This month's questions were asked by young children attending Netherlands Reformed Christian Schools in New jersey and British Columbia.
Forward questions intended for this department to: Rev. I.R. Beeke, 2115 Romence St., N.E., Grand Rapids, Ml 49503 Questions will be published anonymously.
Is it good to listen to on all-news station om Sunday?
No. God gave you Sunday as a wonderful gift, so that you might worship Him on that day. Of course, every day you are to worship God, but Sunday is a special day God has set aside to worship Him in church, at home as a family and by yourself.
Do you love Sundays? I hope so. If the Lord gives you a new heart, then you will have much to do on Sunday. Besides, by the time you go to church, Sunday school or catechism, pray and read the Bible and other religious books, and worship with your family, there won't be time left for the radio. Today there are so many good and interesting books for children to read. Ask your parents to help you find them.
Did you ever wish that there were more than one Sunday each week because you wanted to have more special Sabbath time to seek the Lord?
Is it bad if you don't read the. Bible after. meals?
You and I need physical food for our bodies. You and I also need spiritual food for our souls. The Bible is the best spiritual food in the whole world. So it is a good habit to read the Bible after each meal. If this isn't being done in your house, pray about it and then ask your parents if they will do it. If they won't, try to read the Bible on your own.
When you read the Bible, don't forget to ask the Lord to help you understand what you read and to give you the Holy Spirit as you read.
Did jesus have a wife?
No, not in the way you are thinking. But the Bible speaks of God's people as Jesus' bride. In a spiritual way, He is so close to people to whom He has given a new heart that He is like a husband and a father to them.
Will you pray that He might be like a father to you?
How old was jesus. when He. gat baptiged?
Thirty.
How old was. jesus, when He was crucified?
Thirty-three. Only three years after He was baptized and started His ministry!
Can people, find Mases' body if then searched hand?
No, in Moses' day God would not let anyone find his body so that no one could make an idol of him or the place where he was buried. Now it would certainly be too late to find anything, nor would it be right to try.
How did God come, into the. world?
God was always here. There was never a time when God was not alive. He is eternal. That means He always lived and shall never die. He was before the world. He made the world. He is above the world. This earth and all the heavens cannot hold Him (1 Ki. 8:27).
In the. Apastle's. Creed, what doed, it mean when it says, "He descended into hell"?
It means that all the sufferings in hell which God's people earned because of their sins were suffered by Jesus in their place. Jesus had to bear the burden of their hell, in order to pay for all their sin and make a way for them to escape hell and to go to heaven. He didn't do this by physically going to hell, but by suffering their hell while He was on earth, especially when He died on the cross.
What languages do you study to be a minister?
Ministers should try to know as well as they can the two languages in which most of the Bible was written — Hebrew and Greek. Latin is also a good language to know in order to study books written many years ago by important people in church history. And in our churches, ministers may be helped by learning Dutch, since we have more churches like ours in the Netherlands than anywhere else. Also, just like in English, there are many wonderful religious books to read that are written in Dutch.
When did the anqels sin?
Probably soon after God finished creating everything and had rested on the seventh day. We know they didn't fall before the seventh day because God looked upon everything He had made and said it was "very good" (Gen. 1:31). But we also know that they did fall before Adam and Eve because a fallen angel tempted them (Gen. 3).
Please remember that only some angels sinned. These we call devils. One important devil has the personal name of Satan.
If there were no sin in the world would there be a bible?
No one knows. All we know is that there is sin and we need the Bible to be saved. Ask the Holy Spirit to make the Bible very real to you. You cannot read the Bible too much.
Why did jesus have to have disciples?
He didn't have to have them, but He wanted them and chose them freely. You don't have to have friends, do you? But you like to have friends, I think.
To be a disciple of Jesus means to be His friend and to follow Him. If God works in our hearts, we will want to follow Him. In fact, we will wish we could follow Him better. We will not want to leave Him. In Mark 10:52 when Jesus healed Bartimaeus, He gave him permission to go away, but Bartimaeus "followed Jesus in the way."
Ask the Lord Jesus if you may be one of His disciples. He loves to have boys and girls as His friends and followers. Oh, how wonderful it would be if you might know Him as your Friend and Savior! Jesus is the best Friend in the whole world.
