Often it doesn’t last so long, but sometimes it is quite a while before a person feels real well again. Have they found teachers for your school which they are planning? Perhaps some day you could be a teacher.
ELLA KIEBOOM - Did you have a good trip to Iowa, Ella? You have travelled that road quite often. Do you stay on a farm when you are there? I shouldn’t think just of farms when we speak of Iowa, but I do know there are lots of farms there, and I find farms quite interesting.
LANE GROEN - When you answer this month’s quiz (April), your name does not get listed until the June issue, Lane. This is because of the time needed to get the Banner of Truth printed. When you answer regularly, you don’t realize the difference, as your name appears every month.
ANITA SCHOUTEN - Does it then continue with Form 4, 5, and 6, Anita? And what are the grades below Form 1? We hear about them, but don’t quite understand them. Do you usually have a lot of rain during your winter months?
JOHN STAPEL - We have not seen your sister lately, John, but we don’t get to Grand Rapids very often. There is never enough time to do all the things we would like to do. How are you doing in school? Summer vacation isn’t so far away anymore.
TROY VAN BEEK - Welcome to the Bible quiz, Troy. I don’t suppose you have much snow where you live. Have you always lived in Texas? We don’t get any other answers from there as far as I know. We could read your answers very well.
MARIE REMUS - It was nice to hear from you again, Marie. Your answers were all correct. Did you think the quiz was quite easy this month? We don’t want to frighten any away with too difficult questions, but neither do we want to make them too simple.
BOBBY MALJAARS - We hope your birthday was a happy one, Bobby, and that you may have many more of them. I suppose if I asked what makes a birthday a happy one, I would receive many different answers. What do you think would be the best answer?
JOLEEN DEN HOED - Do you plant mint roots outside or inside at this time of the year, Joleen? I think most people are glad to see the nice spring weather arrive, especially after a severe winter. Have you read your book already?
MARGARET MAASSEN - Is everyone feeling better again at your house, Margaret? The latter part of the winter there is usually quite a bit of sickness, or so it seems. How far are you from Corsica? Or are you closer to our church in Iowa?
JANET VAN ZWEDEN - It was good to hear from you again, Janet. How are your grandparents in Lethbridge? They, too, are getting quite old. Give our greetings to your parents and your grandparents, and, of course, the rest of your family.
DARRYL SLINGERLAND - We are glad to have you join in answering the Bible quizzes, Darryl. In the Bible we read of Timothy, who knew the scriptures from his early days. The Lord blessed Timothy, and we pray that the Lord will also bless our boys and girls in this way today.
RICHARD VAN SWEDEN - Have you been studying the questions in the “Know Your Bible” book, Richard? I am sure you can keep busy a long time with all those questions. Don’t worry about sending in your answers too late, since it only means your name will appear a month later.
CAMPBELL GOUDZWAARD - How are you doing in school, Campbell? When do you receive report cards again? Which of your studies do you like the best? Perhaps you like them all, but usually there is one which seems more interesting.
JENNIFER VERBEEK - Do you have Bible lessons every day in school, Jennifer? There is so much to study in it. The psalmist said, “It is my meditation all the day.” Do you live quite far from the school which you are now using? I imagine the busses are busy each day.
WILLIAM VERBEEK - I notice that I am finally reaching the bottom of the pile of letters, William. We are glad to see so many boys and girls sending in their answers. What did you do during spring vacation? We saw your principal here in Kalamazoo.
MRS. VERHOEF’S CLASS IN CHILLIWACK - There are in front of me two sets of letters and answers from your class, so that’s quite a few. They were received within a few days of each other, so one must have been delayed and the other hurried along. Again we will not try to answer the letters individually, but will give you another joint answer. I hear you have another teacher. It is now Mrs. Luteyn’s class instead of Mrs. Verhoef’s. We hope you will study just as hard and learn just as much as you did before. It is a great privilege to be able to attend a Christian school of our own church, but it is also a great responsibility. We learn to know the Word of God quite well, but the Lord speaks of those who speak of and honor Him with their lips, but their hearts are far from Him. Much prayer is necessary, asking the Lord to bring this historical knowledge into our hearts, so that it might be a blessing to our souls. You as boys and girls need this, but we as teachers and grown-ups need it too. We pray that the Lord will remember us together, and also Mrs. Verhoef in her new responsibilities.
Many thanks to all the boys and girls. May the Lord add His blessing. We hope to hear fom all of you again next month, D.V.
With love, “Uncle Garret”
A VIEW OF HIM
Israel in ancient days
Not only had a view
Of Sinai in a blaze,
But learned the Gospel too;
The types and figures were a glass
In which they saw the Savior’s face.
The paschal sacrifice
And blood besprinkled door
Seen with enlightened eyes
And once applied with power
Would teach the need of other blood
To reconcile an angry God.
The lamb, the dove, set forth
His perfect innocence,
Whose blood of matchless worth
Should be the soul’s defence;
For he who can for sin atone
Must have no failings of his own.
The scape-goat on his head
The people’s trespass bore,
And to the desert led
Was to be seen no more;
In Him our Surety seemed to say,
“Behold, I bear your sins away.”
Dipped in his fellow’s blood,
The living bird went free;
The type, well understood,
Expressed the sinner’s plea;
Described a guilty soul enlarged
And by a Savior’s death discharged.
Jesus, I love to trace
Throughout the sacred page,
The footsteps of Thy grace,
The same in every age!
O grant that I may faithful be
To clearer light vouchsafed to be!
THE HABIT OF PRAYER
During the American Civil War, a soldier was once brought before his commanding officer for being, as his accusers thought, in communication with the enemy under cover of night. The soldier had come some years before from Scotland, where his parents had taught him the need for prayer, but where he had also learned by experience that the Lord hears and answers the cry of the needy. At the interview with his superiors, the man explained that he was only praying to God, and not conversing with men.
The commander - a shrewd man and familiar with his Bible -after he had carefully examined him, said, “Let us hear you pray now, for never had you more need of prayer.” The pious Highlander, there and then, fell on his knees and addressed his Maker in reverent and Scriptural language. His prayer revealed that not only was he familiar with the Word of God, but was, as a true believer, deeply exercised in his spirit. When he had finished, the officer said, “You may go. No one could have prayed so, without long apprenticeship. Those who have never attended drill, fare but ill at a review.”

ALL OF GRACE
Prepare me, gracious God,
To stand before Thy face;
Thy Spirit must the work perform,
For it is all of grace.
