O Timothy keep that which is committed to thy trust. II Timothy 6:20

THE CONFESSION OF FAITH ARTICLE XXXVI OfMagistrates (continued)

We ended the first article about the magistrates in emphasizing that the government has a task in punishing sin and that murderers are to die according to God’s special commandment. It is not only the calling of the government to make certain that justice is maintained, but this article also speaks of another calling, one which is generally not so readily accepted. It reads, “And their office is, not only to have regard unto, and watch for the welfare of the civil state; but also that they protect the sacred ministry; and thus remove and prevent all idolatry and false worship; that the kingdom of anti-christ may be destroyed and the kingdom of Christ promoted.”

This is a stumbling block for many, and therefore the Christian Reformed Church removed this portion from the confession, thinking to be wiser than our fathers at Dort. Our fathers knew very well that the theocracy no longer existed, since this had come to an end at the destruction of Jerusalem. However, think of the God-fearing kings of Israel who protected true religion and were greatly blessed by the Lord; we can mention David, Asa, Hezekiah, and Josiah as among those who have shown their zeal for the service of the Lord. Remember also the fifth commandment, which is not only applicable to the relationships in the families, but can also be applied to the nations. When there is subjection to the government which rules according to God’s Word, the Lord promises His favor.

It is true that the national form of the covenant has come to an end; however, the covenant did not change, but is now the ecclesiastical form for the church. The form of Israel fell away, but the essence of the demand remained. The government has the duty to provide for the honor of God’s Name, His day and His service; everything which goes against this must be punished. Unbelief and false teachings are sins just as well as is stealing; they are even the greater sins, and therefore are listed as being the duty of the government to prevent them.

At the 177th session of the Synod of Dort the deputies asked the government not to give any public office to Roman Catholic priests. This was no persecution, since our fathers have always spoken out for the freedom of the conscience, but the honor of God and the welfare of the country made it a necessity for the government to act in such a way. Article 36 expresses what God’s Word requires of the government, but it is also applicable to each of us personally; true religion must be maintained, protected and restored when necessary.

We live at a time when the rights of man are of greater value than the rights of God’s Law; therefore there is no longer place given for that ‘intolerant article 36’, as it is sometimes called. Did this so-called freedom bring real happiness? No, the judgments of the Lord are multiplying, and the patience of the Lord with this rebellious world (government and church included) is coming to an end. The countries which depart from God’s institutions (and this is quite general) make themselves ripe for destruction.

The synod of the Christian Reformed Church in South Africa made a decision in 1949 that there was no reason to change this article and omit part of it. Let us not forget that the God-fearing kings of the Old Testament times were praised by the Lord when they destroyed the idols! We do not advocate that those who do not keep the Sabbath should be killed; no, the Lord Himself has given us the parable of the tares in the field. These tares were not to be rooted up immediately, but at harvest time, meaning at the end of the world. The confession points to the destruction of idols and false religions, but not to the persons themselves. It is the duty of the government to take care that the whole Law of God is kept; this means not only the second table of it, but also the first table.

This article not only speaks about the calling of the government, but also the calling of the subjects. We should obey them providing they do not go against God’s Word; if something is required contrary to the Word of God, we may refuse or protest in that matter, but must not be disobedient in everything, as is sometimes advocated. They say, “The government is not acting according to the law, and therefore we will no longer pay taxes”; this has nothing to do with the matter and is only self-love. It is expressly stated, “to pay tribute, to show due honor and respect to them, and to obey them in all things which are not repugnant to the Word of God.”

Should we not pray for our government, asking Him to give them wisdom to rule according to His will, but also to give us men who fear the Lord? The times are difficult, also for the government, and this makes it even more urgent that we pray for them. In visiting the congregations and families, we so seldom hear that there is prayer for our country and government, and this is a bad sign. When the Lord no longer gives prayer for country and government, it is to be feared that He is withdrawing Himself from such a country. May the Lord give a prayer to pray unto Him, for He is the only One Who can bring a change.

It cannot be denied that there are manifold sins in our days, perhaps as never before; this should bring us on our knees before the Lord to beg that He may cause us to return unto Him. We hope that the coming year, D.V., may become a year in which we need the Lord in all our ways. The Lord has promised, “In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.”

When we truly subject ourselves to the Lord, we will do the same to our parents and to the government, as these are placed over us by the Lord Himself. In speaking about the fifth commandment, Paul has pointed out that it is the first commandment with a promise. In the keeping of God’s commandment there is great reward.

BIBLE QUIZ

Dear Boys and Girls,

As we again start a new year with the Bible quiz, we should stop to think for a moment. In the months behind us, and for some it is a number of years, we have been busy each month answering the quiz. What have we learned by doing them? Perhaps we have learned to know our Bible better than we did before, so that we can more quickly find the answers. That is good! But have we learned to know the God of the Bible? The Lord Jesus said that the Scriptures speak of Him. And it is so important that we learn to know Him. As you do the quiz each month, may a prayer be in your heart, “Lord, as I study the Bible, show me Thyself. Teach me rightly to know Thee, the only True God.” If it pleases the Lord to teach us this, then the Bible will also be a new book for us. We wish this for each of you in the coming year.

