A PERIODICAL FOR YOUNG AND OLD
O Timothy keep that which is committed to thy trust. I Timothy 6:20
SORROW
“But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping.”
John 20:11a
Is there a feast that begins so sorrowfully as Easter? With God’s children there is no happiness, are no joyful voices, but only sad countenances. Their hearts are filled with anxiety and grief. This was also true for Mary Magdalene. Formerly she was a very wretched woman. The Lord had cast seven devils out of her, and she was delivered out of the power of Satan. She was bound to the Lord Jesus with unbreakable bonds.
But now Jesus has departed from her. She has seen how He hung and died on the cross of Golgotha. She had been enabled to bestow a token of love by anointing His body. But this had been the last.
Now to her great alarm she sees that the grave is empty. Where must she seek His dead body? In addition to the sorrow because of His death is now the sorrow of an empty grave.
Mary doesn’t understand that this is just the wonder of Easter. It doesn’t come into her mind that He is already on His way to reveal Himself. Yet this is so. After a few moments her gladness will become so great that she will not be able to imagine it. But now she is only sorrowful and she lets tears run freely.
A lot of tears are wept in the world — tears of grief and sadness because of painful losses, tears of unfilled desires and unanswered prayers. There are tears because of the trials of life and the distress which people sometimes cause each other. There are tears because of a handicap which can cause us to be bowed down.
But do we ever shed tears because we miss the Lord Jesus? Or weren’t we ever made aware of being without God? Then there is no room in our heart for the Lord Jesus. If we are healthy we do not miss the absence of a doctor. But if we are sick and call a doctor, then we hope he will come soon. Then we need him. It is this way also spiritually. The Lord comes where He cannot be missed.
The risen Prince of Life stands behind her without Mary realizing it. He said unto her, “Woman, why weepest thou? Whom seekest though?” Then Mary told Him why she was so sad.
What was the Lord’s answer? Did He say, “I am Jesus?” No, He only said, “Mary!” Does this Stranger know her? She turned herself around and looked at Him, and it is like a dream. Is it a wonder that she fell at His feet? In holy amazement she says only one word. Her gladness is so great that she cannot say any more than only, “Rabboni!” which means ‘my Lord, my Master.’
Richer than before, she may again receive Him. On Easter the light arises upon the event of Good Friday.
BIBLE QUIZ
Dear Boys and Girls,
This month we again have a crossword puzzle, and the subject is “happiness.” The word “happy” is a very common word and we find it also a number of times in the Bible. But if we study it carefully, we will find that there is a great different between the true happiness of God’s people and the happiness of the world. Do you know the difference?
Many people search for happiness. If you were to ask them, they would soon be able to give you a long list of things which they think would bring them this happiness. Money would probably lead the list. However, many years ago Solomon told how he had gathered silver and gold, and houses and gardens, and treasures of all sorts, but he had to confess that all was vanity and vexation of spirit. You can read about this in the book of Ecclesiastes.
But God’s Word does tell us what makes a person truly happy. As you work out the quiz this month, you will discover the answers which the Bible gives for this, and it is a happiness worth seeking. We hope and pray that there are many boys and girls who desire this happiness and who may be finders of it. The happiness of this world is not to be compared to it.

And again some letters to answer:
REBEKAH VAN DER BRINK - Your letter will be first this time, Rebekah. It was nice to hear from you. We had quite a lot of snow one week, but now it is raining and much of the snow is melting. When you saw so many cars in the ditch, I am sure it made you think about your need for the Lord’s protection as you travelled.
RONALD BERTRAM - How many boys and girls do you expect to have in the school now, Ronald? Is the building project completed? In the Bible we read, “Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that built it.” Don’t you think that this is also true of schools?
LEONA VANDEN BRINK - We read of your uncle’s death in the “Saambinder”, Leona. Time and again we are informed that someone has died. Sometimes it is a person unknown to us, but at other times someone who know. Each time it is also a calling to us, since it is an event which comes upon each of us.
JOEL ARNOLDUSSEN - We are quite well, Joel. Were you quite sick when you had the measles? We know that the many sicknesses are upon the earth because of the fall of man in Paradise. But there was a more serious result because of the fall. Do you know what that was?
