O Timothy keep that which is committed to thy trust. II Timothy 6:20

THE CONFESSION OF FAITH ARTICLE XXVIII

That Every One is Bound to Join Himself to the True Church.

We do not believe, as Rome does, in a church which gives salvation, for then salvation would be the work of man. No church is able to save. However, according to God’s Word, THE CHURCH will be saved, and for this Jesus Christ is the only and all-sufficient Savior. In this article which we now consider, there is spoken about the church and our duty to join ourselves to it. It is a very serious subject, especially for the present days.

With sorrow we must admit that the condition of the church is not at all good. Its walls are cracked and broken down as in the days of Amos. Millions have completely broken with the church, and this number increases alarmingly over the whole world. Is it not the great decay before the end of the world will come, whereof God’s Word speaks?

There are people who never go to church, but to them the above does not apply. They are a socalled non-ecclesiastical people (in Dutch - onkerkelijken). They say that there is no church any longer, and therefore read the old fathers at home. Although there are God-fearing people among them, this practice has a great danger in it, for in succeeding generations you see generally a great decay, and little or nothing remains of the religion of the parents. If one felt a little of the great responsibility of bringing up children, he would then confess that this is not the right way. Really, such an attitude is contrary to the Word of God, for He has promised that there will be a church upon earth until the end of the world. Is this not encouraging in a time when so many things discourage us?

The Lord will continue to build His church, and for this He uses His Word which is preached or read. You will probably ask then why so many people leave the truth. For many the great prosperity which we enjoy is too much; they think they are able to take care of themselves and don’t need the Lord any longer. How foolish! Others are offended by the many shortcomings of the church. Although they are not perfect themselves, they are looking for a perfect church, and this does not belong to this dispensation.

Some think it is not right that unconverted persons are in the church, and they seek a church of only converted persons. We should remember the Word of the Lord that it will be here upon earth only in part; think of the parables of the net with good and bad fish and of the field with wheat and tares. In Philippians 3:12, Paul said, “Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.”

It is true that the Lord has said that the church should be as the light of the world, but often because of the persecutions of the enemy it is more like a night lodge in a garden of cucumbers. Nevertheless, the church may not be hidden, but it should reveal itself. When we see the church and think of the members of it, then we must realize that they are not all converted; the Lord only knows who his people are! One day the Lord will purge His floor. This will happen at the end of the world, and then it will be seen who feared the Lord and who did not fear Him.

In church history there is the well-known name of Jean de Labadie. He did not want to hear of a church with converted and unconverted people, but he attempted to have a church of only true believers. He took the fan in his own hand and thoroughly purged his floor, which is the work of Christ Himself. The church of de Labadie became a disaster. We may not judge another’s faith, although the Lord has given marks to know true and false faith. The fruit will tell what kind of tree it is! Remember the parable of the wise and foolish virgins. They had no external differences, but internally there was a difference as night and day. Judas was also among the disciples! In the preaching and on house-visitation we must take this in account. Not all the members of the church may be considered as regenerated. Isaiah’s message was woe for the wicked and well for the righteous.

This article also shows very clearly that not all members of the church belong to THE CHURCH which is chosen by the Lord from eternity and for which Christ has given Himself as a ransom. They are called by Word and Spirit. This is the essence of the church, as this article also points out: “We believe, since this holy congregation is an assembly of those who are saved,...” These are the people who are drawn by the Lord from darkness to light and who will receive the salvation of the Lord. According to Isaiah 62:12 they are called an holy people: “And they shall call them, The holy people, The redeemed of the Lord.” In Psalm 111:1 they are called the upright: “I will praise the Lord with my whole heart, in the assembly of the upright, and in the congregation.”

Outside of this congregation there is no salvation, as the article so plainly says, “We believe, since this holy congregation is an assembly of those who are saved, and that out of it there is no salvation,..” The Lord has made His habitation in His church, and outside of it He will not show mercy, as we read in Hebrews 12:22, “But ye are come unto mount Zion and unto the city of the living God.” All those who will not be saved will be outside, as we read in Revelation 22:15, “For without are dogs, etc.” These and many other texts show clearly that not all members of the churches are also members of the one CHURCH.

Nevertheless, we are responsible for our deeds and called to join the true church, for this article says, “That no person of whatsoever state or condition he may be, ought to withdraw himself, to live in a separate state from it.” This we also find in Hebrews 10:25, “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” When grace is bestowed upon us, we will seek communion with other believers. When this is not possible, they are sad, as we hear from Heman, “Thou hast put away mine acquaintance far from me.” David was also sorrowful when he was not able to go up to the temple, “My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for the courts of the Lord: my heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God.” Herein we are condemned when we do not join the church.

