BIBLE QUIZ
Dear Boys and Girls,
We again approach the time of the year when we observe Thanksgiving Day, a day to take special notice of the many blessings which the Lord gives us. Although those who live in Canada observe this day in October, while we in the United States do so in November, the purpose is the same. What a large number of blessings there are given us from the hand of the Lord! But perhaps there is something lacking?
I am sure all of you know the story of Haman in the book of Esther. This man had become a favorite of King Ahasuerus. He received advancement and riches, had a large family, and of these things he boasted. We read that one day he came home and called for his friends and his wife, and told them of the special honor he had received and also of the glory of his riches, the multitude of his children, and all the things wherein the king had promoted him. Sad to say, he had no place for the Lord in his life, and therefore he did not speak of all these things as God’s blessings upon him. However, we read that he felt something was lacking which made all these other things seem of so little value. It troubled him greatly that Mordecai, the Jew, did not honor him and bow before him. Poor Haman, he had much, but he still wanted more honor for himself! He did not know how rich Mordecai was, for Mordecai knew of a God in Israel.
As you look about you, you may see your many blessings and may also speak of them as God’s blessings in your life. You have churches, schools parents, friends, food, clothing health, etc. Others may have more than you do of certain things, but you do have much to be thankful for before the Lord. You are not like Haman who did not see God’s hand in his life—but is there something you too are lacking? Perhaps there is something you wish you had which would make you happier or more satisfied, such as money, nicer clothes, a swimming pool, better grades in school. Oh, then you would be happy! Yes, we do find the treasures, the honors, and the pleasures of this world so desirable, and yet they are only for a short time that we have them.
Haman said that all he already had was of little value because he still lacked something which he felt to be very important for him. But we must see that the blessings of our daily life also have such little value when compared with eternal blessings. The Bible shows us and speaks to us of the sad condition of those who live without God in the world, and the apostle Paul counted all things to be of no value if he could but win Christ. We hope that may be your chief need—to have a God for your life and a surety, a Savior, for your soul. The Lord who gave you all the blessings you now have can also give you such blessings. Then it would be a very special Thanksgiving Day.
The first letters of the answers to the quiz will spell out six words spoken by Haman to his wife and friends.

And again to answer the letters we have received —
Dawn Van Seters
Thank you for your letter, Dawn. Since it was the first one you wrote, we will answer your letter first. Do you live quite near to your school so that you can walk home? I suppose there are certain things which you like best about school. Or do you like everything about it?
Remco Funcke
We do make mistakes at times, Remco. Sometimes it is in spelling and at other times something is left out by mistake. But we are always glad to see that someone catches those mistakes, because then we know it is being read very carefully. We could not save all the letters and answers we get, so they are either burned or placed in the trash.
Ricky Arnoldussen
It seems that you had nice summer holidays, Ricky. And now it is back to school to study and to learn. The prophet said, “Learn to do well,” and another said, “Learn not the way of the heathen.” Those are lessons which we must work at our entire life.
Leanne Neels
If you visit all your relatives, you have quite a bit of travelling to do, Leanne. Jacob went to visit his uncle, and had to make a long journey on foot, but I am sure you would not try to do it that way. Do you like your new teacher?
Cynthia Dawn Huisman
You must have a good trap in order to catch a rabbit in it, Cynthia. I don’t suppose it likes being in a cage. Do you spend a lot of time with your grandparents? Some boys and girls only see their grandparents once every few years, and some even less than that. I see that there were two letters from you this time.
Philip Schouten
I see that you found many works of metal in the Bible, Philip. There must have been some very expert metal workers also in those days. What do you make of metal? From Remco’s letter I knew that you had been to visit him.
Cindy Kreft
We read about bats in the Bible, but according to the concordance they are only mentioned three times. They were an unclean fowl for the children of Israel. Our congratulations to your parents on their anniversary. We hope that they may have many more and you with them.
Johnny Den Hertog
Welcome to the Bible quiz, Johnny. We hope we will hear from you every month. Sometimes I am asked what the numbers 2 or 3 are for behind the names. That shows they have answered for two months, and their answers for one of the months did not arrive in time. I think we visited at your mother’s parents’ home at one time. Give her our greetings.
