BIBLE QUIZ

Dear Boys and Girls,

Again we have arrived at the last month of the year. Eleven months have passed by, and the twelfth month will also soon be at an end. That little word “end” appears so often in our life—the end of each day, the end of the week, the end of the month, the end of a book, the end of school, etc. Then there is also a more final end— the end of our life. That, too, comes more quickly than we think, for we are soon old. Ask your grandparents who are much older than you are, and they will tell you how rapidly the years have passed by.

The end of the years (for most of us) brings us into the winter months. Outside there are no budding of trees, no blooming flowers, no signs of new life. This could be compared to the time at the end of the Old Testament. If we read the book of the prophet Malachi carefully, we will also find dead and dark times. The Lord had blessed the people in many ways, but Malachi had to speak to them about their unfaithfulness, their forgetting of God, their lack of religion, their profanity, their idolatry, they forsaking of the ways of the Lord. Everything seemed so hopeless, so dreary, so dead in their midst. But even at that time Malachi, as a prophet, could speak of something special which was to take place.

Near the end of the year an event is remembered which also speaks to us of “good tidings to all people.” It took place in the dark days of which Malachi spoke. It is commemorated by us near the end of the year when days are short and the nights are long. I think you already know the event of which I am thinking.

At the end of December we remember together the birth of the Lord Jesus in Bethlehem. Malachi spoke of Him as the “Sun of righteousness.” Without His coming into the world, all would remain hopeless and dark. We know that the sun brings warmth, brings things to life again in the springtime. When we speak of the “Sun of right-eousnes,” we are not thinking of the natural sun which shines in the sky, but it is the Lord Jesus, who is the “Sun” which gives light in the hearts of sinners. By nature we don’t think we are so in need of light. We have enough light. But in the Gospel of John we find that the Lord Jesus is called the “true” Light. All other light cannot be called “true” light. So we can see how necessary it was that He came.

It is our wish and prayer that He, as this “true” Light, may become necessary for each of us. Then we will not think of Christmas as merely a time of presents, trees with glowing lights, being together with friends, but it will have a very special meaning, just as was told to the shepherds. The angel said to them, “Unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” May He fill our hearts, our thoughts, our lives, at Christmas, and into the New Year.

The first letters of the answers will spell out eight words found in the second chapter of Luke. spoke of Jesus to all them that looked for redemntion in Jerusalem.

Again we shall try to answer the letters which we have received—

Joanne Noorduyn

Your letter is on top this time, Joanne, and we want to welcome you to the Bible quiz. It is always nice to see new friends added to the list, since older ones do drop off from the list from time to time. What grade are you in at school?

Leanne Les

It was nice to hear from you again, Leanne. How far is Edmonton from Chilliwack? It will not be long before travelling will be more of a problem again, with icy roads and snow. What kind of organ do you have at home? Give our greetings to your parents and family.

Gary Neels

Do you like school, Gary? The Bible tells us of things which took place many years ago, but it also shows us the evil which came into the hearts of men because of our deep fall in Paradise. That we can also see in the story of David and Bathsheba. What a wonder that the Bible also tells us of a Savior, who saves from sin.

Cynthia Huisman

Congratulations with your new brother, Cynthia. Are you helping to take care of him? Do you have other brothers, or do you only have sisters? We have also had two new grandchildren in our family recently, so we know what a happy moment that can be.

Christina De Leeuw

We were sorry to hear about the robbery, Christina. Every day the newspapers report that such things are taking place, but we feel it much more when it happens to us. It is a sin not only against our neighbor, but also against God, who has commanded, “Thou shalt not steal.” Do your grandparents live near you?

Cindy Kreft

We too have had nice fall weather, Cindy, but since it is now November, winter weather cannot be far away. As you study the Soviet Union, you no doubt see what privileges and blessings you have more than they. Does Adrian like to go to school?

Suzanne Van Den Bosch

Do you have a trap in which to catch rabbits, Suzanne? The Bible speaks about the snare of the fowler, but we don’t know just what kind of trap this might have been. We also read in God’s Word of the snare of the devil, and his snares can also be quite hidden for us.

Trina Huisman

Where do you have your swimming lessons, Trina? No doubt it is an inside pool, since it would be difficult to swim in an outside pool this time of the year. Do you live near your grandparents? It is always nice when they can receive visits from children and grandchildren.

Leanne M. Neels

Since we don’t live near any mountains, we always find it a beautiful sight to see the snow-covered mountains in the distance. Mountains are so majestic and huge, but when compared to the majesty and greatness of the Lord, they are as nothing. Isaiah said that the Lord weighs the mountains in scales.

Aline Bosch

Is the remodelling all done at your house, Aline? It is an inconvenience when it is being done, but is nice when finished. Was Rev. Harinck with you for more than one Sunday? I am sure it is always special when you may have a visiting minister.

Julia Neels

Yes, Julia, church history shows us how difficult it was at times in the past to live according to the Word of God and the teachings based upon it. How different this is today, where religion is often just considered necessary for the Sunday. How we must ask the Lord to keep us in the right ways!

Charmain Huisman

When we think about the events which take place, babies born while others, some younger and some older, are taken away by death, it is a reminder that we are also just travellers through this world, Charmain. It makes us realize how serious life is.

Willetta Les

Did you have a good report card, Willetta? Report cards tell us how we have done in the past, and where we must put forth more effort. If you were to mark yourself, would you have had better grades? Or would they have been lower grades?

This finishes my letters again this month. Many thanks, boys and girls, for your answers to the quiz. As we conclude this year, we once again wish you the Lord’s blessing in the Christmas season and in the New Year which we will soon enter, the Lord willing. It must be our prayer with the poet of Psalter 176,

O Cod to us show mercy
And bless us in thy grace;
Cause Thou to shine upon us
The brightness of Thy face.

With love,

Your friend,

“Uncle Garret”

God’s Will Best

A godly woman, who, when ill, was asked whether she was willing to live or die, answered, “Whatever pleases God.” “But,” said one “If God should refer it to you, which would you choose?”

“Truly,” said she, “if God should refer it to me I would refer it to Him again.”

A Wise Answer

“Where’s hell?”

Unheeding the interruption the preacher went on warning his hearers of the judgment to come.

“Where is hell?” again broke in from the outskirts of the crowd. “I’ve asked you a question, and you can’t answer it.”

“Yes I can,” replied the preacher, looking the scoffer squarely in the eyes. “Hell lies at the close of a godless and Christ-rejecting life.”

God has declared that “the wicked shall be turned into hell” (Psalm 9:17). Jesus told of a man who actually went there, and that at the end of a life of self-seeking “in hell he lift up his eyes” (Luke 16:23).

“Happier When Not Happy”

A boy, who had been converted some time, and had known something of restoring grace as well as saving grace and keeping grace, on being taunted by a companion as being miserable, replied, “Why, I am happier now when I am not happy, than ever I was before when I was happy!”

The lowest level of Christian life is better than the highest plane of the worldling’s life. “Happy is that people whose Cod is the Lord” (Psalm 144:15).
