BIBLE QUIZ
Dear Boys and Girls,
This month our quiz is about our hands. It is not necessary to tell you how useful our hands are. A person without hands, or, as we read of in the Bible, a person with a withered hand, has a severe handicap. Just think what it would be like to not have the use of your hands day in and day out. Even the loss of a thumb or a finger can make it difficult for us to do certain things.
For what purposes do we use our hands? If we stop to think of this, we will soon realize that our hands are used for good, but also for evil. As with all of God’s gifts and blessings, we can so abuse and misuse them. Our hands can be used to receive things given to us, but also to reach out and take or steal that which does not belong to us. They can be used to bless and to do good to others, but can also be used to harm them. They can be used to punish, both justly and unjustly. As children, we are taught to fold our hands in prayer; they can also be lifted up in prayer. The right hand is often raised in swearing an oath, but these oaths are sometimes broken later.
As we think about this, the question comes to us: What do we do with our hands? Hands which are not busy— the Bible calls them idle hands—are not good, but are our hands busy with right things? We must ask the Lord to also guide our hands and to keep them from evil.
The Bible also speaks to us about the hand of God. True, God is a Spirit, and therefore does not have physical hands as we do. When the hand of God is spoken of, it can mean His providence, His mercy, His favor, His work, and even His punishment or chastisement. The Egyptian magicians at the time of Moses saw the finger of God in the plagues, but the hand of God can also give deliverance to those who call upon Him.
As you work out the answers to this month’s quiz, you will find that the first letters will spell out a command given by the Lord Jesus to the man with a withered hand. Although, humanly speaking, it was impossible for the man to raise that withered hand, the command of the Lord also gave the strength to do so. May His commands also come with power in our hearts, boys and girls, so that we may do His will. We may also lift up our hands unto Him in prayer, since all blessings flow from His hand.

Derek Kreft
It sounds like you had an enjoyable visit in Holland, Derek. You no doubt have found that the words, “no place like home,” are true. Being away from home makes us realize it more. When you think of all the miles you travelled, you have much reason to acknowledge the Lord for His protecting care.
Rachel Leah Kik
It certainly was nice to hear from you, Leah. Do you have 35 different butterflies in your collection? Their wings are so fragile, but also so beautiful, especially when we think how they originate in a cocoon. Give our greetings to your grandpa.
Jolene Slingerland
Because of distances, families don’t all get together so very often, Jolene, so it is nice when they may be together for special occasions. Did you count how many grandchildren and great-grandchildren your great-grandma had?
Jessica Neels
We want to welcome you to the Bible quiz, Jessica, as we are always looking for new friends. A dairy farm usually means lots of cows. How many cows do you have on your farm? We hope that we may hear from you again next month.
Janine Klyn
Welcome to another new friend, Janine. From your address I assume you also live on a farm, or at least not in the city. Do you ride the bus to school? Now that school has started, you probably are busy with your lessons every day. Do you like school?
Ingrid Krul
I knew that rabbits will eat the bean plants, but I didn’t know that geese like them also. When animals and fowls become hungry, they look for food, just as we do. Too bad that they just don’t eat the weeds and leave the bean plants for you.
Cindy Kreft
We have had ample rain this past summer, Cindy. I don’t think there were many weeks without a rain shower, so that the grass stayed green all summer. You should have lots to write about after making that trip to Holland. Say Hello to your parents for us.
Gary Neels
Even though we are quite late, we send our congratulations on your birthday, Gary. We hope that you may receive many more in the future. Sometimes a year can seem like a long time, but looking back it always seems to have gone by quickly. Moses in Psalm 90 asked the Lord to teach him to number his days.
Geraldine De Boer
It is always nice to see another name added to the list, Geraldine. How is everything going in school? Do you have some subjects you like better than others? There are so many things to learn, but the Lord is also needed to give us wisdom, and we may ask it of Him.
Aline Bosch
Since we are going towards winter, you are probably thinking of summer holidays, Aline. When does your school year end? We saw some pictures of your church and school recently, so have an idea of the things you see every day. We cannot appreciate it enough when we have a church and a school where the truth is taught us.
Anita Klyn
Were you able to find the answers you couldn’t find, Anita. The answers are always given in the following issue so you can see what they should be. I am sure that some of the questions are more difficult than others, but we hope it causes us to study harder.
Julia Neels
Do you have a camper or do you use a tent, Julia? The weather for camping is now past for this year. We read that Jacob slept in the open with stones for his pillow. That is much different than the conveniences, which there are today.
Suzanne Van Den Bosch
It sounds like you gave your goat a Dutch name, Suzanne. With all those calves, you would run out of names if they all had to be named. Do you like to practice on the organ? As with all other talents which are given us, we must try to use them in the right way.
Many thanks to all the boys and girls for their replies to the quiz. May our studies, also at school, be blessed by the Lord, so that His Name may be honored as a result. We hope to hear from all of you next month.
With love,
Your friend,
“Uncle Garret”

WHAT IS UNSINKABLE?
A teacher in South Wales, telling his students about the “Titanic” being supposed to be unsinkable, and yet, on the first voyage, through crashing into an iceberg, she is now lying at the bottom of the ocean, asked them if they could tell him of anything that was unsinkable.
One boy replied, “Yes, sir. The Rock of Ages is unsinkable” (Ps. 31:3).
HE LED THEM STRAIGHT
One night in Egypt a young officer was leading the British to the attack, having for sole guidance the stars above him. At dawn that faithful guide was cut down, shot through the lungs. When death was nigh, he pressed the hand of his Colonel, who bent over him in sorrow, “Didn’t I lead them straight, sir!” he said, and passed away.
“The Captain of our Salvation” (Heb. 2:10) is leading all His soldiers straight to the Celestial City. By grace, are you one?
BETTER THAN THE MANSIONS
A young Christian, at death-bed of an aged saint, said to him: “Shall I read to you the sweetest verse of the Bible?”
“Yes.”
The young man read the second verse of John 14: “In My Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.”
“No,” said the dying man, “that is not the sweetest verse. Read on.”
The young man read, “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto Myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.”
“That is the sweetest verse,” said the dying man: “It is not the mansions, it is Himself I want” (John 14:3).
A WISE INDIAN
Tedyscung, chief of the Delaware Indians, was a very wise and respected chief. All the Indians in his tribe honored him highly. One evening he was sitting at his fireside with a friend. For a long time they said nothing, for each was busy thinking.
At last Tedyscung’s friend said, “Let me tell you what I have been thinking about. The Lord Jesus Christ is the chief of the Christians. He taught the Christians a rule. It is called the Golden Rule. I think it is the best rule I have ever heard of.”
“Stop,” said Tedyscung. “Don’t praise this rule before you have told me what it is. Let me hear it and think for myself.”
“It is this,” said the other Indian. “One man should do to another what he would have the other do to him.”
“That’s impossible. It cannot be,” said the chief. Then the two Indians were silent once again. Chief Tedyscung lit his pipe and thought seriously about that Golden Rule. Presently he took the pipe out of his mouth and said, “Brother, I have been thinking about the Golden Rule. Only if the Spirit that made man should give him a new heart can a man obey the Golden Rule, but never without that.”