Larissa Van Voorst
As I mentioned in Johnny’s letter, Larissa, if the answers arrive too late for one month, your name will appear the following month. However, I usually send in my list of names to the printer on about the 15th of the month.
Stella Schouten
Have you had any amount of snow yet, Stella? Last winter we had a real mild winter with not much snow, but that is also unusual for us. Living where we do, it would be very strange to have a winter without any snow. Give our greetings to your father.
Becky Schelling
We heard about your visit in Jenison, Becky. It is nice to travel to other places and there to meet friends with whom you can visit. Do you like to travel? Do you know who it was that called his son Gershom saying, “I have been a stranger in a strange land”?
Derek Kreft
Your letter is the last one this time, Derek. In fact, I see that there are two letters from you. Your scarecrow must have looked quite real if it caused the dog to growl. We are having heavy showers this evening. It is quite amazing how much water can fall in a very short time.
Many thanks boys and girls, for your replies to the quiz. As we travel through this life, how important a place Cod’s Word should have for us. As I went to work this morning, there was an accident in which a young man on a motorcycle had been killed. How it reminds us again of the shortness of this life and that it can quickly come to an end. May the Lord prepare each of us for that moment.
With love,
Your friend,
“Uncle Garret”
P.S. In regard to the riddle which Rev. Beeke placed in the August issue, the correct answer was “the whale.” Some 56 correct answers have been received at this time. I’m sure it had many of you puzzled for a while.
THE MIND OF A CHILD
Coleridge says that Thelwall thought it would not be right to bias the mind of a child by instilling opinions before he/she should have arrived at an age to judge for him/herself.
“I showed him my garden,” says Coleridge, “and told him it was my botanical garden.”
“How can that be?” said he. “It is covered with weeds.”
“Oh,” I replied, “that is only because it has not come to its age of discretion and choice. The weeds, you see, have taken the liberty to grow, and I thought it unfair to prejudice the soil towards roses and strawberries” (2 Tim. 1:5).
Dear parents, are you “biasing” the minds of your children toward the precious truths of free grace?
“PERHAPS TODAY”
A well-known Christian has these words printed, framed, and hung in his dining room. What did he mean? Jesus is coming (Acts 1:11). Perhaps He may come today (Rev. 22:20)
Are you prepared to met Him today?
THE LAST CRUST
Harry had been a bad boy, indeed — his mother’s heart broken; his father’s business nearly ruined; himself a wreck. What was to be done?
Call a family council. Uncle John said if ever man had a kind father and a loving mother Harry had, and how terribly had he responded! Aunt Mary said the same. All relatives echoed confirmation.
At last the father’s turn came. Rising, he said, “Harry, my boy, you have heard what they all say, ‘Turn him out! turn him out!’ but Harry, my son, while there’s a crust of bread in this house, you shall have it.”
What threats could not do, love did. He broke down, confessed, and eventually was saved. Oh, the melting power of the love of God (Rom. 5:8; 2 Cor 5:14)!
MY VERY OWN
A heathen girl was once asked by her teacher, “Is there anything you can call your own?”
She hesitated for a moment, and then, looking up, replied, “I think there is.”
“What is it?” asked the teacher.
“I think,” said the girl, “that my sins are my own.”
SELL AND PAY
A wealthy gentleman, urging C.H. Spurgeon to come and preach a sermon to provide funds to pay the debt on the chapel, offered the use of his town house, his country seat, or his seaside place. The reply came prompt:
Dear Sir:
Sell one of your places and pay the debt.
Yours very truly,
C.H. Spurgeon
PRAYING TO CHANCE
A lady who had forsaken the God and Bible of her youth for the darkness of unbelief was crossing the Atlantic and asked a sailor one morning how long the trip would take.
“In fourteen days, if it is God’s will, we shall be in Liverpool,” answered the sailor.
“If it is God’s will!” said the lady; “what a senseless expression! Don’t you know that all comes by chance?”
In a few days a terrible storm arose, and the lady stood clinging to the side of the cabin door in agony. “What do you think,” she said to the same sailor, “will the storm soon be over?”
“It seems likely to last some time, madam.”
“Oh!” she cried, “pray that we may not be lost.”
His reply was: “Madam, shall I pray to chance?”
How different is the believer who may say, “All things work together for good to them that love God” (Rom. 8:28).
