O Timothy keep that which is committed to thy trust. II Timothy 6:20
THE CONFESSION OF FAITH ARTICLE XXXVII (continued)
Of the Last Judgment
This last article of our confession speaks of the last day of the world—the day of judgment. It means that death is not the end of man, and this was also shown as the expectation of Job when he said, “For I know that my Redeemer liveth, and that He shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God.”
In other places of God’s Word we find that same expectation, but the Lord Jesus especially made this clear when He emphasized that His children should not fear them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul. They must fear God, Who can destroy both soul and body. After the judgment soul and body will go to their eternal destination; “for all the dead shall be raised out of the earth, and their souls joined and united with their proper bodies, in which they formerly lived.” The same body and the same spirit will be united. God’s justice requires that the same body which sinned against Him will also be punished; otherwise God would not do justice to that man. It must also be the same body of God’s people, since Christ merited salvation for His church and it is personally applied; it is therefore necessary that the same body which He had purchased becomes partakers of His glory.
Some think that there will only be men then, and no women, and they base this upon Ephesians 4:13, “Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ.” We do not agree with this, on the basis of what God’s Word says in Matthew 22:30, “For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.” The Lord does not say that women will not exist, but that they will not be given in marriage.
The bodies which are raised, or are still alive at that time, will not need food any longer. “As for those who shall then be living, they shall not die as the others, but be changed in the twinkling of an eye, and from corruptible, become incorruptible.” Christ will judge the quick and the dead, which for God’s children will lead to eternal glory, but for the wicked will lead to eternal damnation. “Then the books shall be opened, that is to say the conscience.” When Christ shall come to judge, all the inhabitants of the world shall see Him. What an impressive moment that will be; it is the day of reckoning.
When Christ came in the fulness of time and assumed our human nature, He was rejected, mocked, condemned and killed. God’s justice now requires that Christ be restored in glory before all mankind as the true Son of God. The unbelievers will experience the terrible sin which they committed in rejecting the Son, Who was the only way of salvation; outside of Jesus no deliverance is possible. He will also deliver His people who have sighed under the persecutions of the enemy, those who have often wept and suffered because of oppression for the Name and sake of the Lord. God’s people should not be too depressed, because the Lord promises that it is only for ten days, and then He, as the faithful Head of the covenant, will restore them before the eyes of the world. This is My people!
The books will be opened; this is our conscience. Some think it will take a very long time to judge all the inhabitants of the world, but when the Lord opens the conscience, they will in a moment see their whole life which was spent either in the service of Satan, or, by the grace of God, in the service of the Lord. All men must give an account of their thoughts, words and actions, and therefore the judgment will be terrible and dreadful to the wicked and ungodly. They shall become immortal, but only in order to be tormented in everlasting fire, which is prepared for the devil and his angels.
This judgment will be according to the law which has been given to us and which is read every Sunday morning in church. The wicked and hypocrites will then pray to the mountains and to the hills to cover them before the Lord, but that will not be possible. With a curse in their heart they will have to confess, “God is just. I am guilty and worthy of death. Now it is too late for ever.” Before then they were mocking with God’s love and grace—but now salvation has become impossible. The words ‘too late’ will be terrible for all those who have not served the Lord in truth and uprightness.
This judgment will be terrible for the wicked, but most desirable and comfortable for the righteous and elect. They will receive the reward which the Lord has promised to the faithful servants, even though they have found themselves so unfaithful time and again. Are then the good works the ground of salvation? No, not at all; but as the fruit of faith, a good tree must bring forth good fruit. It is the fruit of God’s own work in the hearts of His children. They may enter into eternal glory out of free grace. They are also sinners, but the Lord does no injustice, because Christ has given perfect satisfaction to God’s justice. He has been obedient to the law and has also suffered the punishment for the trespassing of the law for His church, which He received from the Father as wages upon His labor.
“The faithful and elect shall be crowned with glory and honor; and the Son of God will confess their names before God His Father and His elect angels; all tears shall be wiped from then-eyes.”
At the end of this article it can be seen so clearly that the confession was written in the days of persecution, in days when it was so difficult to confess the Name of the Lord. How different it is today; we live in free countries. We do not hope that persecutions will return; generally, however, they are the most fruitful times for the church. We do not know what the future will bring us, but we hope, young people, that the Lord may prepare us to meet him. We do not know whether Christ will come in this century, but many of us will die in this age, and then the world will come to an end for us. Ask the Lord that He gives us an impression of the shortness of our lives and that we may learn to count our days.