And now to answer the letters which we have received—

SHERI VANDER WALL - Yes, the year does go by very fast, Sheri. How are you doing in school? We have not seen your school in Iowa, but do hope someday, D.V., to be able to see it. What subjects do you like the best? Or do you like them all?

PAMELA BETH SCHELLING -We also read about gleaning in the Bible, Pamela. Do you know of one example? Have you ever read the book, “Ears for Little Gleaners”? I remember receiving that book in Sunday school many years ago, and I still have it.

JANET KARDUX - We too have had a lot of rain, Janet. They say if it were in the form of snow, it would be very deep. The Lord rules, also in such things, for we read in His Word that He giveth both the rain and the snow. Tell your sisters “Happy Birthday”.

LEONA VANDEN BRINK -Some others also had trouble finding the name of the king who sought not the Lord in his sickness, but sought to the physicians, Leona. It is written in the Bible for an example to us. When we are sick, to whom do we look first?

PHILIP SCHOUTEN-How far from your house was the bush fire, Philip? Fire can do much damage in a very short time. We read about fire quite often in our Bibles. Can you think of some of the events in which fire is spoken of? Give our greetings to your father.

SUSAN KRANENDONK - The text I wrote you about is found in Isaiah 1:3, Susan. It speaks about us as a church and as a people. We have relatives in the Netherlands. Do you have relatives there too? Letters from those who live far away help keep the mailmen busy.

BOBBY HULTS, JR. - How many kinds of fish do you have in your tank, Bobby? It is surprising how many kinds there are, some very tiny and some very large ones. Do you know on what day of creation that the Lord created the fish? Do write again.

KAREN VANDEN BEUKEL-You have learned much from the Bible quiz, Karen. We hope that you may remember these lessons for a long, long time. It is true that we so quickly forget the good things which we learn. The poet in psalter 322 said, “Thy word shall be my chief delight, and I will not forget Thy law.”

KAREN WESDYK - The story of Joseph has many good lessons in it for boys and girls, Karen. Your teacher has probably told you about them. What do you think we should learn from the story of his life? Sometimes we hear about a greater Joseph. Do you know who that is?

DEBBIE WITVOET-Do you live far from your school, Debbie? There is so much to learn while we are young, but it is also true that we never stop learning. I am sure your grandfather will agree with that. How are you doing in school this year?

SUSY-ANN JANNA ECKHARDT-If you lived closer to Kalamazoo, you could bring me a sample of your baking, Susy. We were glad to hear that the questions are becoming easier for you. That is a sign that you are learning something every time you do the quiz and remember it for the next time.

ESTELLA SCHOUTEN - How is your father now, Estella? Is he able to work every day? Sometimes the troubles in our lives can be very many. But the Lord has said, “Call upon Me in the day of trouble?” Do you know what follows these words in the text?

LOUISE VANDEN BRINK-I was going to have a book selection this month, Louise, but I have postponed it until next month. It is possible that we miss a name sometime. Usually those who write a letter receive a reply. Do you like to write letters?

ROSEMARY KARDUX - We are doing quite well, Rosemary. Thank you for the card. The sun is also shining here at the moment, and it is much warmer than usual for this time of the year. But the weather can change very quickly, as we see so often.

FRANCINA SLINGERLAND -What are you studying about at school at present, Francina? Are the lessons more difficult this year than they were last year? Report cards will probably be out soon again, and then you will know how well you are doing.

ANITA SCHOUTEN-Many people speak about chance, Anita, but God’s Word shows us plainly that all things are under His control. When we read in Acts 27 that the winds were contrary, they were contrary to the will of man, but not to the will of God.

JOHN WESDYK - Perhaps someday, D.V., you could make a report on trains in one of your classes at school, John. We once visited a museum which showed the history of trains, and it was quite interesting. How many others do you find in the Bible with the name of John?

PETER ECKHARDT-We are glad to hear that boys and girls like to receive the Banner of Truth every month, Peter. Did you know that the name “Banner of Truth” was based on a text from the Bible? If you look carefully, you might find it.

CARRIE WITVOET-The answers are easy if you have already learned them in school, Carrie. Perhaps sometimes it is just the opposite—you know an answer in school because you have learned it from the Bible quiz. Was the quiz difficult this time?

ANNETTE BRINK - How much snow do you have now, Annette? Even though the snow doesn’t come so early, we can be quite certain that winter weather will bring the snow. How are your grandparents? Be sure to give them our greetings.

JOHN ECKHARDT - Thank you for the pictures, John. When we see boys and girls in some of the churches or schools, we wonder if we should know them. The problem is that boys and girls change so fast as they grow a year older. How are you coming with learning your Dutch?