CINDY KREFT - Has Edson arrived already, Cindy? It is hard to believe that there are so many abandoned children in that country. As we look back in our lives, how we must acknowledge the providing care of the Lord over us; for each of us so different, but the Lord rules over all events which take place.
KRISTI DE VRIES - The histories of the kings of Judah and Israel are given us for our instruction, Kristi. What lessons do you think there are for us in them? We do know that many of the kings lived as if there were no God, and neither did they have any need for Him.
TRINA VAN TOL - We are always glad to again hear from you, Trina. Have you been able to attend church of late? God’s Word contains many lessons for young and old, but of all of us it must be said, “slow to understand.” May He give us together what we need from day to day.
KATHLEEN KANIS - Have you always lived in Chilliwack, Kathleen? Some always remain in the locality in which they were born, while others move from place to place, sometimes even long distances. In the Bible we read of persons or peoples who moved long distances. Can you think of some?
KEVIN POST - Yes, Kevin, our canary started singing again after we gave him vitamins. Do you have any pets? There are many different kinds of pets, such as dogs, cats, birds, fish, and there are probably others. They all require a certain amount of care and attention.
ADRIENNE AND CHRISTINE MYNDERS - We had four days in which the school were closed because of the weather. I think that everyone was then glad to be back in school again. Were you riding in the bus when it slid in the ditch? Does your minister visit your class sometimes?
YVONNE BISSCHOP - Yes, Yvonne, when you enjoy doing something, it seems that it becomes easier to do. Also each time that you do the quiz, you learn to know the Bible better, and this helps in making it easier. Do you like the crossword puzzles?
JONATHAN HOLDEN - Jonathan, we were surprised to receive a reply from Rhode Island. How are your parents and grandparents? Be sure to give them our greetings. What grade in school are you in? We hope that we may hear from you again next month, D.V.
JESSICA ANKER - Was your dog quite old, Jessica? I enjoy receiving letters from the boys and girls and reading about the things they do. In that way I learn to know their parents, their families, their teachers, and much more about them. Do you like to write letters?
DARLA RUS - It was nice to hear from you, Darla. As we have mentioned before, the quizzes can be somewhat difficult at times, but with a little effort (and perhaps a little help) the answers can usually be found. Do you have cows, pigs or chickens on your farm?
ESTELLA SCHOUTEN - You wrote about extremely warm temperatures, Estalla, while others write about extremely cold temperatures. In His wisdom the Lord has determined also these as being beneficial for man. They are to continue “while the earth remaineth.” Do you know where this was clearly promised?
REINEKE BERTRAM - You will find the story of the pet lamb in II Samuel 12, Reineke. Do you find any areas where only the Maori language is spoken, and the people do not know English? The many languages which today exist were also brought about by the hand of the Lord.
NICOLE ARNOLDUSSEN - We can only be amazed at the many uses which are made of electricity today, Nicole. What a different life-style people lived before its invention. We had a severe icestorm in January, and many areas of the city were without power for a number of days. Then we realize how much we use it.
PHILIP SCHOUTEN - Animals are usually taught to do certain things by rewarding them as they accomplish them, Philip. Do you think that this is also the way that boys and girls should be trained or taught? Perhaps your father will tell you what he thinks about it.
ANITA SCHOUTEN - Yes, Anita, the Lord gives strength and ability, to some more and some less. What use is made of them? Do we use them as they should be used? Different answers will be given to these questions, but if answered correctly, are we not guilty of misusing them?
NEIL DEN BOER - I know that there are quite a few grandparents who look for the names of their grandchildren in the list of names, Neil. Probably some are disappointed at times, don’t you think? It shows that God’s Word is being studied and I think that most grandparents hope that their grandchildren will do so.
JANET KARDUX - Your letter is the last one, Janet. How are you doing in school? When school begins in September, it seems like a long time to the end of the school year, but how quickly we are approaching it. The days, but also the years, pass by so rapidly. Many thanks, boys and girls, for your answers to our quiz. It is good to see that we hear from many of you, and we only pray that the Lord may teach us in His Word with light from above. We hope that you also pray for this. With love,
Your friend,
“Uncle Garret”
WORDS FITLY SPOKEN
Frederick and Annette were sitting at the door of their cottage home in Switzerland one Sabbath afternoon talking about the sermon which they had heard and which had been about keeping the Sabbath holy. They tried to remember as much as they could. “The minister said we ought to love the Sabbath more than any other day, and put away all our work, and think about Jesus, and try to help any one in trouble,” said Frederick. “Yes,” agreed his sister, “but do you know, I saw old Joseph making baskets today; and yet the Sabbath is God’s day.”
