ABORTION
Fifteen years ago on January 22, our Supreme Court made the infamous decision to legalize abortion on demand, thereby enhancing an epidemic of murder which is staining our land with unrequited blood. In the United States alone, 1,500,000 unborn children are murdered in the womb each year (that is, one every 22 seconds!).
God’s Word clearly teaches that personhood (body and soul) coincides with conception (Ps. 51:5; 139:13-16). Abortion is nothing less than premeditated, legalized murder of nameless, voiceless human beings created by God. Indeed, Scripture forbids murder—by abortion or any other means — ultimately because God created man in His image (Gen. 9:6). We may not do with life as we wish (1 Sam. 2:6). If humanly “unwanted” life is given, divine sovereignty must be submitted to, and grace sought to shoulder the responsibility of child-rearing in a biblical frame of mind. Divine justice shall rest heavily on the nation or people who persevere unrepentantly in such grievous sins as abortion (Ex. 21:22-23). National sins call for national judgment. Oh, how tragic shall our end be if the Lord visits us in just judgment!
May God save us both from this sin and from complacency in opposing it; ultimately, from ourselves and our ungodly hearts. He only knows how far the evil of abortion has penetrated the domain of the church.
What tasks are we then called to?
(1) Prayer. Seek grace to pray for our nation, its leaders, the medical profession, and others involved in this sin. Oh, may we be humbled in prayer as Daniel, beseeching God for mercy that there may be revival, repentance, and cleansing before divine indignation is poured upon us and there be no covering for our sin!
(2) Education. Obtain information on abortion and seek ways to fight effectively against it.
(3) Support. Speak against the sin of abortion when opportunity avails. Give financial and/or membership support to conservative anti-abortion groups.
(4) Legislation. Write your appropriate elected government officials on a local and national level to inform them of your opposition to abortion.
“Save Thy people, and bless Thine inheritance. Turn us again, O Lord God of hosts, cause Thy face to shine; and we shall be saved” (Ps. 28:9; 10:19). –JRB