It is also a condemnation of the sects who exalt themselves above all churches. Every one who does not want to bow under the yoke of King Jesus withdraws from the church. This is in force for members and ministers. We find this through all ages, also in our days when new groups are formed. Often it is a desire for power and the lust of selfishness, but above all it is rebellion against the yoke of Christ.

Sorrow should fill our hearts when we look about us and see that there is so much division in the churches, whereby the body of Christ is rent. We have to be most careful, for the devil goes around as an angel of light, especially when there are schisms. It has always been his aim to make divisions. Not where enmity is, but there where love is found will the Lord give His blessing. Love and divisions do not go together.

And now to answer the letters which we have again received—

ESTELLA SCHOUTEN - It was good to hear from you again, Estella. Even though they like school, I think all boys and girls enjoy the summer holidays. It does seem strange for us to speak of summer holidays in December and January, but that is not strange for you in New Zealand. KAREN WESDYK - What is it that you don’t like about school, Karen? If we stop to think about the many good parts there are in going to school, the things we don’t like are soon forgotten. Was that part of a poem which you had to recite for Sunday School?

DEBRA WITVOET-We had one Sunday morning of more than ten degrees below zero, Debra. Do your goats eat quite a lot of food every day? I suppose in the summer time they can also eat the grass, but that is not possible in the winter months. MARGARET SLOOTWEG - We are quite well, Margaret. It is a blessing when the Lord gives us healthy bodies and minds, for we see many who do not have this. But we also can see how quickly this can change, since sickness comes and we are unable to go in and out as usual. DEB VANDER WAAL - Thank you for a nice, long letter, Deb. There are some large farms also in Michigan, but in general farming is rather limited. We were glad that you liked the Youth Conference. It should be a learning process for us in the things of God’s Word.

HERMAN DEN HOLLANDER - Do you like snow, Herman? Snow is mentioned a number of times in the Bible. Can you think of some instances where it can be found? I think the temperatures in the Bible lands were somewhat milder than those we have. ELIZABETH VANDENBERG - Did your sister go to Nigeria already, Elizabeth? Give her our greetings, and we pray that the Lord will help her in this work and in all the difficulties she will no doubt encounter. The Lord is the Almighty God.

MICHAEL DE SMIT - We were glad to hear from you, Michael. Names on our list are always a month behind because of printing time. Did you find your name this time? Once a year we try to give a book to those who answer the Bible quizzes. So in time you may also receive one if you continue to answer the quizzes.

SHERYL DEN HOED - Your birthday is the same day as one of my daughters, Sheryl. We wish (even though you receive this too late) a happy birthday, and hope that you may have many more. We hope that you may also have a second birthday. Do you know what is meant by that? JOHN HEYSTEK - Thank you for your wishes, John. The Bible teaches us what true happiness is, and that happiness we are all in need of, also in this year. Give our regards to your parents and brother and all the other friends in Lynden.

TRUDY VANDER WAAL - We hope that you have received your book by this time, Trudy. There was considerable delay in getting them this year, which caused some problems. The quiz about the birth of Christ was not so difficult, but how necessary that we be given to see the great importance of that event. CARRIE BETH WITVOET - By the time you receive this issue, the end of the winter months will be rapidly approaching. Do you like the winter as well as spring and summer? In what city does your teacher’s father have a church?

JOHN WESDYK - How many different classes are there in your Sunday School, John? Do you also have catechism classes during the week? There is so much for boys and girls to learn when they are young, but we know that some of these things are more important than others.

DAVID VANDER WAAL - Your letter is the last one this time, David. How many cows do you have on your farm? Do you live far from the school? Some day, D.V., we hope to visit your school. Do you find the work more difficult than the school you were in last year?

Many thanks, boys and girls, for your answers to the quiz. We hope we may continue to learn in this year those things which are contained in God’s Word, and that they may serve to guide us in right ways. We look forward to receiving your replies again next month, D.V.

With love,

Your friend, “ Uncle Garret”

Exalt the Lord our God, and worship at His holy hill; for the Lord our God is holy. Psalm 99:9

MAKING CONFESSION AND THE OFFICES

In making confession we place ourselves under admonition and church discipline. Think of the keys of the kingdom of heaven. We may not proclaim abroad the secret sins of others. Read attentively Matthew 18. By virtue of the office of all believers we have the task to admonish each other and to give heed to others.

