ISRAEL’S WILDERNESS JOURNEY
Rev. G. Van Reenen
Price: $6.00
We are glad to be able to bring into print a third translated volume of the renowned writings of the deceased Reverend Gijsbertus Van Reenen. His The Heidelberg Catechism, first printed in Dutch in 1929, was translated and published in English in 1955. Subsequently, a small volume, A Dialogue: Bert and Case About the Parables and the Beatitudes, was published in 1975. Similar in format to this translated dialogue, the present volume is a Bert and Case expository dialogue of Numbers 33 which details the phases of Israel’s wilderness journeys, experientially relating the places encountered to the life of spiritual pilgrims traveling to the heavenly Canaan.
Reverend Van Reenen’s (1864-1935) ministry spanned several congregations. He served the Vrije Cereformeerde Gemeenten in Zeist (1899-1904) and Leiden (1904-1907), prior to uniting with our Netherlands Reformed Congregations at the commencement of our denomination in 1907. Subsequently, he pastored the congregations of Leiden (1907-1912), Opheusden (1912-1916), Gouda (1916-1920), Werkendam (1920-1923), and did some work in Bodegraven (1925-1928). He received emeritation in 1923 at the early age of 59, due to a stroke, but continued to serve the churches on occasion, though he was primarily made useful in God’s providence through his continued writings until his death in 1935. Largely through these writings, he, being dead, yet speaketh (Heb. 11:4).
Rev. G. Van Reenen’s dialogue writings (Bert and Case) are very instructive and have been blessed to many both in the Netherlands and North America. We pray and trust that God will likewise use this translated volume to the instruction of true believers, the conversion of sinners, and the glorification of His own Name.
Highly recommended for young people and adults.
Forward orders (U.S. Funds or equivalent) to Netherlands Reformed Book and Publishing Committee, 1020 N. Main, Sioux Center, Iowa 51250. —JRB

DAYTON CHRISTIAN SCHOOL LOSES HIGH COURT ROUND
prominent evangelical Christian school has lost a significant round in a legal battle over hiring practices. The U.S. Supreme Court, in a unanimous decision, has upheld the right of a state civil rights agency to act on a complaint from a woman who was fired by the school.
In the decision, written by Chief Justicedesignate William Rehnquist, the court rejected a claim by the Dayton (Ohio) Christian Schools that proceedings by the Ohio Civil Rights Commission relating to the firing of Linda Hoskinson violated their right to free exercise of religion.
Mrs. Hoskinson was told in 1979 that her teaching contract would not be renewed for the next year because she was expecting a child and the schools believed that mothers should stay at home with their young children. Instead of following the schools’ internal appeal process, Mrs. Hoskinson contacted an attorney, who threatened to take the schools to court for violating Ohio’s sex discrimination law.
When Mrs. Hoskinson was fired for taking the complaint outside school channels, she filed a formal complaint with the Ohio Civil Rights Commission. The schools countered by filing suit in a federal district court challenging the panel’s jurisdiction on church-state grounds.
The Supreme Court has sent the case back to the district court with instructions not to decide the dispute until the state panel issues its ruling. In the decision, Judge Rehnquist wrote that “even religious schools cannot claim to be wholly free from some state regulation.” — Presbyterian journal