We have now come to the end of this series of articles about our confession. It is an old confession, but not old-fashioned. We hope and pray that the Lord has used or will yet use these explanations to the glory of His Name, and that among our young people a desire may be born to serve Him as the highest good.

BIBLE QUIZ
Dear Boys and Girls,
The crossword puzzle this month is about kings of Israel and Judah. The position of king was an important one in those countries, and it still is today where they have that type of government. I recall children playing on a mound of dirt, with one standing at the very top, saying, “I am king of the hill.” Others would try to push him down, and sometimes this would happen, so that another would take his place. To be at the top—much effort was made to come there and to stay there.
We see this also in the kings of countries. A king is above all others, but sometimes it was only for a short time that he ruled. But the Bible speaks to us about the King of kings. All kings, when compared to Him, are as nothing. He is an eternal King, and must receive all honor and praise. It is true, while He was on earth, His high position was hidden at times. It was a time of humiliation for Him when He lived, suffered and died, but even at His death there was a sign placed on the cross in three languages, reading, “The King of the Jews”. And He delivers and defends His people from the mighty forces of Satan, sin and the world. It is so necessary that He also be our King. Ask the Lord to give Him that place in your heart, in your home, and in your life.

And now to answer the letters
which we have again received—
BOBBY HULTS, JR. - Did you miss some school because of the snow, Bobby? We haven’t had much snow at all this winter. Do your fish get along alright with each other? Have you ever studied about fish in your class at school? The ocean also has many different kinds of fish.
JANET KARDUX - Is everyone feeling better again, Janet? There has been quite a lot of sickness this winter. Did you have to miss some days of school? I haven’t seen any flowers blooming as yet, but with more nice weather like we have been having, it will not be too long any more.
ESTELLA SCHOUTEN - It is a great blessing if we may have Jacob’s God for our help, Estella. Can you think of times in the life of Jacob when the Lord was his help in a special way? There is nothing thai is impossible for Him, and therefore we can call upon Him in all our needs.
JOEL ARNOLDUSSEN - It was nice to hear from you, Joel. Were the questions quite easy this month? How are you doing in school? I suppose you like some things in school better than others. Or do you think that school is perfect in every respect?
LENA NEELS-Thank you for the new year wishes, Lena. We hope that it may also bring many blessings for you and your family. We had heard that you were having much rain. The Lord gives rain and also withholds rain, and
who shall then say, “What doest Thou?”
LEONA VANDEN BRINK-From the quiz we can see that there are many animals mentioned in the Bible, Leona. And they were all created by the Lord “after their kind”. Some might say that all the different kinds were not necessary, but the Lord made no mistakes.
KAREN VANDEN BEUKEL-Where is the school located, Karen? Is it near the church? We were glad to hear that you were also starting with a school in St. Catharines. It is difficult to return to the public school after having attended a Christian school.
REINEKE MAY BERTRAM -How many teachers do you now have at school, Reineke? We saw a picture of your school in the school directory, and it certainly looks like you have a nice building for it. Does Mr. Van de Biezen have any problem with the language?
TIMOTHY VAN GROUW - Yes, Timothy, the deer don’t always stop, look and listen before crossing the street. Boys and girls sometimes forget to do so, but the deer don’t know any better. Does your brother have a large farm? Even if it is small, I’m sure you like to visit there.
SUSAN KRANENDONK-I do not have any grandparents living, Susan, but do have some uncles and aunts—some here and some in Holland. Have you ever made a trip to Holland? We have been there several times, and would like to make that trip again some day, D.V.
KIMBERLY STELSEL - It was nice to hear from you, Kimberly. There seems to be quite a few letters this month. When do you have your catechism classes? Do you also learn some questions and answers? Do you always tell your parents about your lesson when you come home from catechism?
HILDA VANDEN HOEK -Would you like to be a nurse some day, Hilda? It is a very nice occupation, but I am sure there are some that do not care for it. Is it a large hospital that you help in after school? Being in a hospital for a short time makes us realize what a blessing it is to have good health.
KAREN WESDYK-That must have been a special day when you moved into the new school building, Karen. The Lord alone is to receive the honor, since He has made it possible for you to have it. Without His blessing, all our plans will never be realized. DEBBIE WITVOET-We were glad to hear that your surgery had turned out so well, Debbie. Are you being real careful in the things you do until it has completely healed? In such things we also need the Lord’s blessing, since the doctors can do nothing without His help.
