O Timothy keep that which is committed to thy trust. II Timothy 6:20

GOD’S WATCHFUL GUIDANCE FOR HIS CHURCH

IV

Some people say: Isn’t the Bible sufficient for you to preach from in church? Is it necessary to teach the Catechism in our schools?

We know that the Word of God is the rich fountain from which all faithful ministers preach the Gospel to the congregations. And it is necessary in our dark times that our school-teachers, in an earnest way, tell the children Bible stories, pointing out that they must be born again.

But the Heidelberg Catechism is a short summary of the doctrine taught to us in the Holy Scriptures.

We may never place this book above the Bible. We must never place this book besides the Bible. We have to acknowledge this book as the source of true education for us and our children, taken from the Bible.

The whole Truth of God must be preached to us always. Yes, the Lord has given, that in all the questions and answers, the composers of this book gives a clear insight in the doctrine of salvation, yes, in everything that must be learned for time and eternity. It teaches us the ungodliness of our lives, but also about the redemption of our souls out of our great misery.

In short: The Catechism speaks to the simple man and woman, to the boy and girl, to the child of dust who finds himself bewildered by the severe trials and problems of this world.

The title proclaims the book as teaching the true Christian doctrine. It is the Christian doctrine which was taught in the church of the Reformation.

The reformed doctrine is the doctrine of sin and grace; of our deep fall in Adam and redemption through Christ alone.

A minister of former times once said: I think if Calvin would come back today, he would look with much surprise at many people who call themselves Calvinists. Many people bear the name, but refuse to follow his teaching of grace alone!

The church lives in a time of much fighting against the truth of God. The life-and-death struggle of our times is not one between various, more or less accurate, interpretations of Christianity. It is a contest that cuts far deeper, namely, a fight against the most essential principles of the Christian religion.

Therefore, let the church, also our church, stand by this heritage of our fathers, and preach the Catechism time and again. And may God give us grace to listen!

The Catechism contains one hundred and twenty nine questions and answers, in which are set forth in brief the whole contents of the Christian faith from the Reformed viewpoint.

It is introduced with a question concerning the only comfort in life and death. Then follow the three parts about the knowledge of our sin and misery, the saving faith through Christ Jesus, and then about the true conversion of man, followed by questions and answers regarding the Law of God as a guide for the Christian’s walk, the subject of prayer in general, and of the contents of the Lord’s prayer in particular.

And let us understand that the Catechism is the most widely known of all Reformed symbols. It is rich in contents, beautifully simple in form, highly spiritual in tone and character. We may say that this heritage of our fathers is a great blessing given by God for the right education of His church on earth.

It is my heartfelt wish and prayer that the King of His dearly bought church, Jesus Christ, may richly bless the teaching of the Catechism in our midst in church and school. May it be to the honor of God’s thrice holy Name, to the true and eternal salvation and wellbeing of many souls, and to the instruction and edification of our congregations. May it also lead to a closer examination of, further instruction in, and confirmation of the old and proven truth also for the rising generation and the generations to come.

Whereas on every side the truth is being denied and undermined, may the old doctrine of truth remain in our midst, namely, the doctrine which glorifies God in all His doings; the doctrine which glorifies the one-sided work of God in Christ through the operation of the Holy Spirit; the doctrine which glorifies Christ as the Son of the living God, as the Surety and Head of the Covenant of Grace, and as the only Name given under heaven unto salvation. Oh, may the Lord give all of us a right understanding for the prosperity of our souls.

Young and old, we go to eternity. And the truth in your mind is not enough, but the truth must be given in your hearts.

Oh, to learn in the way of free grace those three parts: Misery, deliverance, and thankfulness; it would be to your eternal preservation.

When in distress about your soul, ask the Lord for the light of heaven and for the help and support of Him, Who is, and Who was, and Who is to come.

It would be to the glory of God and the salvation of your poor soul, and know, dear reader, the way of God is the only good way. Our own ways lead to death, but the way of God, if we may learn to walk in it, brings us one day in heaven, where the King of His Church is at the right hand of His Father.

Children of God, may the Lord give right understanding of this text-book. May He teach you therein to seek your righteousness in Christ Jesus. He Himself is the great Prophet, the best teacher we can ever have. To learn more from and about Him and His benefits also means to know more about His peace. In heaven there is no more need for a Catechism, and there is no more need for ministers. There the King of His Church will forever be the central point of their life. Therefore the redeemed of the Lord shall return, and come with singing unto Zion; and everlasting joy shall be upon their heads: they shall obtain gladness and joy, and sorrow and mourning shall flee away.

