O Timothy keep that which is committed to thy trust. II Timothy 6:20

THE CONFESSION OF FAITH

ARTICLE XIV

(continued)

Of the Creation and Fall of man, and his Incapacity to perform what is truly good.

That which we quoted from this article of our confession in the previous issue is also stated in the catechism and in the five articles against the Remonstants. God is the Creator of heaven and earth, but also of mankind. The Lord did not need man for His glory, as He is All-sufficient in Himself, but it was His pleasure and sovereign will to make man. And it is remarkable to see the difference between the creation in general and the creation of man.

In creating all the other things, the Lord only commanded and it came into existance. With the creation of man it was different, for we read, “And God said, Let us make man in our image, and after our likeness.” When the Lord had finished everything of creation, He then called man into. existence and made Him the possessor, the owner, of the earth. The Lord made the body of Adam of the dust of the earth and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. Man is of high descent in virtue of his creation, Adam is called the son of God. Man is the jewel of creation, because, as the Bible tells us, they were made after God’s image and likeness.

These are not two different things, as Rome teaches, but they express the same thought, namely, that man was created in the likeness of God’s image, consisting in knowledge, righteousness and holiness. The whole essence of man, in ability, power, nature and attributes, was without any shortcomings. It proceeded from God’s hand perfectly good; thus man was the image-bearer of God. It is possible when we speak about likeness, that we mistakenly think it means to look like God. That cannot be true of our body, since God has no body. He is a Spirit. Therefore this is out of the question. What then can be the likeness?

God has given to man an imprint in the soul of His communicable attributes. This is the likeness of man to God. In the state of innocence, man was pure and had an upright relationship with God, just as this article states. However, when we speak of the image of God found in man, then we can make a division in a wider and narrower sense. In the wider sense, the image of God is visible in his whole appearance -in the figure of the body, in his government over the beasts, and in the immortality of the soul. The image of God in the narrow sense is knowledge, righteousness and holiness.

It has pleased the Lord to create some traces of His attributes in the soul of man. These attributes are infinite in God, but finite in man. Man knew God and rejoiced in Him as the all-sufficient God of his salvation. His mind was so enlightened that he knew God as the triune God and as the fountain of his salvation. The communion with God was his highest joy. Adam knew God, and his obedience to Him was not a burden, but the greatest good he had.

We cannot imagine what this has been for Adam, but we know what the church may say by faith: “I will behold Thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with Thy likeness.” In addition to this highest peak of knowledge, man also possessed reghteousness, which was an alility to be and to do good. Man wanted to fulfil God’s will and serve Him in uprightness. Man was also holy and without one sin, even not a sinful thought. The soul was as a brook of crystal, wherein not a speck of dust or any uncleanness was to be found. The soul went out to the Lord and rejoiced in the blessed communion with Him. Thus man lived in immediate communion and in the friendship of God. O, in what a glorious state was man created!

Thus we have seen that the Lord created man of the dust of the earth. In creating Eve, we know that the Lord caused a deep sleep to come upon Adam, and of one of his ribs the Lord made the woman and brought her to Adam. There we have the first marriage, an institution of the Lord. What a blessing that the Lord has permitted this to also exist after the fall; it is one of the few things left from Paradise. The first human couple lived under the Lord as king and queen in Paradise. There the wolf and the lamb lived together; there was peace on this earth since the relationship with the Lord was as it should be.

The perfect knowledge which Adam possessed became evident in his giving of names to all the animals. The Lord led all the animals to him, and he gave them names which were fit for them. In our days the names mean little or nothing, but this was not true for Adam and Eve. The names which he gave the beasts of the field expressed their very character. All these animals were also in subjection to Adam and Eve. Man was the center of the creation, and was the mouth of the universe to praise the Name of the Lord.