RONALD KRANENDONK-Your letter is the last one this time, Ronald. Have you been able to ice skate much this winter? Or are you so busy with school work that you don’t have time? I wouldn’t think that school work would make you that busy.

Thank you, boys and girls, for your answers again, and also for your wishes for Christmas and the coming year. We hope and pray that we may be spared together so that we may meet each month in this way, and that the Lord may give His blessing in your hearts by means of His Word.

With love,

Your friend,

“Uncle Garret”

A NEW YEAR THOUGHT

Another year is past! How faithful is God to His promises! He is abundant in goodness and truth. He hath preserved me one year more, like the three young men in the fiery furnace. Lord, what shall I render to Thee for all Thy benefits? What progress have I made, during the past year, in the divine life? Any at all? Are my corruptions weaker, and the graces of the Spirit grown stronger within me? I hope I can say, that in general the power of my corruptions is in some degree weakened; though at particular seasons the enemy makes most terrible inroads and threatens my utter destruction. This calls for continual watchfulness and prayer. I am never safe, but when I live near to God, and depend by faith on Him alone for safety.

Am I pleased and satisfied with my Master and His service? I can truly answer, I am: nor would I change either the one or the other for millions of worlds. I see nothing here worth living for, but the service of God. My heart, unless it deceives me, desires supremely and continually no other glory, honour, or happiness, than what is to be found in God’s service. He is a good Master. I love His service. Lord, nail mine ear to the door of Thine house for ever. O that I could love Thee more and serve Thee better! I am slothful. I am negligent. But the Lord hath hitherto borne with me. Give me the honour and privilege of serving Thee and living with Thee for ever. Enable me this year to double my diligence, and to press more earnestly after holiness; and to live more wholly to Thy glory! Amen.

Rev. Thomas Charles of Bala

NEW YEAR

While with ceaseless course the sun Hasted through the former year, Many souls their race have run, Never more to meet us here: Fixed in an eternal state, They have done with all below; We a little longer wait, But how little—none can know.

As the winged arrow flies, Speedily the mark to find; As the lightning, from the skies, Darts and leaves no trace behind: Swiftly thus our fleeting days Bear us down life’s rapid stream; Upwards, Lord, our spirits raise, All below is but a dream.

Thanks for mercies past receive, Pardon of our sins renew; Teach us, henceforth, how to live, Wtih eternity in view: Bless Thy Word to young and old, Fill us with a Saviour’s love; And when life’s short tale is told, May we dwell with Thee above.

IN THE CHURCH

In the Church, be careful to serve God; for thou art in His eyes, and not in man’s. JohnBunyan

WITH GOD ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE

A certain poor woman was converted under the teaching of a missionary, and this brought a very great change in her life. Her husband was a common laborer, and prior to this time they had lived very happily together. However, the husband now became a bitter persecutor, treating his wife very harshly because of her beliefs. Because she would not give up the service of God, he would often put her out of doors at night, even during the winter season. Not wanting the neighbors to see his cruelty to her, she went out into the fields, there to cry unto the Lord in fervent prayer. “Cold winter and the midnight air, witnessed the fervour of her prayer.”

She was greatly distressed, but did not despair. Her only encouragement was that with God all things are possible. She therefore resolved to set apart one hour every day to pray for the conversion of her persecuting husband. This she did, without missing one day for a whole year, but there was no change. She resolved to continue six months longer in these daily prayers, which she did to the last day. When she retired at about twelve o’clock on that last day as usual, she thought it would be for the last time. Fearing that her wishes in this matter might be contrary to the will of God, she resolved to call no more upon Him for this; since her desire had not been granted, her hope appeared to be cut off.

The same day her husband came home from his work appearing deeply dejected. Instead of sitting down as usual to his dinner, he went directly upstairs to his room. His wife followed and listened, and to her grateful astonishment, “he who used to mock, returned to pray.” He came downstairs, but refused to eat, and returned to his work until the evening.

When he came home, his wife affectionately asked him, “What is the matter?”

“Matter enough,” he replied; “I am a lost sinner. About twelve o’clock I was at my work, and a text of Scripture came into my mind which I could not get rid of, and I am lost.”

His wife encouraged him to pray, but he said, “O wife, it is of no use; there is no forgiveness for me!” Filled with remorse as he thought of his past conduct, especially to his dear wife, he said, “Will you forgive me?”

‘‘ O yes!’’ she replied.

“Will you pray for me?”

“O yes, that I will.”

“Will you pray for me now?”

“That I will with all my heart.”

They at once fell on their knees, and wept, and made supplications before the Lord. His tears of penitence mingled with her tears of gratitude and joy. The house had now truly become a house of prayer.

SINS

No sin against God can be little, because it is against the great God of heaven and earth; but if the sinner can find out a little God, it may be easy to find out little sins.