Rev. Smytegeldt said, “Men, seek to pull your wives from the fire, wives your husbands, and parents your children.” If your brother, after admonishing by you and after admonishing by others with you, will not hear you, tell it to the congregation, that is, to the consistory.

The key of the word must be used properly. Woe to the watchman who does not blow upon the trumpet of law and gospel. The Lord commanded Moses to make two trumpets of silver, which the priests were to blow. Woe to the watchman who does not separate the precious from the vile.

The second key is church discipline. This key is not judicial, but medical. This key is used for admonishing and for the application of censure. (See Matt. 18.) Censure progresses in three steps— the first step, silent censure by the consistory, the second step, public censure with classis approval, and the third step, which is excommunication. Young People may the Lord give you to walk according to God’s Word. Consider your “yes” answer, that it not be a lie.

Many withdraw their membership as soon as they are admonished after going astray in doctrine and life. Then they censure themselves; then they shut themselves outside the kingdom of heaven. I esteem it greatly when upon censure a change for the better results, especially as we have promised to submit to admonition and correction.

Let us admonish each other in love. Let us not speak good of sin, but hate it and flee from it. If we set our feet upon the inclined plane of open sin, we usually slide away rapidly. A run-away horse cannot easily be restrained. As a blind one it runs at great speed, paying no heed to anything. A similar thing takes place if a person gives in to his wicked and corrupted nature. We are all conceived and born in sin. The natural desire of our heart is sin. The fountain of our existence is completely corrupted. The active desires are streams from that fountain.

I will try to describe how sin reveals itself. It goes by degrees. First there is an evil thought which comes into the mind. It is as the rumbling of a volcano. Thereupon follows the lodging given unto it. We could compare this to showing hospitality to a robber who has planned our ruin. Then there is the pleasure found in it—the consideration of the evil, which with great persuasion reasons away our objections. Of course, then comes the consent which a person gives unto it. The desires are made active, the enjoyment is already tasted in advance, and the benefit for our flesh is seen. Then there follows the decision to perform the evil, although perhaps there is some deferment because of a speaking conscience or because of that which will result. But finally the evil comes with such power to the surface, that it is carried out. The trap is open and a person steps into it, but then the trap is sprung.

After the evil is carried out, there is activity to cover up the evil, or a person attempts to excuse himself. “They have sought out many inventions”.

Blessed are they who may have received a repentance by degrees. I am thinking of the parable of the prodigal son. First “he came to himself”. He saw the condition he was in. Then he spoke to himself. He saw the abundance which his father’s hired servants had, and himself, “I perish with hunger”. Then came his resolution, “I will arise and go to my father”. He considered what he would say. Then comes the deed, “and he arose, and came to his father”. Wonderful grace, wonderful mercy. No excuses, no cover up. His father saw him a great way off. His father “had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him”. He kissed his last words away, “make me as one of thy hired servants”. And the result? Again he might be at the table of his father, in communion with his father, fed and clothed by his father.

In Christ the salvation of the church lies firm, bestowed by grace. Through Christ the lost one returns to the Father and receives eternal life. “And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven”.

(Matthew 16:19)

PRAYING SOLDIERS

Queen Wilhelmina of Holland once paid a visit to an army unit in 1914. As these soldiers had to defend their country, the Queen believed that the strongest army would be a praying one. Therefore she asked some who were paraded before her, “Who of you can pray?” She did not ask, “Who of you can fight well?” or “Who is very brave?” Her question was, “Who of you can pray?”

All eyes were on the queen. They had not expected this question. They could fight, and gamble, and swear; but pray—! Most of them did not pray. They would be ashamed to be seen praying. And now their queen was asking who among them prayed.

The queen waited. At last eight lads were found who acknowledged that they prayed. They had learned to do so at home, and had continued to do so in the army amidst their worldly and careless companions. Some of the eight may have been taught by the Lord Himself to pray.

The queen spoke again, “Such soldiers are worth more than all the others,” she said. “Such soldiers can defend our country.” Then she asked that part of Psalm 79 be sung, and this was done.

Help us, God of our salvation, For the glory of Thy Name;

For Thy Name’s sake come and save us,

Take away our sin and shame.

-Young People’s Magazine

AMUSEMENT

Attending places of amusement tends to stifle serious reflection, and to cherish a vain and gay temper, and to promote an idle and sinful life. It tends to make young people forget that they are sinners, and that they must die and come to judgment. It tends to render them deaf to all inward warnings of God’s Spirit, and unheeding to the checks of conscience and the outward calls of the Gospel. Their ministers, parents, and friends counsel them in vain.