MARC DE VISSER - Marc, you asked why Job is placed in the Bible just before Psalms, especially since he lived much earlier. I think Job is one of the poetic books, just as Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Song of Solomon. You will notice that they are all grouped together after the historical books.
ANTHONY VANDEN HOEK-Is there a college near you which teaches agriculture, Anthony? Does the lack of snow this winter cause a problem for the farmers? We are dependent upon the Lord in our studies and in our work, but also in the moisture for growing the crops in the field. We sometimes forget this.
PHILIP SCHOUTEN - In speaking about fire as mentioned in the Bible, there is also the time when fire came down from heaven upon the prayer of Elijah on Mount Carmel. Can you think of another time when fire came down from heaven at the request of Elijah?
ELAINE DE KOK - We are very glad to have you join in answering the quizzes, Elaine. Do you live on a large farm? It has not been as cold this winter as it has sometimes been. Older people usually don’t care to have a lot of snow and cold, but I don’t think boys and girls mind too much if it’s cold.
MICHAEL DE SMIT - Our congratulations to your grandparents on their anniversary, Michael. We hope that they may have many more together. Do they live near you? If you ask them, I am sure they will say that those years have gone very quickly.
JULIE KRANENDONK - So far the boys and girls haven’t had to stay home here in Kalamazoo on account of snow, Julie, But they did have one day of icy roads, so that the schools were closed. Last year it was much different. Do you study foreign countries at school?
LOUISE BRINK - How was your report card, Louise? Boys and girls don’t get report cards in catechism class, but perhaps it would be a good idea. Or don’t you think so? Were there any difficult ones in the quiz this month? I’m sure they are not all easy ones.
ERIKA VANDEN BEUKEL-We are quite well, Erika. Your answers were written very neatly. It is surprising how much easier it is to find the answers after you have been doing the quiz for a period of time. But even I have trouble sometimes in finding an answer I am looking for.
KRISTINA MARIE DEVRIES -There are quite a few different birds and animals, aren’t there, Kristina? Do you have quite a few birds that you recognize when you see them? Some can also tell a bird by its song, since each kind of bird has a different song. ANITA SCHOUTEN - There are many changes which take place in our daily lives, Anita, and each of them brings new difficulties, new temptations, new experiences. How necessary for us to pray with the psalmist, “Teach me, O Lord, the way that I should go.”
JOHN WESDYK - It sounds as if you have a very nice school building, John. We hope that someday we may be able to pay you a visit there, the Lord willing. Was it quite a lot of work getting everybody and every thing moved from the one building to the other?
ELIZABETH VANDENBERG -I am sure you are looking forward to have Janette home again and to hear all about Nigeria. No doubt she is also anxious to be home again. How long has she been there now? Do you think you would like to work in the mission field?
AMY VANDE VREDE - Do you like to work in the greenhouse, Amy? We cannot understand how plants grow from the little seeds which are put into the dirt, but that too is a wonder of the Lord. We can plant and water, but the Lord must give the increase. RICKY DE KOK - You letter is the last one for this time, Ricky. We welcome you since it is the first time you answered, and we hope we will hear from you every month. What part of the Old Testament are you studying about? There is much to learn and remember.
Again our thanks, boys and girls, for your answers to the quiz. May we learn together those important truths of God’s Word, which are able to make us wise unto salvation. We look forward to hearing from all of you again next month, D.V.
With love,
Your friend,
“Uncle Garret”
WHICH WAY DO YOU GO?
As we travel through this world, there are many times that we arrive at a fork in the road and we must decide which road should be followed. If one is right and one is wrong, how important it is to turn the right way. A minister once spoke of this in his sermon, using an illustration to make it clear. He told of watching a dog following two boys. Because they were walking together, it was not possible to tell to which of the two boys the dog belonged. However, they soon came to a fork in the road and the one boy went one way and the second boy went the other way. Then it was soon evident who the dog’s master was, for the dog followed his master.
The minister then explained how there are times when religion and the world travel along the same way, and it is difficult to tell whom we are following, God or the world. But there are many forks in the road, and God by His Word calls us one way and the world calls us another way. Then which way do we go? Do we let the world go, and follow God’s laws? Or is the world our master, so that we follow the world and the lusts thereof, and let God and conscience and religion go?
We need think only of a Joseph, a Moses, of Daniel and his friends. They, too, came to such a fork in the road in their lives. Do you follow their example?
“I went to God’s temple; my doubts were dispelled, The end of life’s journey I
clearly beheld;
I saw in what peril ungodly men stand With sudden destruction and ruin at hand.” Submitted
Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice. Ps. 55:17