The children were silent for a little. Then Annette said, “Supposing we were to go to old Joseph and tell him that the Sabbath belongs to God?” So off they went the little distance along the road to where the poor blind man lived. They found him in his front garden weaving a basket. Coming up to him, Annette found courage to say, “Joseph, do you know today is Sabbath, and the Sabbath belongs to God? We ought not to make baskets today.”
The blind man looked cross, and said sharply, “Who are you, and what do you want?” “I am Frederick,” said the little boy, “and this in Annette.” “And we are only come to tell you,” added Annette, “that the Sabbath belongs to God, and that we ought to love Jesus and love the Sabbath.” The poor man knit his brow and, turning from them impatiently, went on with his work. The children stood with such an imploring look; it would almost have touched his heart had he been able to see them; but he only said, “You have nothing to do with me, children; go away home.”
“I must give you this first,” said Frederick, and he slipped a penny which his uncle had given him into Joseph’s hand, for he knew that he was poor, and was sometimes forced to beg. Taken by surprise, Joseph in a milder tone said, “Well, tell me what it is you want.” “We wanted to give you this,” they replied together, “and to say that we ought not to work on the Sabbath.” “What could I do if I didn’t?” said Joseph; “It would be no good to me going to church, for I am blind and nearly deaf too.” Frederick took from his pocket the little Testament that had been given to him at Sabbath-school and said, “If you would not mind stopping work for a few minutes, I will read to you what we heard today at church.” He sat down on the grass, Annette doing the same, and in a clear tone read part of the ninth chapter of John’s Gospel about the blind man whom the Saviour cured. This was something quite new to the old man. He listened with folded arms, more than once expressing his astonishment. The children then left saying, “Good-bye, Joseph; please do not work any more on the Sabbath.”
After they were gone, the bund man felt as though he could not go on with his basket. He sat still for a long time, deep in thought. The children’s words, “The Sabbath belongs to God,” had taken hold of him.
When the children came the next Lord’s Day, they found Joseph ill in bed. They sat down beside him, and Annette said, “Would you like Frederick to read to you again?” “Yes,” said Joseph with a sigh. “The boy read the fifth chapter of John right through. The man listened carefully, and when Frederick had finished, said, “I should like to hear more about Jesus, but have no one but you to read to me. Could you not come sometimes in an evening and read to me a bit?” “Oh, yes!” exclaimed both children, quite delighted, “we could come after school.”
And so these two children were allowed to read God’s Word to the blind man. They came most evenings, read to him a chapter of the Bible and told him what they themselves had been taught about Jesus Christ Who died for sinners and receives all who come to Him. Joseph was ill for many weeks, and during this time was often visited by the good minister of the village. It pleased God so to bless His own Word that, though Joseph was still blind, the darkness was taken away from his heart. He learned first to know that he was a sinner, and then to look to Christ as his Saviour. The gloomy look he used always to have disappeared, and instead he came to have habitually a happy expression. After some time he was in a good measure restored to health, and one fine Sabbath morning he went for the first time to God’s house, led by the two dear children who had first carried to him the message of mercy.

MOTHER AT PRAYER
Once (says a popular writer) I suddenly opened the door of my mother’s room, and saw her on her knees beside her chair and heard her speak my name in prayer. I quickly and quietly withdrew, with a feeling of awe and reverence in my heart. Soon I went away from home to school, then to college, then into life’s sterner duties, but I never forgot that one glimpse of my mother at prayer, nor the one word, my own name, which I heard her utter. Well did I know that what I had seen that day was but a glimpse of what was going on every day in that sacred closet of prayer, and the consciousness strengthened me a thousand times in duty, in danger, and in struggle with the battles of daily life. When death came at last, and sealed those lips, the sorest sense of loss I felt was the knowledge that no more would my mother be praying for me.
