O Timothy keep that which is committed to thy trust. I Timothy 6:20

SATAN’S TRICKS — IV

I hope that we not only may fear for drunkenness and use of drugs, but for all sin and crime against the holy and righteous God. It should bring us on our knees before the countenance of the Holy One, Who cannot have communion with sin and sinners. The prophet Habakkuk wrote: “Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil!”

To close this series of articles we would like to write something about Amnon, the godless son of David, and about Solomon, who was a child of God, but listened sometimes to the voice of the devil.

Amnon was a son of David; Absalom was his half brother. One day when he was in the palace he saw the beautiful Tamar, his half sister, passing by. He conceived a guilty passion for Tamar. He has a bad friend. Alas! How many have stained their souls and gone down to ruin because they had a friend, but the wrong kind of friend.

David had a friend, but that friend was the godfearing Jona-thon. Peter had a friend, but that friend was John the beloved. Paul had a friend, but that friend was Luke the beloved.

Amnon also had a friend, but he was the wrong kind of friend. It was he who suggested to him the way in which he could accomplish his evil desire. When the evil thing had been done, (he being stronger than she, forced her), he hated Tamar as fiercely as he had greatly loved her before. Despite her pleas he turned her out into the street. Absalom, her brother came not long afterwards and saw Tamar lying there with her garments rent, and ashes on her head. He comforted her and lifted her up and carried her into the palace. Then did Amnon greatly fear the wrath and vengeance of Absalom. In the meantime two full years passed by. One day Amnon received an invitation to join the sons of David at a banquet in Absalom’s palace at the time of sheep shearing. This was always a time of merrymaking, of feasting and of drinking. So Amnon went down to Baal-Hazor to the feast of the sheepshearers. It was a great feast. With the rest he very likely drank a lot. If he had not been drunk, he might have observed that Absalom looked at him with a vengeful glance. Yes, then Absalom commanded his servant, saying, “Mark ye now when Amnon’s heart is merry with wine, and when I say unto you: Smite Amnon; then kill him, fear not: have not I commanded you? Be courageous, and be valiant.” Oh, poor drunk Amnon. The words had hardly left the mouth of Absalom, when Amnon was murdered. All the other sons of the king arose and fled, also all the servants fled. There he lay on the floor, his heart-blood pouring out.

Dear friends, he died alone, without God. Let his death warn all of us. Beware of strong drink. It stirs up the appetites of the body; it unchains the demons of lust within the soul and brings men to shame, death and eternal darkness.

Now at last a message out of the life of Solomon. He was the wisest of kings, and yet he sometimes did foolish things. He was the king who, when he came to the throne and knelt at Gibeon’s holy altar, and was asked to choose what he wanted to have, chose wisdom to rule and judge God’s people. Because he did not ask for long life, or riches, or the life of his enemies, but only for wisdom, God made him wiser than all others, and richer than any other king. The Lord said to him that if he would walk in His ways, He would lengthen his days.

Yet he, the greatest and richest of kings, and according to the standard of the world, the wisest of kings, did also foolish things. Oh, look at Solomon in all his shame, building altars to Baal and Moloch for his 700 wives and 300 concubines who turned his heart away from God. We ask you: In the whole Bible was there a fall like this? It is possible that also in Solomon’s life the strong drink of wine and other kinds of liquor brought him to these terrible sins.

Hear what he said in Ecclesiastes, chapter 2: “I sought in mine heart to give myself unto wine, yet acquainted mine heart with wisdom; and lay hold on folly, till I might see what was good for the sons of men, which they should do under the heaven all the days of their life.” Oh, he knew it was all vanity. Hear his lamentation: “I made me great works; I built me houses, I planted me vineyards; I made me gardens of orchards, and I planted trees in them of all kind of fruits.” Oh, read for yourself what he wrote yet more as a lesson for us! Listen, my friends, what he said at the end of his explanation: “Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought; and on the labor that I had laboured to do: and behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.” Also not of his wine drinking!

Above all the vanities there was one vanity which he again and again revealed in his books. Hear what he said in Proverbs 20:1 “Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging, and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.” Another text out of his book — Proverbs 21:17 “He that loves pleasure shall be a poor man; he that loves wine and oil shall not be rich.” And in Proverbs 23:29 “Who hath woe? Who hath sorrow? Who has contentions? Who has babblings? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes? They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.” There are more text about that. Look it up for yourself.

Hear in the last place his confession of guilt, a lesson which he had learned of his mother: “It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is nor for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink: Lest they forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.”

All this, dear reader, testifies against the abuse of what God gives on earth. Especially, my young friends, don’t forget the warnings out of your Bible. They tell us that God knows our foolishness. He still gives us the examples in His dear Word to a blessing for our life, for body and soul. May the Lord teach us to pray for grace and a life that hates sin and the world.

BIBLE QUIZ

Dear Boys and Girls,

For most of us summer has arrived so that there is no school for a couple of months. Those who attend one of our own schools will no doubt miss the Bible lessons each day, and others will miss the catechism classes held during the winter months. But summer does not mean that God and His Word should be forgotten, or thought about only on Sunday. There could even be more time to give to our Bible study. Or isn’t that possible?

