THE CONFESSION OF FAITH ARTICLE XX
That God Has Manifested His Justice and Mercy In Christ
This article and the one which follows are very important, as they speak about the labor of Christ as Surety and Mediator for His church. From eternity Christ represented His church, and He alone could restore God's attributes, which is such a comfort for the church. If this satisfaction for the church were not possible, they would then have to provide it themselves, which would only be possible in their eternal damnation, as we cannot work out our own salvation. God could not renounce His attributes, of which two are mentioned in this article of our confession.
The Lord reveals something of Himself in His attributes, and they are not different and distinct from each other. It seems to be so in our comprehension when we see the several manifestations of God's perfections towards the creatures. However, they never contradict each other! They form a unity in Him.
God's justice and mercy are spoken of in this article, as related with Christ's suffering and death. All people are sinners, deserving temporal and eternal punishment. Although we have learned this under the administration of the Holy Spirit, the question still lives in the heart, "Is there no way by which we may escape that punishment, and be again received into favor?" How could that be possible? Will the Lord forget sins? We know the answer given in our catechism, "God will have His justice satisfied." Full satisfaction has to be provided, but it is not possible for man to do so. It can only be fulfilled by the Mediator, of Whom was previously spoken.
Our article reads: "We believe that God, Who is perfectly merciful and just, sent His Son to assume that nature, in which the disobedience was committed, to make satisfaction in the same, and to bear the punishment of sin by His most bitter passion and death." Here we are told - that which is impossible with man is possible with the Lord. This is explained in many ways in the Word of God, even from the very beginning. It is very clear in this article that the Lord is just in all His ways. God's justice and mercy do not form a contradiction. In this same way the Lord revealed Himself to Moses in Exodus 34:6, "The LORD, the LORD God, merciful and gracious, long-suffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity…etc." In many other places of Scripture the Lord Himself speaks of these attributes.
The justice of God is the Divine perfection by which He hates and punishes sin. The mercy of God is His goodness toward a miserable, elect sinner, by which He daily restores him in the state of grace through the Mediator Jesus. You can understand that God's mercy is related to the salvation of the church, which will be saved only out of grace. But God's justice is also related to it!!
There have always been many wrong interpretations about the mercy of God. It is sometimes explained as some kind of weakness in God whereby He is moved with compassion towards man. This would be similar to Eli, the high priest, who did not become angry when his children sinned. Others do not want to hear about the justice of God, and speak only about His mercy. How foolish man is to deceive himself for eternity, since such a God does not exist. They wander in this way to the end, only to find out that they made the biggest mistake of their life.
Many concerned consciences are silenced by priests and false doctrines which teach that God is only love. May the Lord open their eyes, for then it will be different. They will see that the Lord is just and hates sin. Such sinners have love for all God's attributes. In the beginning God's people will try to make satisfaction for all the debts they have made, but in a hard way they will learn that this is impossible. The Holy Spirit will make it known to them that this is only possible in Christ.
What a wonder it is that the Lord gave His only begotten Son to this end - to make satisfaction, to restore God's attributes and to open a way for the church. The debt of His people was laid upon Him to satisfy God's justice so that the Lord could be merciful to a lost sinner in himself. Let us never forget the justice of the Lord, which is so often forgotten in our days; by nature we want to be saved without giving satisfaction to this attribute. In man's opinion, the Lord should see this as a shortcoming and no more; we cannot help it that we have become so evil.
But each transgression makes us worthy of death before the Lord, because it is a sin against the most High Being, Who can not have communion with sin. He hates sin and will certainly punish them, as He has made known already in Paradise: "In the day that thou eatest thereof, thou shalt surely die." If the Lord would not now do this, He would not be God any longer. He must punish sin because of His holy nature, because He is Lawgiver and Judge, and because of the nature of the law. Cursed is everyone who transgresses against the law.
You will ask, How then can the Lord be merciful? This is explained in the passion weeks when the Lord Jesus has done everything to the salvation of His people. He was obedient to the law, but also underwent the punishment of sin. Have we already learned the necessity of this satisfaction of Christ? We all know this historically, but it is so necessary to experience it in our personal life, which can only be by the administration of the Spirit. The first work of the Spirit in the life of God's children is to reprove them of sin, whereby they become so unhappy, realizing how sinful they have been and still are. The three thousand on the day of Pentecost are an example of it.
The Lord still works in this way. When we try to give satisfaction to the Lord, we will find out that it is impossible, because we increase our sin daily. How wonderful are the ways of the Lord, as in this way the need of Christ and His satisfaction are revealed in the soul. In Him we are safe, but outside of Him we are not. May the Lord instruct us!
BIBLE QUIZ
Dear Boys and Girls,
One of the important things which we need for our daily lives is the clothes we wear. If we look in the stores, we find many different types and styles of clothing. Each article is made to a certain size and shape. There is also mention made of different types of clothing in the Bible.
