CORSICA

The Lord, according to His sovereign will and divine providence, has graciously bestowed upon us the undeserved and blessed privilege of establishing another school of the Netherlands Reformed Congregations. What shall we render to the Lord for all His benefits to us!

The dedication of the Corsica Netherlands Reformed Christian School took place on October 26, 1981 in the Corsica church. The Rev. A. Vergunst, who at one time had served the Corsica congregation as its minister, led the dedication service. Before the service, an open house was held from 6:00-7:15 P.M. at the school, for the congregation, friends, and people of the community. At 7:30 P.M. Rev. Vergunst opened the service with a salutation and the congregation sang Psalter 49. He then read Psalm 72 and Mark 10:13-16, following with prayer, entreating the Lord for His blessing and care over the endeavors of the new school and also the schools of our denomination already established. After the prayer, Psalter 215 was sung and a collection was taken for the school.

Rev. Vergunst then spoke on the necessity of maintaining a “Netherlands Reformed Christian” school. The “Christian” school is a school where Christ and the Word of God has the central place. For the school to be “Reformed”, is to promote life as it is lived according to the Reformed belief and as it is expressed in the three confessional forms of unity (ie. Heidelberg Catechism, Belgic Confession, and Canons of Dordt). The term “Netherlands” teaches us that we feel ourselves related to the churches in the Netherlands which are with us in the ways of our fathers. We follow the tradition of “Reformed Pietism.” We are to adhere to that confessional theme Deo Vivere “to live for God”; a life which encompasses our personal, family and societal aspects. The program for our school is set for us by the “further Reformation” which compels us to know what the work of the Lord is in the hearts of His people. He then reminded us of our baptismal promises and obligations “to instruct” our children primarily in the home, and “help or cause them to be instructed” secondarily by means of the school and catechismal teaching, in the ways of the Lord, an endeavor which involves us all.

After the singing of Psalter 278, elder C. Blom addressed the congregation. He reflected upon the past events when the school was under construction and there were no teachers; and when the teachers came there was concern whether the building would be completed; but how the Lord doth provide when man does not see a way. He also expressed thanks on behalf of the consistory and school board to the carpenters, Corsica hardware, electricians, lumber yard and others responsible for the building, and also those of the congregation who contributed both financially and in labors.

Mr. R. De Ruiter, who is the acting-principal, then addressed the congregation expressing gratitude on behalf of the faculty to members of the congregation for all their support. He also spoke of God’s sovereignty and man’s total depravity, drawing illustrations from II Chronicles 29 concerning the building of the temple.

The service was concluded by all of the students singing several Psalters.

After the service, the congregation and visitors were invited to the school where refreshments were served.

May the Lord, Who has blessed us thus far in the provision for our school, continue to sustain the work of His hands that all may redound to His honor and to His glory.
