BIBLE QUIZ

16 minuten leestijd Arcering uitzetten

Dear Boys and Girls,

In the fall of the year we especially hear about harvest time, the time of the year when the crops are brought in, whether it is from the field of the farmer or even from our own gardens, either large or small. Some things have not grown so well, perhaps because of lack of rain or too much rain, temperatures too hot or too cold, or maybe everything went real well in some areas. All through the land we may still see the Lord’s goodness over us, for what have we deserved? As a people and as a nation we have given the Lord many reasons to withhold His blessings, even as He has done at times in the past. I am sure you can think of a number of occasions in the Bible where famine prevailed in the land. How thankful we should be for the food which the Lord yet provides us.

When the Bible speaks of the harvest, it is not always referring to crops of the field. You will find this out as you work out the quiz this month. The first letters of the answers will spell out five words spoken by the Lord Jesus in Matthew 9. There He was not speaking about the fruit of the land, but about the need for laborers in the spiritual fields. That need is also with us today, and may we together pray unto the Lord of the harvest that He might send them forth. In God’s Word, but also in the pages of the past there are many examples of the sending forth of His servants.

Garret J. Moerdyk serves as elder in the Netherlands Reformed Congregation of Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Again we have our letters to answer:

Anita Roth,

It was nice to hear from you again, Anita. Will you be able to walk to school when you move into the new house? Or is it too far for that? I suppose your little baby brother receives lots of attention from you. In the Bible we read of a girl who also paid special attention to her brother. Do you know who this might be?

Frank Kardux,

Would you like to live near the equator where it is always hot, Frank? We must be amazed at the many different climates that there are upon the earth. The Lord directs them all. It would be good if we would think of it more often, especially when we don’t like the weather we are having.

Nelly Stam,

Last summer we tried to hatch some duck eggs, Nelly, but only one hatched. The Word of God also speaks several times about eggs of various kinds. The Lord has time and again used the things of nature to instruct us by them. How much we need wisdom to understand the meaning.

Hilde Droogendyk,

We were glad to have you join in answering the Bible quiz, Hilde, and hope that we may hear from you each month. I am sure your sisters will help you if there are some rather difficult ones among them. Even when we are older, we are still learning every day.

Cindy Kreft,

We also enjoyed our visit in Leth-bridge and Fort Macleod, Cindy. It was real nice to be able to meet you and your family. We arrived home safely Monday evening. We may again see the Lord’s protecting hand, since there are those who travel from home, but never return.

Christine Mynders,

How is your grandfather in the Netherlands, Christine? How old is he? When we see old people in the hospital with many bodily afflictions, we can better understand what Solomon meant when he spoke of the “evil days” which come upon a person. That is why he said, “Remember thy Creator in the days of thy youth.”

Joel Arnoldussen,

How far was the river from your house, Joel? Is it quite a large river? We really enjoyed our stay at your grandmother’s house. Be sure to say hello to her for us, but also to your other grandparents and the rest of the family.

Maria Droogendyk,

What a nice long letter, Maria! Do you have some idea what you would like to study if you continued on with your education? Each person is different, and it is good that we all don’t like the same thing. We should also make these things a matter of prayer, asking the Lord to guide and direct us.

Stella Schouten,

We are glad to hear from you, Stella. Empty places come into our lives, as you have experienced. To each of us the Word of God says, “Be ye ready also.” We receive many callings, but may the Lord then also give us ears to hear them and hearts to understand them.

Charmain Huisman,

Our congratulations to your uncle and aunt, Charmain. We can understand that they were happy to have an addition to their family. Do they live near you? The weather here is turning somewhat cooler now. It is very evident that summer has left us.

Trina vanTol,

We appreciate your letters, Trina, and look forward to hearing from you. There is so much for us to learn, also from the Bible quiz, especially since it is taken from the Word of God. If the Lord may give light, then it is light.

Derek Kreft,

What color are those caterpillars, Derek? There are some that are brown and black, and some people say that the amount of brown shows how cold the winter will be. We are anxious to hear if Edson has arrived. Do give our greetings to your parents and brothers.

Nicole Arnoldussen,

How is school going for you, Nicole? Do they give you lots of work to do? The summer months seemed to go by quite quickly. Or don’t you think so? If you were anxious for school to start, it may have seemed that the last weeks went by rather slowly.

Philip Schouten,

What kind of stickers are they which you are collecting Philip? I know of stamp collectors, but am not aware of anyone collecting stickers. Your letter is the last one this time. Be sure to give our regards to your father.

Many thanks, boys and girls, for your answers to the quiz. We hope that we may meet again next month. School books and studies keep you busy at this time of the year, but we hope that you may also find time for the best book of all, the Word of God.

