DR. GORDON DEUR
A few weeks ago, Dr. Cordon Deur (elder in our First Netherlands Reformed Congregation of Grand Rapids and speaker at Baldwin, Michigan mission) received the trying news that he has liver cancer. As of this writing he is undergoing a variety of tests to determine the possibility of surgery and/or the need for chemotherapy. May we all remember this dear friend and brother, as well as his wife and family, at God’s mighty throne of grace. May Jehovah-jireh — the Lord who provides — perform wonders, both physically and spiritually. May He gladden both him and us with His deeds.
Above all, as is our brother’s desire, may God get glory to Himself through this heavy affliction. To date the Lord has granted encouraging submission to His will and we can only pray that this grace may be prolonged and sanctified also to others round about him. Oh, how often the Lord uses trials, weakness, and brokenness in His people, whether as members or as office-bearers, to magnify His own name and to confirm His Word: “My grace is sufficient for thee: for My strength is made perfect in weakness” (2 Cor. 12:9a). It is our deepest wish that our brother may continue to experience this, for then Paul’s amazing response may also be his at times: “Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me” (v. 9b; cf. v. 10).