Is it bad to have a tatoo?
It is better to leave our bodies unmarked. In Leviticus 19:28, the Lord says: "Ye shall not...print any marks upon you: I am the LORD."
We should try to be content with the way God made us, and worship Him with both our souls and bodies.
How did we get the Bible?
God sent His Holy Spirit to work in the hearts of many of His people, whom He chose to write Bible books. Using their personalities and backgrounds, the Holy Spirit "moved" them to write exactly what God wanted them to say (2 Pet. 1:21; 2 Tim. 3:16). That's why we call the Bible inspired, because this word means that the Bible is "breathed" by God. That means every word is from God. No wonder there are no mistakes in the Bible as it was written!
Later, the Christian church saw that sixty-six books were inspired, and put them together under the title, The Holy Bible, which means "the holy book."
I hope, boys and girls, that you may not only hold the Bible in your hands and read it with your minds, but also receive it into your hearts and live it in your lives. For this, you need the same Holy Spirit who guided the writing of the Bible.
From Acts 28:11, what does it mean that the ship was carrying the sign of Castan and Pollux?
Heathen people believed that Castor and Pollux were sons of Jupiter, and pretended that these sons could control storms in the water. So by carrying these signs, their idea was that these gods might protect a ship on its trips.
We, of course, know better. For Jesus only is in control of all storms. He is King of the waves, and they must obey His voice (Mt. 14:32).
Dear boys and girls, Jesus is also able to help you with all the difficult times you have in your young lives. Not only storms on the water, but also the storms of your guilty conscience, your hard schoolwork, or any sad and hard thing that may happen to you — He is willing and loves to help children who bring everything to Him. Oh, seek grace to bring all your storms to Jesus and not to the gods of this world who can help you no more than Castor and Pollux!
From that same chapter in wree 27, what does it that "the heart of this people is wared gross"?
"Waxed gross" is an old-fashioned way of saying, "grew fat." Here God means to say that the people grew lazy and sloppy about their souls.
Must God say this also of you? I hope not. You see, we "grow fat" when we don't read the Bible, don't pray seriously, don't do our best in school, don't listen carefully in church, and don't ask God to bless all these things to our hearts.
How could Paul say that he was "pure from the blood of all men" to the Ephesians when he befor persecuted and killed the Christians?
Only because all his former sins had been forgiven Him through the blood of Jesus. Paul could now honestly say that he brought the Word of God to the Ephesians as fully and purely as he could. He had given them both wonderful callings to bow before God and serious warnings to run away from sin. On the Judgment Day, no Ephesian would be able to say that Paul had held back part of the truth of God. That's why he felt he could say that he was free from their blood. Read Ezekiel 33 and you will understand what I mean.
How many years were the Israelites in the wilderness?
Forty.
How come people in Bible times didn't have last names?
Last names started when there were too many people in the world to keep them apart by having only one name each.
Is it hard to teach people the Word of God?
Sometimes. It's easy when we feel the Holy Spirit helps us or when He opens hearts to make people willing to hear His Word. It's hard when we don't feel His help or when we feel that people don't want to bow under the Word of God.
Either way, however, we must continue to teach. The Lord says that we must sow the seed of God's Word (Mt. 13). He will make people teachable and bring fruits. The "bread" we cast upon the waters shall be found after many days (Eccl. 11:1). God's Word shall not return to Him void (Is. 55:11).
I hope the Lord may help you to bow under His Word. Then you will be easy to teach, too.
Was it long for Joseph and Mary to travel from nagareth to Bethlehem?
Yes, it probably took them three or four days.
Do you only preack to Christians?
No. Ministers must preach to both converted and unconverted people. Each church has both.
Do you have to pray for a new heant if you. already, have one?
Yes. We do not only need God's power to receive a new heart, but also God's help to keep a new heart. There is so much that remains in the hearts of God's people that fights against the Lord. Only through Jesus, who always prays for His people in heaven, can God's people continue to keep their new hearts.
I hope you may pray often: "Lord, convert me and keep me converted, for Jesus' sake. Amen."