In the Bible we will find time and again that the Lord calls people, yes, boys and girls, to seek Him. He has given examples enough of those who have sought Him, but also of those who have turned away from Him. It should speak to us of the blessing of seeking, and warn us of the danger of turning away from God and His Word. May the Bible be your companion also in the summer months.

“Search the Scriptures,” Jesus said,
“Where eternal life you see;
These your study should be made,
For they testify in Me.”

Search the Scriptures, day or night,
Mines of knowledge they contain,
All who search therein aright,
Stores of heavenly wisdom gain.

Search the Scriptures evermore
With a docile, humble mind;
Light and aid from heaven implore,
All their hidden wealth to find.

Search the Scriptures, young and old,
Learn their sayings well by heart;
Half their worth can never be told;
Endless blessings they impart.

The Bible quiz this month contains many texts which speak of seeking the Lord, but there are also questions regarding those who turned from the Lord and went their own ways. The first letters of the answers will spell out seven words which are spoken about Jehoshaphat.

And now to answer some letters:

LEONA BRINK — Congratulations to your parents, Leona. How many years have they been married? A couple in our church will celebrate their 50th this week. And I recently read in the newspaper of a couple who had been married 75 years. A long time, but for each it is true, “Man goeth to his long home.”

KIMBERLY STELSEL — Yes, Kimberly, God’s Word tells us that death can come as a thief in the night, meaning when we do not expect it. Some are sick for some time, but for others there is not a moment’s warning. Therefore the Bible says, “Be ye also ready.”

NICOLE ARNOLDUSSEN — Thank you for your letter, Nicole. How are your twin cousins? When you see a little baby, it is hard to believe that you were once that small. Is Natalie better again? Give our greetings to your parents. And do write again.

ESTELLA SCHOUTEN — How did you prove your experiment about the hottest part of a flame, Estella? Can you explain why it is true? Science reveals many wonders of nature, but it is not always so easy to explain them. We can then only acknowledge the wisdom of the Creator.

RIA DROOGENDYK — There are some who send me suggested questions, quizzes or crossword puzzles, Ria, and I do use them if they are suitable. They must be based strictly on God’s Word, and should require some use and searching of the Bible.

CATHY BOTH — How are the baby goats doing, Cathy? The birth of young animals and birds is another wonder of nature. We are presently attempting to hatch some duck eggs, but we are not too sure that we will be successful. Did you name your goat?

LOUISE BRINK — Do you get a report card at the end of each quarter, Louise? If the marks are good, report cards are willingly taken home, but if the marks are down, it’s another story. Everyone cannot have the highest mark, but each one must do the best he or she can.

JANET KARDUX — Are there problems with floods in your part of the country, Janet? We read that the melting snow high in the mountains can cause real difficulties at lower levels. We blame this to natural causes, but read in Psalm 29, “The Lord sitteth upon the flood; yea, the Lord sitteth King for ever.” Congratulations on your birthday.

ANITA SCHOUTEN — You are right, Anita, there is much taking place in the world today which is contrary to God’s Word and commandments. But do we find this only in ‘the world’? What do we find in our own hearts and in our own lives?

JOEL ARNOLDUSSEN — What part of school don’t you like, Joel? We know that Adam and Eve were told of thorns and thistles which would be encountered by them, and these are also to be found by boys and girls when they are yet young. Perhaps your grandfather will tell you something about them.

PHILIP SCHOUTEN — Did your kite fly when you had it finished, Philip? I recall reading that Benjamin Franklin used a kite in some of his experiments with electricity. Do you know about them? He saw the wonders of nature, but we do not know that he exalted the Creator in these matters.

MRS. BLOK’S CLASS — PROVIDENCE CHRISTIAN SCHOOL — I enjoyed your letters, boys and girls. Did you have an enjoyable field trip? How did you like the train ride? We hope that you have a nice vacation this summer, and that the Lord may protect you “in the home and by the way.” So much can happen before school begins in the fall, since we do not know what each day brings us. Do write again. I hope you don’t mind that I answered all your letters with this one letter.

JONAS ARNOLDUSSEN — Your letter is last, Jonas. No doubt you have grown since we visited your home a few years ago. Of Samuel it is said, “he grew on, and was in favour both with the Lord, and also with men.” May that also be your privilege.

Again many thanks, boys and girls, for your replies. Our congratulations to all graduates. May you use your education to God’s honor and to the good of your fellow-beings. Each gift, each talent, which the Lord gives to us adds to our responsibility. Ask the Lord for His help in this way.

With love,

Your friend,

“Uncle Garret”

BILLY BRAY — HIS EXTRAORDINARY FAITH IN GOD

One morning Billy appeared in the door of his house with a child in each arm. Joey said:

“Billy, where are you going with the children?”

“The mother’s dead, and the father’s run away and left them, and I thought I’d bring them in, and rear them up with ours.”

“But we have four of our own that you can only just maintain, and these must go to the workhouse.”

But Billy’s mind was made up. He believed that the Lord could give them means to support the children, and he would not turn them out. So he set the little boy and girl down among his own children, saying, “Here, my dears, this is your home now.”

