BIBLE QUIZ
Dear Boys and Girls,
As we begin a new year together, it is good to think about those things which are so important for us in daily life. And what would these things be? Would you include such simple things as bread and water? We may eat many things besides bread, but what an important place bread has in our daily life. And water is certainly something which we make use of every day. We cannot do without it. In one of the psalters we sing of a desert waste in which no waters be. Wouldn’t it be difficult to live there?
The Bible also speaks often about water, and the great need and many uses there are for it. I am thinking of a person of whom we read in the Bible who also saw the need of water. It was Achsah. Some will no doubt say, “Who was Achsah?” We read of her in the books of Joshua and Judges, and the same history is told of her in both books, although it is only a few verses. Achsah was the daughter of Caleb, one of the twelve spies. He with Joshua had brought back a good report of the land of Canaan. Later, when the land was possessed, he was given a portion. We read how he gave his daughter Achsah to be the wife of Othniel for his bravery in capturing the city of Kirjathsepher for the tribe of Judah. Caleb also gave the young couple a field, a piece of property, but it had no source of water. It was a dry land, and therefore Achsah asked her father for springs of water. Water was important for her in order to make the land fruitful.
Boys and girls, what does this history say to us? We may have many natural blessings, but they are but as dry land, unless enriched by spiritual blessings from the God of heaven. Spiritual blessings will be as water upon the dry land of natural blessings, making them fruitful. You too may ask the Lord that, among all your blessings for daily life, you may receive that blessing which truly maketh rich, the Lord Jesus as your portion. He is the Water of Life.

And again we will answer the letters which we have received:
Charmain Huisman
I think that we confused quite a few of the boys and girls when we gave them Psalm 107 for one of the answers, and it wasn’t to be found there. I am sure that everyone has read that Psalm over several times, and really hasn’t wasted time. I’ll try not to make such mistakes again.
Sara Van Pagee
Sara, it was nice to hear from you, and to have you join in answering the Bible quiz. It was always good to see that boys and girls are learning to know their Bible better. In the Bible we read of a young man of whom it is said that he knew the Scriptures from his youth. Do you know who that was?
Rachael Timmer
If all is well, there will be a crossword puzzle again next month, Rachael. I can’t say that I like the snow real well, but it is certainly pretty when you look outside at the newly fallen snow. What do you read of in the Bible that was “white as snow”?
jenny Boesterd
Usually there is one month delay in gettting your name listed for answering the quiz, Jenny. The names this month are mostly for the November quiz. This is because the printers must receive the copy quite early. If your answers arrive late, your name will be in the following issue. I just noticed that there are two letters from you.
Benjamin Hayes
Yes, Benjamin, the year has gone by real quickly. The Bible describes the shortness of life in several different ways. For example, it speaks of it as a shadow. Can you think of any other descriptions which are given in the Bible?
Susy Eckhardt
How many miles did you travel on your trip across country, Susy? Isn’t it amazing to see Old Faithful, and then to think that this has continued for so many years? The word “faithful” is also found quite frequently in the Bible. Can you find some of them?
Laura Smith
Yes, Laura, I have been in Jenison quite a few times. I have a daughter and son-in-law living there, and also several grandchildren. But I don’t know where Woodview Street is. Probably you can guess now as to about how old I am.
Estella Schouten
How do you like your work, Estella? How many hours do you work each week, or does that vary? How necessary it is to do our calling faithfully! It is true that everyone does not do this, but then we are walking contrary to God’s Word. Do you know what God’s Word instructs us about this?
Nelly Stam
We had snow today, Nelly, and I was just outside clearing my driveway. It is surprising how heavy the snow can be, although at other times it can be very light and fluffy. In which subjects do you have most of your homework? In our catechism class we have just finished the subject of the sacraments.
Wieska Hoedeman
We are quite well, Wieska. Do you ever play a duet on your violin with Jolene? Or do you have an orchestra at school? In Old Testament times we read of several musical instruments. Can you think of any? Some of them were used in the temple.
Michelle Boesterd
There are also two letters from you, Michelle. It is always nice to hear from you. How are the rabbits? Do you still think that the one is blind? Only a blind person really knows what it is to be without the ability to see, and how thankful we must be that we can see.
