REPORT OF THE GENERAL FUND BOOK AND PUBLISHING COMMITTEE OF THE ETHERLANDS REFORMED CONGREGATIONS

Dear Consistories, Church Members, and Friends:

At the request of our General Fund Book and Publishing Committee we desire to inform you of the “book activities” taking place within our denomination, as well as provide you with a list of books that are currently available.

In the first place, the first volume of the 2-volume set of Reformed Dogmatics by Rev. G. H. Kersten (founder of our denomination) is finally available. This is a landmark publication for our English-speaking congregations, as it is the first time that a full dogmatics (systematic treatment of the truths and doctrines of God’s Word) has been made available in the English language, written by one of our own ministers. (The second volume is approximately 2/3 completed). We sincerely hope that each consistory do all in their power to see to it that every family receives a copy of these volumes. If possible, we would encourage consistories to finance a bulk purchase so that no home in our denomination is left without this important reference work on all areas of doctrine. One of Rev. Kersten’s primary purposes in writing his dogmatics was for family use—to be both a tool for studying and reference work for doctrinal questions and various matters that may arise. Parents: we hope that you will also order copies for your children, so that when they grow older and leave your home one day they may have a copy of this sound, practical, and experimental work to go with them. Only 2,000 copies are being printed now, so please place your order immediately to avoid disappointment.

Secondly, the life of Rev. VanDam, Rev. DeGier’s Church Order, and volume 3 of Religious Stories for Young and Old are currently being printed, and should be available in approximately one month. They may be pre-ordered (see list below) together with your order for the Dogmatics. (Volume 1 of Religious Stories sold so rapidly that a second printing already had to take place, but volume 2 is moving much slower. We trust that this is an oversight of consistories and members. Especially with the publication of children’s books we would encourage consistories to give out sound volumes to catechism classes. Traditionally, many consistories give out a book to each class at the end of the year. We remind you to place your order immediately to avoid disappointment due to mail rush.)

Finally, two or three other volumes are currently being worked on for the welfare of our congregations. The financial need is great. Publishing of the Dogmatics alone will come to approximately $20,000. We have no surplus, and therefore urge the congregations to take a special collection for this worthy cause (especially those who have not yet done so in 1980). Also any individual who feels the need for sound literature in the homes of our families is kindly requested to send a donation to our treasurer, Simon Post, R.R. 2, Doon, Iowa 51235.

Church orders should be placed with our clerk, Bert Harskamp, 1020 N. Main, Sioux Center, Iowa 51250. Individual orders may be placed with him also, or, as the books are made available, with Bible Truth Books, P.O. Box 2373, Kalamazoo, Mich. 49003.

We hope and pray that the Lord may richly bless the printed word to the hearts of many, both young and old, to the honor and glory of His Name.

THE REV. A VERGUNST

The latest Synod of our churches in the Netherlands has given the Rev. A. Vergunst an honorable discharge from teaching in the Theological School of our churches in Rotterdam. He will be released on December 31, 1980.

It is his plan to leave the Netherlands on January 16, 1981. He hopes to make the voyage by boat with his wife and two children so that they will arrive about the end of January. His installation and inauguration in Kalamazoo will take place, the Lord willing, during the first week of February.

After that Rev. Vergunst hopes to take over the instruction of our student. May it all be in the favor of the Lord, for the edification of the church, and above all for the glory of God’s most holy Name.

For all of us, but also for the office bearers in the church of God, it is so necessary to consider what we read in Psalm 127:1: “Except the LORD build the house, they labor in vain that build it; except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.”

May the Lord remember the consistory and congregation of Kalamazoo in the future, and make the ministry of our brother to be a rich blessing, also for the Classis into whose midst we heartily welcome him.

W.C. Lamain

A NOTE OF THANKS

We feel the need to give, first of all to the Lord, but then also to all the ministers, various consistories, members and baptized members of the congregations in the United States and Canada, our heartfelt thanks for all the evidences of love and affection we received at our 50th wedding anniversary. This also includes our children.

It is impossible personally to write to all in East and West, Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, and even Vancouver Island, in answer to all the mail we received.

May the Lord receive all the honor, for we are robbers of God’s honor, and can never appreciate the blessings in the right manner.

Rev. and Mrs. W.C. Lamain
