BIBLE QUIZ
Dear Boys and Girls,
Two men were walking together, talking as they went. They were very sad. Another person joined them. To him they explained the reason for their sadness. Jesus of Nazareth, who they thought would redeem Israel, had been crucified. They could not understand that these things had happened. They were, of course, thinking of a deliverance for Israel from under the hands and power of the Romans. This same thought was in the minds of other of Jesus’ disciples, as we can read in Acts 1.
It is true, they did not have the entire Bible, Old and New Testaments, as we have it today, to tell them plainly of the redeeming work of the Lord Jesus. But the person who joined them as they walked, the Lord Jesus Himself, taught them as they continued along the way.
But, even today, do we rightly understand the work of Christ? We do have the entire Bible, both Old and New Testaments. We too need the instruction of the Lord Jesus to understand it. He sends His Spirit into the hearts of His people to teach them the mystery of His coming upon this earth to suffer and die. Ask the Lord much that you may also be taught in this way.
The first letters of our answers will spell out six words spoken by the Lord Jesus to these two travellers.

And now to answer our letters again:
Rachael Timmer
We hope your birthday was a nice occasion, Rachael. Do you know of any in the Bible who remembered their birthdays? It is a time when we must also think about the Lord’s care over us through another long year of 365 days.
Nelly Stam
Yes, Nelly, our teeth are rather important to us as human beings. The Lord has wisely provided us with them in order to chew our food properly. Can you think of any texts in the Bible where the teeth (or a tooth) are particularly mentioned?
Steph Vander Boon
I see that you have been studying the Jewish calendar, Steph. We can see how that days, weeks, months, and years were in existence since the very beginning by studying our Bibles. If you had to choose the most important day of the year, which would you select?
Sonya Den Boer
Have you made lots of new friends, Sonya? Since many of your relatives live there, you certainly are not among strangers. We do read in God’s Word of some who went to live in a strange land. Can you think of some examples of this?
Erica Feyter
Although it is cold, the winter time is also a beautiful time of the year, Erica. The wonders (or the handiwork) of the Lord can be seen in all seasons of the year. How often we complain, rather than admire the work of the Lord in nature.
Jaco De Visser
It was good to hear from you, Jaco. It is not always easy to find the answers to the quiz, I know, but perhaps sometimes you may find other answers to questions you might have. God’s Word contains so much, and we know so little.
Peter C. Van Brugge
We are quite well, Peter. We haven’t had any heavy snows this winter, but since summer isn’t quite here yet, it could still happen. Which classes or subjects do you like best in school? Or do you like everything about school?
Cindy Kreft
I see that there are two letters from you, Cindy. Sometimes they arrive just after the list has been sent to the printer, and then they must wait until the following month. Your letters are always welcome, and it is nice to hear about your family again. Give our greetings to your parents and brothers.
Philip Schouten
Camping in a tent during thunderstorms is far from ideal, Philip, but we can always expect to have some bad weather as well as those sunny days. Congratulations on your birthday! We hope that you may have many more, but also that you may have another birthday.
Michelle Boesterd
Do you like to make speeches, Michelle? Some have a real problem in speaking in front of others. Or doesn’t that bother you? I am sure it makes a difference when you have a friendly audience rather than an angry one.
Charmain Huisman
What was your speech about, Charmain? How long did it have to be? It sounds as if the chicken pox stayed at your house for a few weeks. We hope everyone is better again. sickness and diseases are found throughout the whole world. Nobody is spared from them.
Remco Funcke
When you also give the text where the answer is found, we know that you have used your Bible to do so. Otherwise you could possibly give many of the answers without opening the Bible, and that is not the purpose. Kindergarten begins here at the age of five years, so that grade five would be about ten or possibly eleven years.
Estella Schouten
What kind of subjects are you taking now, Estella? Or are your classes still quite general? We are never certain what lies in the future, but we do find that certain courses have a greater interest for us than others. We still think of Anita, and how soon her life came to an end.
