Part VII

When we no longer know the way, then God still knows it. When we get to our wit’s end, then God still has counsel, and when it becomes impossible with us, then it is still possible with Him.

We must fall outside so that we may fall in with God. We read in Psalm 127: “For so He giveth His beloved sleep,” not sleeping, but as if they were asleep.

When we may become before God what we really are, then God becomes for us what He is. Enemies are reconciled with God, and the ungodly are justified.

Then we experience that we can never bring ourselves there. We do not want to be saved in such a way But God prepares His people for that by the power of His divine grace.

For that reason I would call to that people whose case is hopeless:

“Hope in the Lord, ye waiting saint and He
Will well provide.
For mercy and redemption, full and free,
With Him abide.
From sin and evil, mighty though they seem,
His arm almighty, will His saints redeem.”

Psalter No. 362:3

It is all God’s work from the beginning to the end. We cannot give ourselves anything; neither can we help others.

It is also a privilege that we must keep our hands off. God does not give His honor to another, neither His praise to a graven image.

And: that which is impossible with man, is possible with God. We see in all this the sovereignty and omnipotence of God; also in the imputation of His divine grace. One receives the blessing early, and the other late; some at the end of their life, and also some in the hour of death. But it applies to all who have been known of the Father, purchased and redeemed by the Son, and have been quickened and wrought upon by the Holy Spirit, as the Church sings in Psalter No. 420:5,

“He hears the needy when they cry,
He saves their souls when death draws nigh,
This God is our salvation.”

That work requires no advertising. It speaks for itself. The Lord Himself bears witness to it. Man’s work comes to an end, and by and by goes up in flames, but we need not worry about the work of God. God maintains His work and finishes His work. Everything opposes and attacks it.

At times, the devil is permitted, even at the end of their life, to oppress and harass those people, but that murderer from the beginning shall not have the last word.

But Zion’s eternal King shall call to that people, “Come ye blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.” When that world-conquering faith may be exercised in the power of the Holy Spirit, then it testifies:

He shall finish His work for me.
But unto the end, their prayer is:
“May not Thy works in mercy wrought
E’er come to nought
Or be forsaken.”

Psalter No. 429:4b

May it please the Lord for His Name’s sake and for Christ’s sake to bless and santify these few lines to many hearts. There is much advertising in the world, and no less in the church, but there is nothing of God in it. How necessary it is, that God opens our eyes, and that also from our hearts all these useless things are removed. God desires truth in the inward parts.

“Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me and know my thoughts: and see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting,” Ps. 139:23, 24.

May God begin, if in our life there has never been a true beginning, and if the Lord has made a beginning, may He then shed His light upon it, but also finish the work to His honor and glory.

That concerns first of all His honor. Moses said, “What shalt Thou then do with Thy great Name?” Christ shall be exalted thereby; the Holy Spirit shall be praised and thanked, but also those privileged people shall forever end with all these blessings in God.