Adam and Eve lived in a continual communion with God, and walked with God as a friend with his friend. The whole world breathed peace and life, light and glory. If man would obey the Lord and continue to live to His glory, then they would receive an unchangeable glory. Solomon said, “Lo, this only have I found, that God has made man upright.” Herein we see that God had created man good, and we can never lay any blame upon the Lord for the misery into which we have come. Perhaps we will not do this with our lips, but there can come so many sinful thoughts in our hearts whereby we condemn the Lord.

How necessary it is to believe the truth about our creation, but it would be of greater benefit if, under the administration of the Holy Spirit, we learned that it is the Truth.

BIBLE QUIZ

Dear Boys and Girls,

As we look at our calendars, we will usually see the dates of Good Friday and Easter clearly shown, but on many calendars there is no mention made of Ascension Day and Pentecost. These, too, are important days for the church and should not pass by unnoticed. These days will already be passed when you receive this issue, but I thought it would be good to bring them to your attention, even though I am sure they were spoken of at church. This year Ascension Day was on May 4th (forty days after Easter) and Pentecost was May 14 (fifty days after Easter). Since they are important days, we will base our quiz on that subject. The first letters of the answers will spell out some words which Peter spoke on Pentecost, where he told what the Lord had said by the prophet Joel.

And now to answer our letters which we have again received--

LORETTA FAYE OLIVIER - Do you usually have a large garden, Loretta? We read about several gardens in the Bible. Can you think of some of them? We can imagine you are happy that you now have a minister. May the Lord cause it to be a blessing in your congregation.

ROBERT HERFST - How far is Cardinal Heights from your home, Robert? This time of the year is nice for bicycling, that is if you don’t have the wind against you. Many of the boys and girls have ben testing each other with the Know Your Bible Quiz Book. We are glad they are using it.

RONALD BERTRAM - How long do the gliders stay in the air, Ronald? Since they have no power of their own, I suppose they don’t always come down where they would like to. We find in all that we do that we are dependent upon conditions outside of our control, just as a glider.

DEBRA LYNN WITVOET - We are all quite well, Debra. There have not been so many warm days as yet, but trees are budding and the grass is getting green. The Bible shows plainly that the Lord rules also in regard to the weather, for He sends rain and storms, and causes also the storms to cease.

WILLY NEELS - Perhaps you can give some examples from the Bible, Willy, where the Lord has shown that He controls the wind and the rain. There are quite a few places where this is shown. There aren’t too many more days of school left, are there?

DAVID NEEF - It was nice to hear from you, David. You do have a long trip every day to get to school. What time do you leave in the morning? We are getting to know quite a few boys and girls from Timothy Christian School. Who is your teacher this year?

FLORENCE WESTERINGH - I read about the hot-dog sale in your year book, Florence, and it sounds as if most boys and girls like that event. What are you studying about in school at the moment? Did you have some special projects displayed at Open House?

ELISABETH VERBEEK - You did very well in finding examples of fire mentioned in the bible, Elisabeth. There are many more, but you gave good examples. We are glad that you liked the book which we sent, and we hope you will learn much from it.

ANITA VAN MOURIK - Congratulations on the new baby brother, Anita. Are you taking good care of him? Is your other brother older or younger than you? In the Bible we can read about a girl who watched over her little baby brother. Do you know the name of that girl?

JOHN BRINK - How are the rabbits doing now, John? How many do you have? Snow comes rather unexpectedly at this time of the year, but it doesn’t usually stay very long. Do you still have lots of pigs on your farm? You were building the new barn when we were there.

ANDY DEN BOER - Did you find the quiz was quite easy this month, Andy? Since we sent out quite a few of the Know Your Bible Quiz Books, we should be able to make the quizzes a little more difficult for those boys and girls who received them.

MARTIN SCHOUTEN - I can see that you manage to keep quite busy, Martin. It sounds as if you could have your own museum. We can only be amazed at all the wonders of creation which we can see in the air, on the ground and in the waters.