Philip Schouten
Do you like to draw, Philip? You mentioned your one subject in school was technical drawing. I would assume that this would be compared to what we called mechanical drawing, that is, when I went to school. Are you managing to train your puppy? We know that training is necessary — also for boys and girls.
Cindy Kreft
How old is Reuben now, Cindy? Say Hello to him for us. We still talk about our visit at your home a few years ago. I am sure that all of you have grown considerably since that time so that we would scarcely recognize you. Give our greetings also to your parents.
Craig Timmer
It was nice to get your note, Craig. When the roads are snow-covered and slippery, accidents happen so quickly. But even in nice, dry weather, we must ask the Lord to protect us, since every day we read of accidents which took place. Have you ever been in an automobile accident?
Derek Kreft
I had four daughters, Derek, but they are all married now. It sounds as if you like your science class. The laws and properties of nature and natural things are the handiwork of the Lord in creation, and in them we see His wonderful wisdom and providence. Do you ever think of this?
Boys and girls, that concludes our letters for this month, and brings us to the end of another year of the quizzes. May the things which we have learned be blessed by the Lord to our souls, and that we may continue to search the Scriptures daily, just as the Bereans did in the time of Paul. We wish all of you God’s rich blessing in the New Year.
With love,
Your friend,
“Uncle Garret”
THE BOX WITH THE SLIT
During the 1812-1814 war, an American privateer captured a small Welsh collier in the Irish Channel. The captain of the privateer, noticing in the cabin a strange little box with a slit in it, asked what it was.
“Oh!” replied the Welshman, “I and my poor fellows drop a penny apiece in that box every Sunday to help to send missionaries to the heathen.”
“Indeed,” exclaimed the American, “that’s a good thing.”
A brief pause ensued, and then the victor suddenly said, “I won’t touch your vessel nor a hair of your heads,” and, summoning his men, he returned to his own ship, leaving the collier with the missionary box to go his way rejoicing.
“Them that honor Me I will honor” (I Sam. 2:30).
WITHOUT A PENNY
A half-witted boy, watching the funeral of a wealthy miser, remarked, “There he goes, and not a penny in his pocket.” Contrast the believer’s gracious reward: “Henceforth a crown of righteousness (2 Tim. 4:8).
FLIES IN THE TELESCOPE
An amateur astronomer, scanning the heavens with a telescope, saw the stars falling pell-mell over each other. He exclaimed, “Whatever is the matter with the sky? There is no regularity about the motion of the stars today.”
A friend standing near him said, “Look into your telescope; perhaps the fault is there.”
The man did as was suggested, and found that several flies had crept into it, and were moving about! The sky was all right; the fault was with the telescope.
So many, looking at Scripture with limited vision, think there are all kinds of discrepancies (Prov. 26:12).
LEAVE THEM THERE
“Oh, Hannah, I do not see how you could bear so much sorrow!” said the visitor feelingly.
“I did not bear it,” was the quick reply; “the Lord bore it for me.”
“Yes,” said the visitor, “that is the right way. We must take our troubles to the Lord.”
“Yes,” replied Hannah, “but we must do more than that; we must also leave them there” (Ps. 55:22).
CANNOT HIDE
A teacher held up a vase of water in which a goldfish was swimming about, and said to the children: “Do you see this fish hide?”
“No, sir,” the children shouted; and as the fish moved in all directions, the question, “Do you see him now?” was repeated.
“Yes, sir.”
“Can’t he hide from you?” asked the teacher.
“No, sir.”
“Why?”
“Because we see through the glass.”
“So,” said the teacher, “God sees right through our hearts. We cannot hide from Him” (Ps. 69:5; 139:12; Matt. 10:26; Mark 4:22; Luke 8:17).
WHERE DO THEY GO?
Last century, a little girl returning from her first day at school asked her mother where the marks made on the slate and rubbed out went to.
“They disappear,” replied the mother.
“But where do they disappear to?”
“They vanish,” said the mother.
“But where do they vanish to?” enquired the girl.
“They are blotted out.”
But the mother could not make it plain where they went.
God says, concerning the sins of the sinner who believes in Jesus, “Their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more” (Heb. 10:17)!