But did you ever stop to think that every text of the Bible is given to teach us. We cannot turn a single page and say that it has no purpose and no meaning for us. It is true that some parts are not as clear to us as some others, but then our prayer must be with the psalmist, “Lord, open Thou mine eyes that I may behold wondrous things out of Thy law.” The Lord can

And now to answer the letters which we have again received:

LENA NEELS - We are quite well, Lena. Yes, time passes on so rapidly, and we do not know what the next day, the next week, or the next month will bring upon us. But our prayer should be every day, “Prepare me, gracious God, to stand before Thy face.” REINEKE BERTRAM - Elsewhere in the Bible the brazen serpent is also mentioned. Do you know where that is, Reineke? What was your natural history project? Give our greetings to your parents and our thanks for the calender.

JOHN LEE FLUIT - We were surprised to hear that you were moving, John. It is always an adjustment to move, since you must leave many friends and familiar things behind. I hope to hear from you how you like it in South Dakota.

HILDA VANDENHOEK - Not only do we have quite a bit of snow, Hilda, but at the moment the temperature is about zero. The wind chill makes it even worse, and it seems it is quite general throughout the country. In one of the Psalms we read, “Who can stand before His cold?” How true this is.

NICOLE ARNOLDUSSEN - I think your sister also wanted to help with the Bible quiz, Nicole. The Lord Jesus spoke about the need to become as little children. Perhaps your grandfather can explain this to you, since it is such a great blessing if we may come there.

ADRIENNE MYNDERS - Thank you for your new year wishes, Adrienne. May the Lord give us real happiness. Do you know what that would be? There are many people who think that great riches would make them happy, but what do you think?

ELAINE DEKOK - How is your hamster doing, Elaine? Even the little animals can teach us some lessons if we watch them closely. What have you learned from your hamster? You will find that there was more than one in the Bible of whom we read that he walked with God.

PATRICIA VANDENHOEK -We were glad to have you join in answering the quizzes, Patricia. Some months the number who answer the quiz is up and some times the list is shorter, but we are always glad to see new names appear. Did you find it easy this time?

JOHN SCHELLING - We hope you may have a happy birthday, John, and also many more of them. When you receive this issue of the Banner of Truth the signs of spring will not be far away. Do you like winter best? Do write again.

RONALD BERTRAM - Do you hope to play the organ in church some day, Ronald? To be much in the house of God should be our desire. Do you remember what task the psalmist preferred rather than to dwell in the tents of wickedness? Perhaps you can find the psalm.

DEBBIE WITVOET - Did your raccoon ever return, Debbie? Perhaps he will hibernate for the winter and return in the spring. Or don’t raccoons hibernate? When we consider the instincts and characteristics of animals, then we must confess that they too are “wonderfully made”.

CHRISTINE MYNDERS - I heard about the letter which you had sent, Christine. We are happy that we may again have a minister in Kalamazoo, and hope that you may have one also in your congregation. The Lord Jesus said, “Pray ye the Lord of the harvest”. Do you know who that is?

JOEL ARNOLDUSSEN - It is good to remember, Joel, that we go to school to learn. I think there are some boys and girls who forget this at times. When they are older, they perhaps wish they had studied just a little harder. Have you had report cards recently? ESTELLA SCHOUTEN - We are wondering whether your father had his operation already, Estella. We hope everything has gone (or may go) well. In all operations the Lord must give wisdom to the doctors and a blessing upon the means used if it is to go well. CARRIE WITVOET - The weather has been very cold, Carrie, but today it was rather mild, with sunny skies. It will take quite a lot of sunshine to make all the snow disappear. Are you doing quite well in school this year? You didn’t mention it in your letter.

JANET KARDUX - My question was too soon, Janet. Perhaps I should ask whether you are hoping it will be a boy or a girl — or doesn’t it matter? We do not have a choice, but sometimes we do have a desire for one or the other.

PHILIP SCHOUTEN - Yes, Philip, to love our neighbor when he treats us well is quite easy, but it is much more difficult to do so when our neighbors are unfriendly and troublesome. But the Bible’s instruction is the same for both. Can we ever do so in a right way?

GORDON ECKHARDT - We are glad to have you join in answering the Bible quiz, Gordon, and hope you will try to do so every month. Do you like this winter weather? I think most of us who are older are glad to see the snow and cold give way to spring.

LEONA VANDENBRINK - Congratulations, Leona. The first grandchild usually gets lots of attention from the whole family, so I don’t think it will be any different for Heather. Our congratulations also to the parents. May they be given the wisdom needed for such a responsibility.