MARIE REMUS - If we are spared and are well, we hope to be at the Youth Conference this summer, Marie. So much can happen before that time, as we do not know what tomorrow will bring. Are you anxious for summer vacation to begin?

NANCY DE JONG - Do you live close enough to the school so that you can see them working on it, Nancy? You will have to keep me informed of the progress being made. We can imagine how happy you are to see the school being rebuilt.

MARY MALJAARS - They did real well at the Bake Sale, Mary. There must have been lots of things to sell. What did your class have in its display? Your teacher is really going to travel this summer, isn’t he? We hope he may have a nice trip.

GARY JOHN SOMMER - Did you like your book, Gary? We had one of those books for a long time, and our children got a lot of use out of it. It is soon evident that we do not know all the answers. Was it a large family that came from holland?

CATHY NEELS - You were right, Cathy, the word fire is first mentioned in the Bible in the history of Sodom and Gomorrah. However, in Genesis 3 there is something which has to do with fire. See if you can find it, and let me know.

JOYLYNN MAST - Sukey Harley had many troubles in her life, Joylynn, but she received of the Lord that “one thing needful”. Possibly you would wish for her blessings, but not her troubles. We hope you and your family are well.

WILLIAM VERBEEK - You asked when we start working on the following month’s issue. Well, William, it is almost a continuing process. Just like the calendar, when we are at the end of one month, it is time to begin the following month.

JACKIE DEN DEKKER - Did you receive your book, Jackie? There are always one or two who forget to put their names on their answers and you forgot your address. Sometimes we manage to figure it out, but sometimes it is just impossible.

JACKIE DE JONG - What did you name the baby goat, Jackie? Is there much work to take care of a goat? Do you know of any stories of the Bible in which a goat is mentioned? I can think of several of them.

YVONNE HERFST - Is the second budgie still living, Yvonne? It is quite surprising how many different kinds of pets the boys and girls write about. Of course, when it comes to ponies and goats, you have to live on a farm in order to keep them.

JOHN STAPEL - I suppose there is lots of work to be done on the farm at this time of the year, John. Outside the birds are busy picking up materials for their nests, and these are all signs of spring. Give our greetings to your family.

JENNIFER VERBEEK - Do you live on a farm, Jennifer? Are you quite near to the Camp River School? It probably isn’t so easy to have the school divided in three places, especially if these places are quite far apart.

DAVID BRINK - What color is your new car, David? Were your parents able to go to British Columbia after the snow cleared up? The weather conditions at this time of year make it a little easier to travel than during the winter months.

EDWARD VAN WYK - It was very nice to hear from you, Edward. Are you the youngest in your family? Do you have some chores to do every day in order to help on the farm? Lots of hands make the work lighter, they say.

JACQUELINE VAN HOEPEN - We are also having very changeable weather lately, Jacqueline. Ther are not many nice days in succession. Have you been reading your book which we sent? We hope all boys and girls are busy reading them.

HERMAN VANDER MEULEN - It is strange that you did not receive your February issue, Herman. Perhaps it was lost in the mail somewhere. We have asked them to send you another one. Will you be glad when the last day of school arrives?

MAY DEN DEKKER - The questions are not so difficult to make, May, but it does take some time. When we see all the answers we receive, then we know that the boys and girls are studying their Bibles, and that our time is not wasted.

ANN MARLENE VANDER MEULEN - Your letter is the last one this time, Ann. Did you receive the replacement for the February one that didn’t arrive? It probably will not be possible for you to attend the Youth Conference as you did last year, will it?

Many thanks, boys and girls, for your answers and letters. May the Lord spare us together for many months, and may our studies be blessed by Him to the welfare of our souls.

With love,

Your friend,

“Uncle Garret”

THE CAPTAIN OF A WHALER

Many years ago a young man was made a captain of a whaling ship that sailed out on the Pacific Ocean. About ten days before he was scheduled to sail, the first ship having been committed to his charge, it so happened that he attended a church service at a certain place. There he heard preaching which he could not forget and which left deep impressions on his heart. A very remarkable change took place in the heart of this young man, who had hitherto been so indifferent and light-hearted, so that his friends did not know him any more. He, who formerly never gave a command without swearing, did not curse any more. His curses were changed into prayers and cries.