The other day I read that each person has by nature the ability to make garments. The author of the book spoke about Adam and Eve, who made the first ones. And then he pointed out the different types of covering which people make. The first type was a rough coat of sin, doing all kinds of wickedness very openly, much as the people of Sodom and Gomorrah did. The second type was a nicer garment of good works. Those who made such garments were quite proud of them. And the third type was a religious coat, and the person who made this coat was thinking that he could stand before God in such a garment of his own making. But then the author said that all of these coats are of no value, and we need a covering which God alone can give. What kind of coat do we wear?
Our quiz is about clothing, and the first letters will spell out four words found in Genesis 3.

And now to answer the letters which we have again received --
RONALD BERTRAM - How is your mother now, Ronald? We hope that everything turned out well. Yes, the work of the Holy Spirit and of the Great Physician is necessary for each person born in the world. We see our picture so clearly in God's Word.
GAIL DEN HOED - Yes, Gail, our hearts and minds are filled with the things of the world, rather than with the Word of God and the things of God. The Lord must make room for Himself in our hearts. We hope you are asking Him to do this.
HENDRIKA DE VOS - I am sure you will be glad to move into your new house, Hendrika. There is another house which David spoke about in the Bible. He said he was glad when he could go to that house. Do you know what house it was and where it tells us this?
COREY VELTMAN - Did you find your name in the list this time, Corey? The names are always one month late in getting listed. We try hard not to miss anyone, but it does happen, I know. Were the questions rather easy this time?
NANCY DE JONG - Did the pheasant eggs hatch, Nancy? It is always a great wonder when we see a little chick come out of an egg, and must always remind us of the Great Creator. Men speak about the Seven Wonders of the World, but it is not necessary to go very far to see any number of them.
MARLENE VAN OORT - Do you like living in Chilliwack, Mariene? I am sure it is quite a change for you. What a great blessing Jacob had, for the Lord said to him, "Behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest."
DANIEL VRIESELAAR - You will notice that the 'Man of Geneva' was also a student and later a teacher, Daniel. The Lord used his education for the good of the church in those days, but also for the church of today. It should give us a good reason to study hard in school. Did you like the book?
MARIANNE NEELS - Did you get a good report card, Marianne? Everyone is not able to get top grades, but, if we do our best, we can be satisfied with our marks. The Bible also speaks about those who are not willing to work. Can you think of any texts about this?
ELIZABETH VANDENBERG - Are you still wearing a patch on one eye, Elizabeth? I can imagine that is not very easy for you. How much more difficult it would be if you could not see at all. There are people who also have that trouble, just as there were in the Bible days.
SANDRA MALJAARS - Where does the child live who was adopted by your mission club, Sandra? How thankful we must be when we are blessed with a home, with parents who teach us God's Word, with food and drink, etc. We cannot count all the blessings which the Lord gives us. TERESA DE VOS - Weeds seem to grow much easier and more quickly than the things we have planted, Teresa, at least it often seems that way. That is a picture of our hearts; the things that should not be there are more often there than the things that should be.
HELEN VAN BRUGGE - Sometimes as we travel we see markers along the way which show the miles, Helen. Birthdays are something like them, with each birthday another year along the path of life. But we cannot read on a map how many birthdays we are to have.
JACKIE DE JONG - Have you ever been up in an airplane, Jackie? When the first airplane was invented, it was so tiny in comparison to the big planes of today. But one little problem can cause a crash, and so we see that the Lord must protect us wherever we are.
CATHY VISSCHER - Was the bike-a-thon a success, Cathy? There must have been quite a group of bicycles travelling along the roads that day. Do you know how many there were? I don't ride my bike very often, but it is good exercise for young and old.
GARRETT SCHIPPER - The weather is quite warm at the moment here in Kalamazoo, Garrett. Tomorrow we are leaving on a little vacation, so we hope we have more nice weather. It is too bad that we are so often discontented with the weather we receive.
ALISA STAM - We are all quite well, Alisa. Do you have only one cow on your farm? Did you give the calf a name? It is amazing to see the care that a cow gives her newborn calf. We read about cows and their calves in the story of the Philistines and the ark which they had captured.
WES VAN DEN BRINK - Is Hemlock Valley quite far from your school, Wes? I remember going up Mount Baker when we visited there, but that was in the state of Washington. How large a mountain is to us when we look at it, and yet the Lord created them in a moment of time.
JENNIFER WUBS - Your letter is the last one this time, Jennifer. We hope the boys and girls of your school won't all give up on the Bible quiz during the summer months. The study of the Bible shouldn't have a vacation. The psalmist said the Word of God was his meditation day and night.
Many thanks, boys and girls, for your replies to our quiz. May the Lord bless our studies so that they might all be to His honor. We hope to hear from all of you again next month.
With love,
Your friend,
"Uncle Garret"
MAKING CONFESSION AND THE QUESTIONS ASKED
(continued)
Concerning the questions which are asked when public confession in made, it is certainly necessary that we write briefly about them. Those who have recently made confession can reconsider them, and the older ones will be reminded of that which they once promised before the face of the Lord.
Question 1 reads: Do you acknowledge the doctrine of our church, which you have learned, heard and confessed, to be the true and complete doctrine of salvation, conforming with the sacred Scriptures?