Jenny Boesterd
Did your parents enjoy their trip to Mexico, Jenny? I am sure that they have seen people with different customs and different styles of homes, but also with different religions. How thankful we must be that we are born and brought up in families and a church where the Word of Cod is taught to us in a right way.
Derek Kreft
Your letter is the last one this time, Derek. There are also two letters from you here. Did you finish your tree-house? Be careful that you don’t fall out. Ten meters is too far to fall. In the Bible we read about two house-builders. Do you know what the difference was between them?
Dear young friends, again many thanks for your replies to the quiz. May we continue to study Cod’s Word together, praying that He may bless it unto us. We hope that we may meet here again next month, D.V.
With love,
Your friend,
“Uncle Garret”
A FATHER’S ADVICE
“My boy,” said a father to his son, “treat everybody with politeness, even those who are rude to you; for remember that you show courtesy to others, not because they are gentlemen, but because you are one.”
“We were gentle among you”
(1 Thess. 2:7; 2 Tim. 2:24).
THE STUBBORN HORSE
About 100 years ago in one of the villages of the Dutch province of Utrecht stood a large farm. The newly married farmer and his wife were very happy as they toiled to get on in the world. But that changed.
They never went to church, but stayed at home or visited friends each Sabbath. Then it pleased the Lord to convert the young wife. To her husband that was dreadful; and when she talked about religious things, especially the need of repentance, he hated it and became angry.
The people of God in the village liked to talk with her and she loved to have them visit her. But her husband could not bear their godly talk. Just to see one of them coming to the house roused his wrath. One day he said to his wife, “These people must not come here again.” She tried to calm him but to no avail. He insisted that their visits had to stop and she had to warn them.
However, there were some friends at a distance who, not knowing of her husband’s ban, came to visit her. He was enraged. “If this religious talk in my house does not stop,” he stormed at his wife, “you can leave here and go back to your parents.”
His poor wife, her heart sinking, asked him, “What will all the people say then?”
“I don’t care,” he answered, “you can’t live with me if this goes on.” How earnestly she prayed to God for help in her great trouble!
One morning her husband came in from the farm and heard his wife talking with some visitors. In his fury he went into the room. The startled visitors jumped up. To his wife he said, “You will leave now. I’m going to get the horse and cart to take you back to your parents. Go and get ready.”
Her tears did not soften him at all. She saw she had no alternative but to pack. “Oh Lord, help! Oh Lord, help!” she prayed. “Let me stay here!” She heard her husband shouting “Are you ready?” Yes, she was ready. Weeping she came out to the cart.
The farmer took the reins and told the horse to go. But the horse seemed as if it heard nothing. It just stood still. The farmer did not at all like that there were people standing around looking. Angrily he gave the animal a stinging lash with his whip. “Forward!” he shouted but the horse reared and still refused to go. Another lash, more sharp than the last. His wife, in fear, tried to get out of the cart. “Keep your seat!” he ordered. Then he went to the horse and patted its neck. He waited 15 minutes. Again he shouted, “Forward!” But the horse was on strike. Then suddenly— the horse went backwards and backwards until the cart was pushed hard against the haystack.
The farmer was determined to win and waited longer. Twelve o’clock came but the horse still refused. One o’clock passed but the animal was stubborn as before. Then it began to dawn on the farmer. He must give in. A higher power was working. Was this not God’s doing?
“Go into the house,” he said to his wife. From her heart went up the words of the Psalm: “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.” The prayers of the poor woman were heard in her day of trouble.
As for her husband, from that time he became very silent. No longer did he forbid the visits of his wife’s godly friends, but his hard heart remained the same. Soon afterwards he died in tragic circumstances.
The people never forgot the amazing incident of the stubborn horse. To many of them it was a solemn warning against hating God and His people. To some of them it was also a lesson that God’s ear is always open to the prayers of His people, and that they are to always remember His precept and promise: “Call upon Me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify Me” (Psalm 50:15).
