Genesis 1–3

Did you ever look around you and see all the beautiful things? Where did they all come from? Let’s take a moment to think about them. We find pretty flowers… fruitful trees… green grass…and blue skies.

The sun comes up every day (even though it may hide behind a cloud!), and makes everything look so bright and cheerful.

Even the rain is nice! If we didn’t have rain, nothing would grow. We wouldn’t have apples, peaches, or corn. We wouldn’t have anything to eat.

Think about all the animals that are given to supply us with just what we need to eat. There are cows that give us our milk… pigs and other animals that give us meat…. and chickens that give us eggs. And don’t forget the woolly sheep that supply us with clothes to wear!

Think about all the pretty birds around us: the bright red cardinals, the flashy blue jays…There are speckled birds and plain birds… There are birds bigger than a man and birds smaller than your fist!

Think also about our weather. We have icy cold days, very hot days, and really beautiful days.

Sometimes we have rain… sometimes we have snow… sometimes even hail.

Where do all these things come from? Where do you come from? The answers to all our questions are found in the Bible.

What is the Bible?

Probably after supper, you hear your father read from a big black Book. Sometimes it is hard for you to sit and listen because there are so many hard words that you don’t understand.

But try very hard to listen the next time he starts to read that big black Book. Maybe your father will stop and explain what he is reading.

The Book that he is reading from is called THE BIBLE.

The Bible is a very old book from many, many years ago. It has a lot of smaller books in it. The Bible tells us all about the people who lived a long time ago, before you were born, before your mother and father were born; in fact, even before Grandpa and Grandma were born! There are many stories in the Bible, but they are not like the stories in your other books. The stories in the Bible are all true stories. They really happened.

Let’s look in the Bible to see what it can tell us about where all the wonderful things around us came from.

Our answer is found in the very first book of the Bible, which is called Genesis. This big word means “beginning.” The Bible reads, “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”

Do you know who God is?

I think you do. I’m sure your mother or father has tried to explain who God is, but maybe it was hard for you to understand. No one really knows everything about who God is, but maybe we can help to explain it better.

Do you ever see the wind? No, you can’t, but you know there’s a wind because you can feel it and you can see that it blows leaves around. That’s a small picture of how it is with God. No one can explain who He is. We can see what He does, but we cannot see Him. We know He is everywhere, even if we can’t see Him.

God sees everything you do. He hears everything you say. He knows everything you think. God has always been here and always will be here. God is invisible. This means that no one can see Him. He is not a person like you or me. We call God a Spirit

Lord, teach a little child to pray,
Thy grace betimes impart;
And grant Thy Holy Spirit may
Renew my youthful heart.

A sinful creature I was born,
And from my birth have strayed;
I must be wretched and forlorn
Without Thy mercy’s aid.

But Christ can all my sins forgive,
And wash away their stain;
Can fit my soul with Him to live,
And in His kingdom reign.

To Him let little children come,
For He has said they may;
His bosom then shall be their home;
Their tears He’ll wipe away.

For all who early seek His face
Shall surely taste His love;
Jesus shall guide them by His grace,
To dwell with Him above.
