BIBLE QUIZ
Dear Boys and Girls,
The time again has arrived for school days and all that is involved with them—teachers, books, lessons, homework, etc. How quickly the summer is over and gone! As you turn to your studies again, may we also turn to God’s Word which has much to say to us about instruction. There are examples enough to be found in the Bible about good and bad instruction, but the Lord Himself gives much wise instruction for each of us as we continue to learn. How often we find the need expressed in the Bible by the psalmist and others, “Teach me”— “Instruct me”—”Lead me.” They knew that God by His Word and Spirit was the best of instructors for the needs and concerns of mankind, and especially of those seeking to serve Him. Are we also convinced of this?
There are many excellent teachers today in every imaginable subject, but God’s Word provides a foundation for all subject matter. Whether it is in business, in manual labor, in money management, in the teaching profession, in the field of medicine, or whatever, what a vast source of instruction is given to us. However, these occupations or tasks are just temporal, since our working days usually span only forty or fifty years at most. What is that when compared to a never-ending eternity? Therefore one thing stands out as being most essential, and that is a preparation for that eternity. We can only urge all who learn to consider where true wisdom begins, and to be seekers in the Word of God with prayerful hearts unto the Lord for His light upon it.
The first letters of our answers will spell out four words of instruction given to us in the fourth chapter of Proverbs.

In the book of Proverbs, Solomon said, “______ to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise.”

There are again letters to answer—
Cindy Kreft
Since you do volunteer work in a nursing home, Cindy, you see some of the difficulties met with in old age. It is wonderful that there are those willing to help them. We can readily see what Solomon was telling us in the twelfth chapter of Ecclesiastes.
Estella Schouten
I see that there are two letters from you, Estella. The one month’s answers must have arrived too late to be included last month. Of course, since your copy was missent to Ban-kok, that would explain why. Congratulations to your father on his birthday.
Remco Funke
When the boys and girls here have nine months of school ahead of them, your school year will soon be finished. How many weeks of summer holidays do you have? And how many other weeks during the school year? We hope to hear from you again next month, D.V.
Charmain Huisman
Mistakes do happen, Charmain, even though we try hard to eliminate them. The weather here this summer has been exceptionally hot and humid. In the early part of the summer, rain was scarce, but of late we have had a nice rain regularly, causing everything to be green again.
Sherry Both
How was your camping trip, Sherry? Did you have fairly good weather? Are your brothers younger than you? When you receive this issue of the Banner of Truth, school will again be in process for you. Who is your teacher this year?
Derek Kreft
When we speak of one inch of rain, it doesn’t sound like a great deal, but what a lot of water it would be if it came in one small area rather than an entire county. We must always realize that it is God who sends the rain. The Bible speaks in one place about an abundance of rain, but in other places we read that He withholds rain.
Cynthia Huisman
How is your Aunt Mary, Cynthia? We constantly hear of sicknesses and operations among the families. It is always a reminder of our fall in Paradise, but it should also direct us to Him Who is the Great Physician. Of King Asa we read that he sought not to the Lord, but to the physicians, indicating that he was at the wrong place.
Philip Schouten
Do you have plans made for what you would like to do after school ends, Philip? We do make plans, and it is good to consider the future, but also to realize our need of the Lord to direct us. A good prayer for all of us is, “Teach me, O Lord, the way that I should go,” just as the poet of one of our psalters.
This finishes my letters for this month. We trust we may hear from all of you again next month. May the Lord bless you in your studies, and that true wisdom may be given you. In answering the Bible quizzes, be sure to put your name on your answer sheet, as we are occasionally confronted with answers without the name.
With love,
Your friend “Uncle Garret”
LAW / ATONEMENT
A duck hunter was with a friend in the wide-open land of southeastern Georgia. Far away on the horizon he noticed a cloud of smoke. Soon he could hear crackling as the wind shifted. He realized the terrible truth: a brush-fire was advancing, so fast they couldn’t outrun it.
Rifling through his pockets, he soon found what he was looking for—a book of matches. He lit a small fire around the two of them. Soon they were standing in a circle of blackened earth, waiting for the fire to come.
They didn’t have to wait long. They covered their mouths with handkerchiefs and braced themselves. The fire came near—and swept over them. But they were completely unhurt, untouched. Fire would not pass where fire already had passed.
The law is like a brushfire. I cannot escape it. But if, by grace, I stand in the burned-over place, not a hair of my head will be singed. Christ’s death is the burned-over place. There I huddle, hoping against hope. The law is powerful, yet powerless. Christ’s death has disarmed it.