At that moment, there was another stranger in the home. He was a Christian too, and better off than Billy was. He saw what took place between Billy and his wife, and thought to himself, “I am quite well off, and have no children to support. Yet I would be afraid to take two strange children into my home.” This visitor had £2. 15s. 10d. in his pocket. He gave five shillings to Billy towards maintaining the children. Billy immediately shouted,

“There, Joey, the Lord has sent five shillings already, although the children have not eaten a penny loaf.”

Seeing how much five shillings had meant to Billy, the stranger gave five shillings more.

“Praise the Lord! Joey, didn’t I tell you the Lord could feed them here?”

After a minute the man doubled his gift to Billy, giving him another ten shillings.

“Hallelujah! for the Lord will provide”, was the response.

After this, the visitor took up a book and began to read. But his mind was not on his book; it was on the other £1 15s. 10d. still in his pocket. “Lord, what am I to do?” was his anguished cry. “Give Billy more”, was the clear reply.

“Billy, I have not given you enough yet; take another sovereign.”

“Glory be to God! Cheer up, Joey, the money is coming!”

Again the visitor tried to settle, but found he could not. Not while he still had 15s. 10d. in his pocket. He gave ten shillings, and finally he gave over the last 5s.10d. But Billy refused the ten pence.

“No brother, keep that to pay turnpike-gates when you go home.” (Billy referred to dues which travellers had to pay on the roads in those days.)

Billy’s faith regarding the Lord’s care over these little children was now rewarded, and he wanted to praise. “Let’s have a little prayer”, he suggested. And pray he did, and while he prayed the visitor thought, “I have never felt such divine power; I never expect such a blessing again, this side of heaven.”

THE DIARY OF A BIBLE

Here a Bible speaks from experience in the form of a diary. Is this also the experience of your Bible?

January 15: I had a quiet week. During the first evenings of the new year my owner had read me continually, but seeminly he has now forgotten me.

February 2: Today it was housecleaning time. The dust was taken off me and the other things on the shelf, and after this I was put in my place again.

February 8: After breakfast my owner used me for a few moments; a few places were read and then he took me to church with him.

March 7: They were busy cleaning again; I was dusted and put back on the shelf. Since going to church, I had been lying upon a small table.

April 2: Today I had an uneasy time. My owner went to a meeting where they were to speak about the Bible. He looked for some certain verses. It took a long time before he finally found them, even though they were in their usual place.

May 5: I laid the whole afternoon on Grandmother’s lap. She is visiting here. A few tears fell upon the 9th verse of II Corinthians 8.

May 9: Every afternoon I have been on Grandmother’s lap. She reads a few moments and then talks with me.

May 10: Grandmother has left again. I am back in my old place on the shelf. She gave me a parting kiss.

June 3: Today someone laid a four-leaf clover between my pages.

July 1: I was packed among other things in a suitcase. We went on vacation, I have discovered.

July 10: I am still in the suitcase, although just about all the other things have been removed.

July 15: Home again on the shelf. It certainly was a long journey; I really cannot understand why I went with them.

August 1: It is truly distressing and hot. Two magazines and a hat are covering me, and also a novel. I would be glad to have them removed.

September 5: I was dusted, straightened, and returned to my place.

September 10: Today I was used by a member of the family who had to write a letter to a friend whose brother had died. A suitable Bible text was necessary for the occasion.

September 30: I was dusted again today.

Is this perhaps your Bible? Take from Banner of Truth — 1957

A SIGHTLESS FAMILY

One cannot imagine a sadder sight than a whole family that is blind — father, mother and children — and a home where they have never looked on each other’s face. The father sits with a blind boy on his knees and a blind mother with a sightless child on her breast, a child which has never gladdened its mother’s heart with its smile and which in turn never saw a mother’s smile cheer it in its infant years. Truly pathetic indeed. And yet there are thousands of such homes up and down the land in which spiritual blindness reigns — a blindness like that of Egypt’s darkness, which could be felt.

A MIRACLE!

A minister was once mockingly asked, “What did Providence do for the martyr Stephen when he was being stoned to death?”

The minister prayed for help to answer, and then replied, “God enabled Stephen to say, ‘Lord, lay not this sin to their charge.’ (Acts 7:60). This was a greater miracle than a deliverance by legions of angels.”

DELIVERED!

An Indian was once asked what the Lord had done for him. Lacking words to express it, he went and gathered some dry leaves and made a circle of them. In the middle of the circle he placed a worm, but then set fire to the leaves. When the poor little worm began to writhe and wriggle from the heat of the fire, the Indian put his hand out and plucked the worm up and put it in his bosom.

“There,” he said, “that is what the Lord has done for me.”

“Is this not a brand plucked out of the fire?” (Zechariah 3:2).

GOD

Many years ago an old man lay in bed because of sickness. He was a wicked man who did not believe in God. Over his bed was a plaque on the wall which read, “God is nowhere.”

One day his little granddaughter came into the bedroom to see him. She was just learning to read, so he asked her to try to read what was written on the plaque. Slowly she began, and what she read was this: “God…is…now …here.” God is now here!

The old man trembled when he heard it. For the first time he realized that there is a God.
