THE REV. J. TAMMINGA PASSED AWAY

2 minuten leestijd Arcering uitzetten

In the late evening of October 9, 1984, we received a call from the Rev. Carl Schouls that his father-in-law, The Rev. J. Tamminga had exchanged time for eternity at the age of 77.

We met each other for the first time at the annual meeting of the Reformed Political Party in Utrecht. It was during the time that he served his first congregation in Utrecht where several of God’ s people lived in those days. We have also known and met several of the Klaasen family when we often served the congregation in the Veluwe.

In the years of the war, when his church in Rotterdam was destroyed by bombs, he served his congregation with Word and sacraments in the church on the Boesemsingel.

Later we met each other in Ontario, until he came to Grand Rapids in 1960. He left in 1972. In those years we did not live far from each other, so that we met each other from time to time, as was also the case with Rev. Smits, who also served that congregation for some time. Later we also met each other occasionally, also his wife who was taken away in 1981. One generation comes and another goes. Also during his last illness we have at times spoken to each other, when his children were taking care of him.

The Rev. Baars spoke in the church of Hamilton on I Thes. 4:13, and the Rev. C. Pronk spoke on the cemetery in Mitchell. Especially in the last years it was a fluctuating life, as we have heard from his own mouth. Our office falls away as with Aaron, but the living hope wrought in the heart by the Spirit of God shall not make us ashamed. Rev. Baars said that his last words were that it was peace.

The Lord strengthen the family and sanctify the blow that has fallen, also for the churches he has served, for instruction and conversion, and a preparation for eternity.
