TIMOTHY CHRISTIAN SCHOOL NEW BUILDING DEDICATION CHILLIWACK, B.C.
Within a year after our first building burned down, we were greatly privileged to officially open the new building of Timothy Christian School. It was already in use since September, but is only now nearing completion. To mark this blessing from the Lord, the School Board desired a special gathering to express our gratitude to the Lord. “Except the LORD built the house, they labor in vain that build it” (Ps. 127:1a)
So, with more than 600 people gathered in the auditorium of the new school, Rev. A.W. Verhoef, president of the School Board, opened the meeting with the singing of Psalter 429:1,2 and with prayer. He read the opening verses of Deuteronomy 6 and stressed the need and necessity of teaching our children diligently the statutes of the Lord. Our offspring must be told the deeds of the Lord in the past, what He commands for today, and what He promises for the future. Rev. Verhoef admonished the people to be humble in all things. Where did the fire bring us? Where did the rebuilding bring us? If it brings us to the lowest place and ascribes honour to God, then it is well.
In Dutch the audience sang Psalm 65:1 (Psalter 419:1)
Forth from Thy courts, Thy sacred dwelling,
In jubilant accord,
We hear sweet strains of praises swelling,
O Israel’s mighty Lord!
To God, Who hears our imploration,
We come to pay our vow,
Soon men from every tribe and nation
Before our God shall bow.
Next, Psalm 96 was alternately recited and sung by some students from grades 8 and 9.
Mr. J.W. Beeke, principal of the school, spoke some words of appreciation to the many people who helped in different ways to rebuild the school. He also recounted how the Lord had testified through acts of judgment and mercy in taking away the first building, and providing a second and larger building. He expressed the hope that we would not regard it so much as a building of our works as a building provided by the Lord. He said that a token of appreciation would be given to the minister for all his labors with the school and invited everyone to view the school after the service.
Mayor Wm. Welch of the city of Chilliwack and Mr. Harvey Schroeder, M.L.A. for Chilliwack, both wished the very best for the school and hoped God’s blessing would rest upon it.
The vice-president of the School Board, Elder J. denBok, closed the evening activities by pointing to our responsibility in properly raising our children in the fear of the Lord, in this difficult world. He hoped there would be continued support from the congregation, both financially - for the needs are not gone - but also especially support by prayer. With the singing of Psalter 403:2,3, the doxology, and thanksgiving, he closed the meeting. Afterwards coffee was served and an open house held to view the entire school. Many took the opportunity to view the projects, demonstrations, and drawings made by the students.