JEFF BISSCHOP - The questions are not all easy ones, Jeff, but we are glad to see that lots of boys and girls work hard to answer them. Do you like the crossword puzzle? Either way the answer has to be found, and we always hope that the things learned may be kept in mind.

ANITA SCHOUTEN - What kind of fruits are there in New Zealand, Anita? It is too bad there are so many miles between us; otherwise I certainly would like to visit your country once. How many miles are you from the sea? I should probably get out a map and study it rather than to ask.

SUSY-ANNE JANNA ECKHARDT - That seems like a long name. Do they call you Susy? Or Susy-Anne? Yes, at New Year’s Day, when we change our calenders, thought should be given to the shortness of life, but also to the place where it leads us. Many, many people give it no thought at all.

LOUISE BRINK - How is your grandfather, Louise? Give him our greetings. Although he must be lonesome without your grandmother, we hope that the Lord may be near to him. Is school going quite well? It must be time for report cards soon. YVONNE BISSCHOP - The word “school” is found in Acts 19, Yvonne, and the word “schoolmaster” is found twice in Galatians 3. That of course doesn’t mean that children in those days didn’t have to learn. They had to study just as you do, but it appears that they were usually taught at home.

MICHELLE VANBRUGGE - It was nice to receive your note, Michelle. Newly fallen snow can be very pretty, especially when the sun shines upon it. In the Bible we read about something “whiter than snow”. Do you know what it is?

Many thanks, boys and girls, for your replies to the quiz. God’s Word should be in our hands every day, but when you do the quiz, I am sure it is not just for five or ten minutes. May you find it to be a “perfect companion” all your days.

With love,

Your friend,

“Uncle Garret”

THE VOICE OF TRUTH

Oft in vain the voice of truth
Solemnly and loudly warns;
Thoughtless, unexperienc’d youth,
Though it hears, the warning scorns:

Youth in fancy’s glass surveys
Life prolong’d to distant years,
While the vast imagin’d space
Fill’d with sweets and joys appears.

Awful disappointment soon
Overclouds the prospect gay;
Some their sun goes down at noon,
Torn by death’s strong hand away:

Where are then their pleasing schemes?
Where the joys they hop’d to find?
Gone for ever, like their dreams,
Leaving not a trace behind.

Call’d again, at length beware,
Hear the Saviour’s voice and live;
Lest He in His wrath should swear,
He no more will warning give:
Pray that you may hear and feel,
Ere the day of grace be past;
Lest your hearts grow hard as steel,
Or this year should prove your last.

THE GOSPEL NET

When Peter, through the tedious night,
Had often cast his net in vain;
Soon as the Lord appear’d in sight,
He gladly let it down again.

Once more the Gospel net we cast,
Do thou, O Lord, the effort own;
We learn, from disappointments past,
To rest our hope on Thee alone.

Have mercy on our num’rous youth,
Who, young in years, are old in sin;
And by Thy Spirit, and Thy truth,
Show them the state their souls are in.

Then by a Saviour’s dying love,
To ev’ry wounded heart reveal’d,
Temptations, fears, and guilt remove,
And be their Sun, and Strength, and Shield.

To mourners speak a cheering word,
On seeking souls vouchsafe to shine;
Let poor backsliders be restor’d,
And all Thy saints in praises join.
O hear our pray’r, and give us hope,
That when Thy voice shall call us home,
Thou still wilt raise a people up,
To love and praise Thee in our room.

A GOOD LESSON

Two young boys once went to visit an old converted man and asked him, “What must we do to overcome our bad habits and desires?”

In answer, the old man asked one of the boys to pull a little oak tree out of the ground. The one boy tried; he pulled and pulled, and finally he got it out of the ground. What deep roots this little tree already had!

Then the old man said, pointing to a small oak tree about the height of a man, “Now try to pull out this one.” The two boys pulled and pulled, but could not extract this bigger tree. Finally they stood silently looking at this tree, wondering what the old man meant by this.

The old man said, “Do you boys understand this lesson? When you notice that strange, wrong, bad habits and desires threaten you, you must immediately strive against them with all your might before they have a chance to take deep roots in your lives. If you do not do so soon enough, then, just like the little oak tree which had such deep roots, you cannot pull them out anymore. After a time, it will become impossible to overcome your bad habits and desires. Keep this in your mind, and never forget this lesson.” (Religious Stories for Young and Old — Volume IV.)

WEARY

Thou callest burdened souls to Thee,
And such, O Lord, am I.
Marks of grace I cannot show,
All polluted is my breast —
Yet I weary am, I know,
And the weary long for rest.