With love,
Your friend,
“Uncle Garret”

EVERY EYE SHALL SEE HIM

“Behold, He cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see Him”

— Rev. 1:7

But with what different feelings those countless throngs will gaze upon Him. One vast group will see their crucified Savior, and what a shout of rapture will greet His glorious appearing! But the other vast crowd will only see the stern Judge, and receive the reward of their unrepented sins. No cry of joy from their lips, but the shriek of terror, and the fruitless appeals to the rocks and mountains to fall on them and hide them from the awful sight of an angry God.

But still the unalterable edict stands: “Every eye shall see Him.” Therefore, dear readers, is it not time we asked ourselves the solemn question, “How shall I gaze upon Him? Shall I see my Savior or my Judge? Shall I hear, ‘Come, thou blessed,’ or, ‘Depart, thou cursed’?” We must see and hear one or the other.

Now, while the door of mercy is open, Lord, help us to hasten to enter in. Forbid that we should only awaken from slumbers, unprepared, to hear the cry, “Behold, the Bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet Him”; for,

That awful day will surely come,

The appointed hour makes haste,

When I must stand before my judge,

And pass the solemn test.

Oh, that we may be found of Him in peace, is our earnest wish!

ONE THING I KNOW

John Newton used to say, “I am not what I should be. I am not what I long to be. I am not what one day I hope to be. But, blessed be God, / am not what I once was!”

AN INDIAN’S HOPE

It was hot, very hot, as groups of travellers trudged wearily along the dusty road under the Indian sun. For one old and lone traveller it was too much, and he collapsed at the roadside. There was a godly missionary on the same road. When he saw the Indian collapse he went to his side. It was clear that the poor man was dying. The missionary said gently, “Brother, what is your hope?”

It needed a big effort for the Indian to answer. But he lifted himself up a little and weakly said, “The blood of Jesus Christ cleanseth from all sin.”

The missionary was amazed to hear that. He thought that the man was a heathen, like so many others in India, and that he did not know anything about God. “How could he have learned about Jesus?” the missionary asked himself. And just then he noticed a piece of paper in the man’s hand. Although the Indian was now dead his hand held it very, very tightly.

What was it? The missionary was so surprised and so happy when he looked at it. It was a page from the Bible. On that page was the first chapter of the First Epistle of John. If you look up verse seven in the chapter you will find the words the man said.

Cod had taught him from that one page that he was a sinner and that Jesus Christ takes away sin because He has died to save sinners.

Will you pray that God would teach this to you too; and that He would really cleanse you from all your sin?

—Young People’s Magazine

THE PERSIAN CARPET

The Persians have always been famous for their carpets. It is said that in former times there was a platform above the place where the carpets were woven. Only the overseer, the one in charge, was allowed up on the platform.

To the workmen down below he would give his instructions: a red strand here; a black one there; here a white one, there a few of the same color.

The men down below could only see the underside of the carpet, and it all seemed confusion; but up above, the overseer could see every strand falling into its proper place.

When the carpet was finished (and not till then!) all the workmen were invited up onto the platform, and could see the beauty of the design, not a thread out of place.

Jesus said, “What thou knowest not now, thou shalt know hereafter.” How confusing things seem at times to us now! Why should there be all these black threads? Yet we believe and “know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them that are the called according to His purpose.”

With mercy and with judgment
My web of time He wove,
And even the dews of sorrow
Were lustred with His love.
I’ll bless the hand that guided,
I’ll bless the heart that planned,
When throned where glory dwelleth
In Immanuel’s land.

MERCY

In the days of Napoleon a French soldier was sentenced to death. His aged mother walked all the way to Paris and, having been granted an interview with the Emperor, pleaded for mercy.

“Madam,” replied Napoleon, “your son does not deserve mercy!”

The old woman’s immediate reply was, “Your majesty, if he deserved it, it would not be mercy!”

THE FEAR OF GOD

A little servant girl was asked by her pastor if she believed she possessed the fear of God.

“Yes,” she said.

When asked why, she continued: “At one time I used to sweep up beautifully wherever anyone could see; but since God put His fear in my heart I clean up just as carefully where no one will ever look.”

CLEAVING TO CHRIST

All I want is a frame of mind best suited to Thy glory. And what is that? Truly that when I have nothing, feel nothing, can do nothing, am worse than nothing, that then, even then, I may be rich in Thee amidst all my own bankruptcy. This, dear Lord, is what I covet, and if Thou withholdest all frames which might melt or warm or rejoice my own feelings, yet if my soul still hangs on Thee notwithstanding all, as the vessel upon the nail, my God and Jesus will be my Rock that feels nothing of the ebbings and flowings of the sea around, whatever be the tide of fluctuating affections.

— Dr. R. Hawker

SHAKING ON THE ROCK

A shipwrecked sailor managed to swim to a rock. It was a wonderful relief to him to lie there in safety. There he lay through the night, cold, the waves swirling round the rock.

When rescued, one of the questions put to him was, “But didn’t you shake?”

“Yes,” was the reply, “but the rock didn’t!”

A sinner, through fear, may shake even on the Rock of Ages; but he cannot be shaken off it, and the Rock itself will never shake.