It thus concerns the true and complete doctrine of salvation. There can be no doctrine of salvation without conforming with the sacred Scriptures. What does the Holy Scriptures teach us? Well, the Holy Trinity, creating of heaven and earth in six days, the fall of Adam and the imputation of Adam's fall upon all men (Romans 6); the dying, the death and the resurrection of man; the sentence of the three-fold death, thus man's state of death in Adam.
What else does the Holy Scriptures teach us? Predestination, that is election and rejection from eternity; the two covenants, the covenant of works and the covenant of grace. The covenant of redemption and the covenant of grace are not essentially separated from each other, but they are really one and the same covenant.
The Holy Scriptures teach us that Christ appeared from eternity as Mediator for the elect in Him, according to the foreknowledge of God the Father. (See John 17:9) They are those given unto Him.
Christ is promised to the fathers and is come into the world. He merited salvation through His suffering and death. He arose from the dead and ascended into heaven. From heaven He applies salvation by His Spirit, Who is given to the church. Our fathers confessed to believe that from the beginning to the end of the world He gathers, defends and preserves to Himself by His Spirit and Word, a church chosen to everlasting life, agreeing in true faith; and that I am and forever shall remain, a living member thereof. (Answer 54 - Heidelberg Cathechism). The Lord proclaims salvation in Christ, exhorting, warning and externally calling all those who hear the Word. It calls to conversion, it invites unto salvation, it offers Christ unto lost sinners. (See the 3rd and 4th Heads of Doctrine of the Canons of Dort - Articles 9 & 10. See also Rev. G.H. Kersten regarding the means of grace in his Treatise of the Compenduim). Internal calling by the Holy Ghost is necessary. The word is to the one the savour of death unto death, and to the other the savour of life unto life. (II Corinthians 2:16).
This is the doctrine of salvation confessed by our fathers and also the doctrine of our church. It is the doctrine which you have learned, which is confessed and learned by your parents, and in which they have had you instructed. It is the doctrine also learned by your ministers and office-bearers, which you have learned from them. Paul could say to Timothy that he had taught him the doctrine. Having heard it from the mouth of ministers and having seen it in their walk; that which you heard from the mouth of the truly devout; see the result of their walk even in times of deep decline. That doctrine you now confess as the true doctrine of salvation. Many confess this doctrive with the mouth and strive for it. It is a privilige in these times wherein are signs of renewal, modernizing, and denying of the truth. The doctrine of evolution is gaining ground; the doctrine of free grace is mocked.
It is necessary to experience that doctrine, so that the acknowledging of it be inscribed in the heart as it were with the eternal engravings of a signet.
Question 2 reads, "Do you promise, by the grace of God, to continue steadfastly in the profession of this doctrine and to live and die in accordance therewith?"
Do we ever seriously consider this question? It points us to the deep dependence upon the grace of God. Shouldn't this compel us to pray for the grace of God? The temptations are so great. Our heart is only sin, and the wolves in sheep clothing come to us with such friendliness. It all appears so genuine. Hence the grace of God and the help of the Lord is necessary in order to remain unshakeable in that confession. It is alarming how many, after a shorter or longer time, say farewell to their confession. The holy oath made before God's face becomes perjury, or they did not believe it then at the time their 'yes' was spoken. The causes of this we will speak of in a following chapter.
There follows: "to live and die in accordance therewith." We know that many have remained with this doctrine and have also died therein. How great the privilege is, it is not enough to salvation. The Lord certainly connects a termporal blessing to it and grants that their children observe their footsteps. He works also in family lines; the examples of this are many.
It concerns the only comfort in life and in death, the comfort of faith for God's children received through the experiencing of the three things: misery, deliverance, and gratitude.
O beloved youth, may the Lord grant steadfastness; that your life might be a praying life, a life for God. Outside of God everything is comfortless. Comfort is for mourning and afflicted ones. Men speak much about comfort without ever having been truly mournful before God. That is imaginary comfort!
BEFORE HIM
Whatever you think both in joy and in woe,
Think nothing you would not like Jesus to know.
Whatever you say, in a whisper or clear,
Say nothing you would not like Jesus to hear.
Whatever you read, though the page may allure,
Read nothing unless you are perfectly sure
Consternation would not be seen in your look
If God should say solemnly, "Show me that book!"
Whatever you write with haste or with heed,
Write nothing you would not like Jesus to read;
Whatever you sing, in the midst of your glees,
Sing nothing that God's listening ear could displease;
Wherever you go, never go where you'd fear
God's question being asked you
"What doest thou heare?"

A NEED TO PRAY
When David was a shepherd boy,
God's praises then he sang, with joy;
Nor did he think when in that place,
That he should thus God's Name disgrace. If God withhold His keeping power,
And leaves us in temptation's hour,
With such a wicked heart within,
We're capable of every sin.
And if we're by the Spirit taught, Rebuked we'll be for foolish thoughts,
For, in God's Word, we read therein,—
"The thought of foolishness is sin."
While in this sinful world we stay,
There'll always be a need to pray—
"Have mercy, Lord, upon us too,"
"For sin is mixed with all we do."