While at sea, for several weeks they waited in vain for the appearance of a whale. Finally, two hours before sunset on a Sunday evening, the long awaited call rang out, “There is one!” At once everything was in motion on deck. The men were getting ready to let the boats down into the sea and enter them. At first the excitement of his men worked infectiously upon him, but the temptation soon passed. The words, “Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy,” sounded powerfully in his soul; and with a loud voice he commanded that not a boat should be let down into the sea that day.

We can imagine the anger and the resistance of his men. The captain had a hard time trying to convince them, but he did not budge an inch and his brave attitude quieted the rebellion somewhat. And when he promised that he alone would assume all responsibility for the damage they would suffer, they soon became restful again.

“But will the owner of our ship be pleased with this loss?” asked the first mate mockingly. He was the officer next in rank below the captain, and he thought he would show a little of his authority now. “I and all the other men want a signed statement from you that you are acting on your own authority and that we have all protested against your action.”

In a friendly way the captain replied that such a statement would not be legal if it would be drawn up on Sunday, but he would do so the following day. He did not say this without sorrow, because he felt that his actions could have harmful consequences for him. What shipowner would accept him as a captain?

The first mate began to feel some compassion towards the captain and said, “See here, Captain, I have a wife and five children to take care of, and when Providence brings a whale in sight on Sunday I believe that we must catch him. At least that is my viewpoint.”

In the meantime Morgan, the captain, let himself drop on a bench. Completely lost in his thoughts, he was not even aware that his partner was with him. He was continually repeating the words to himself, “Thy will be done!” His view was directed to the setting sun in the west, when suddenly he was aroused from his musing by the first mate, who exclaimed, “Captain! Look how fast the barometer is going down!”

It was very fortunate that none of the men had left the ship, and fortunate for the ship that the crew was complete, because within half an hour every hand was astir and busy. It was the beginning of a struggle with a fierce hurricane which lasted for three days. The Lord heard the many prayers and protected them all wonderfully, but when the storm was over they found that they were hundreds of miles from the place where the storm first struck them. For all the fears and terrors they endured, however, they were again richly rewarded. This was God’s merciful hand, and the captain bowed low to give thanks and honor to the Keeper of Israel. Although the place where the mighty hand of God had directed them during the storm was hitherto one of the poorest locations for fishing, it now became one of the richest ones. The captain must have thought about the words of the Lord Jesus, “Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and ye shall find.” When the Lord comes, He often comes unperceived and unexpectantly, that He may receive all glory. He says in His blessed Word, “Call upon Me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify Me.”

When the sea was calm, the men found themselves in the midst of a large number of whales and soon had captured two of them. They caught so many that after ten months they could already return to Sidney, while at other times it took a considerably longer period before a ship was loaded. The owner was so surprised when he heard about this wonderful deliverance and blessing that he let it entirely up to the captain whether or not to set out boats on the Sabbath. By the grace of God, Morgan held fast to his principle, and for a number of years no whaler brought in such a rich cargo - except one.

God moves in a mysterious way
His wonders to perform;
He sets His footsteps in the sea,
And rides upon the storm.

THE LORD HEARS

When Moses stood with arms spread wide,
Success was found on Israel’s side;
But when through weariness they failed,
That moment Amalek prevailed.

Wrestling prayer can wonders do,
Bring relief in deepest straits;
Prayer can force a passage through
Iron bars and brazen gates.

Hezekiah on his knees
Proud Assyria’s host subdued!
And when smitten with disease,
Had his life by prayer renewed.

Peter, though confined and chained,
Prayer prevailed and brought him out;
When Elijah prayed, it rained,
After three long years of drought.
