BIBLE QUIZ
Dear Boys and Girls,
What does a person cry out who has fallen into the water and is in danger of drowning, or perhaps a person who has lost his way in the woods? The little word “Help” is shouted as loudly as possible, in hopes that someone will hear and come to the rescue. Have you ever had to cry out, “Help!”? Some may say, “Yes, when I was younger, it did happen, but now I can take care of myself.”
But if we really think about it, don’t we need help day by day? Who gives us food, drink, health, parents, friends, etc.? If these were taken from us, what would we do? Where would we go? And if we have these, are there not more things that we need? What about wisdom, strength, abilities for the things we do? The list of our needs is almost endless. Who gives us life? In all these things, can we help ourselves? Others can and do help us, but they and all these other gifts and blessings are given us by the Lord.
What about the need of our soul? Is there no need? An eternity lies before us, and where shall we spend it? Can our minister, our parents, our friends, or can we ourselves provide that which is necessary to live and die happily? There is but One Who is able. When the disciples were in the ship upon the stormy sea, they turned to the Lord Jesus and cried, saying, “Lord, save us! we perish.” May that also become your cry, even while young and strong and healthy, for it is a very great need.
It is true that we also have daily needs which we can bring to Him. Even as you begin the new school year, you may ask Him for help in your studies and in all that you must do. The Lord Jesus said to His disciples, “Without Me you can do nothing,” and this he says also to you. Every morning you may ask the Lord for His help and protection throughout the day and for the wisdom and ability you need. We hope that you do so — every morning again.

And now to answer our letters. But before I do so, I must tell you some sad news. Mr. Schouten of New Zealand has informed us that his daughter Anita passed away on August 1 at the age of 20 years. Anita had been answering the Bible quiz for quite a long time and usually also wrote a short letter. She had not been in good health for some time, although she seemed to be improving again. As her father also wrote, “The Lord’s time was there.” In her last letter, Anita wrote, “Health is a blessing and gift from above, and little do we realize this, but just take it for granted. We can only hope and pray that the Lord will bless the means which He has provided.” This speaks to each of us that life can soon and unexpectedly be taken from us. May the poet’s prayer be our prayer, “O teach Thou us to count our days, and set our hearts on wisdom’s ways.” I am sure I speak for all of you in expressing our deep sympathy to Anita’s father, to Reg, her fiancee, and to Estella and Philip, her sister and brother. May the Lord comfort in the midst of their sorrow.
Ria Nieuwenhuis,
We are glad to have you join in answering the quiz, Ria. I could read your letter very well, even though it was written in the Holland language. Be sure to give our greetings to your grandmother and aunt. Tot ziens, hopen wij.
Janet Kardux,
Did you pick quite a few berries this summer, Janet? I am sure it can be a very tiring job, but there is always a reward when you are paid at the end of the day. In the Bible we also read about people who worked in the fields. Can you name some of them?
Trina vanTol,
Yes, Trina, we made a mistake in those numbers, but are glad that they are not too serious. Our mistakes can sometimes be very serious but we also know that the Lord can make straight what we have made crooked. The people of the Lord may find their comfort in this.
Charmain Huisman,
We welcome you also, Charmain. It is always nice to see new names added to the list. Are you the oldest in your family, or do you have older sisters? The Bible speaks of families with brothers and sisters, and also we find a family where there were only daughters.
Joel Stam,
So you are anxious for school to start again. What grade will you be in, Joel? You probably look forward to see your teachers and classmates again. Did you find the questions were any easier this month? It does take some work to find them, but that is not so bad.
Maria Droogendyk,
Has your grandmother left again for Holland, Maria? I can still remember when my grandmother came for a visit from Holland many years ago. It was in 1936, so you can figure out that it was a long time ago. At that time they came by boat and then by train to our city.
Sonya De Boer,
How is your sister, Sonya? How far do you have to travel to visit her in the hospital? May the Lord bless the means provided, so that she may improve and return home again. Be sure to say Hello to her for us. When we visit a hospital, we can see somewhat how much sickness there is.
Peter De Boer,
It does take some searching to find the texts, Peter, but you have a chance to read many other texts in the meantime. If we only think that each text is Cod’s Word to us, how busy we should be with our Bibles. Were the questions hard this time?
Leona Vanden Brink,
We really enjoyed being in Leth-bridge again, Leona, and meeting a number of our young friends. It was a busy time, also for all those who welcomed teachers into their homes. It would be nice if we lived nearer to each other, and we could then meet more often.
Estella and Philip Schouten,
We can somewhat imagine your thoughts as you receive another issue of the Banner of Truth. Rev. Robert M’Cheyne wrote that the death of his brother had a lasting impression upon him, and may Anita’s death also have such an impression for you. He wrote to a young boy whose brother had died, “Improve this sharp wind, dear A., for you will soon lose the benefit, if not carefully sought after.”
Thanks to all for your answers and letters. May the shortness of life be impressed upon each of us. We say so often that even old people must say that life is short and soon flies away, but who is certain of becoming old? May the Lord spare us together and teach us of Himself.
With love,
Your friend,
“Uncle Garret”
