BIBLE QUIZ

Dear Boys and Girls,

Several of you have been asking about another crossword puzzle, so this month we have one again for you. As you will probably remember, the latest crossword puzzles have been based on the Heidelberg Catechism. The texts which you find alongside the Catechism in the back of your Psalters are used for many of the answers, so you do have lots of clues. In each case where one of these texts is used, we have marked the question with an asterisk (*).

We have come to Lord’s Day 5 of the Catechism. The previous Lord’s Days have taught us about the misery of man because of the fall in Paradise. Nobody likes or looks for misery, but we cannot hide from it. All mankind come into the world in a state of misery. This can be hard to believe when we look at newborn babies, but it can soon be seen in all that takes place in their lives.

The Catechism instructor said in Lord’s Day 4 that punishment is due us. Do we really believe this? Are we that bad? We only really believe it if the Lord by His Holy Spirit teaches us this. But then we may also ask Him to teach us what we are, praying with that little kitchen-maid, “Lord, show me myself.”

If we may learn something about our misery, then we will also ask about and look for a way to escape the pun- “ ishment, the way to be delivered from our misery and to be again in God’s favor. That is what we hear in the fifth Lord’s Day of the Catechism. It is something we all need. May the Lord teach us together as we search His Word for answers.

Again there are letters to answer—

Patricia Kerkhoff

We have had some snow this winter, Patricia,

Cindy Kreft

Yes, Cindy, holidays are always nice, but they too seem to fly by. We in the United States do not have Boxing Day, but there are holidays here which you do not observe in Canada. We hope your parents and family are all well. Be sure to give them our greetings.

John Den Hertog

We are doing quite well, John. It is always nice to hear from our friends, since otherwise they are only a name on the list. Through the letters we learn to know them and their families. How is school going for you? A few more months and the school year will again be at an end.

Aline Bosch

Have you ever been to Holland, Aline? When flying from New Zealand, do you usually fly east or west to go there? Since you are almost on the other side of the world from Holland, distance cannot be much difference. What are you studying in school this year?

Leanne Neels

We were very sorry to hear that your grandfather had died Leanne. We see again how quickly and unexpectedly it can happen. The poet prayed, “O teach Thou us to count our days and set our hearts on wisdom’s ways.” It is a prayer for all of us, even if we are not so old.

Trevor Aleman

You have a musical family, Trevor. I am sure it sounds nice when you are playing your instruments together, and the rest of the family sings. As the weather turns nice again, we hear the birds sing their songs, and how much more should we be singing the praises of the Lord in our homes.

Derek Kreft

Making a robot should be an interesting project, Derek. What will it be capable of doing? If I recall correctly, when the inventor of wireless transmission sent his first message for some distance, he said, “What hath God wrought.” This we must also say of the many inventions of today.

Julia Neels

It is always possible that we get our snow in the latter part of the winter, Julia, but there are days when you would think that spring is arriving early. However, in one of our psalters we sing, “The seasons are fixed by wisdom divine,” and therefore never come too early or too late.

Charmain Huisman

Many thanks for your good wishes, Charmain. Having begun a new year and a new decade, we often look forward with great expectation. However, if we look back at the pages of the past, we will see that they have all been blackened by our sins. There is much reason to pray, “Lord, wash me, make me clean within.”

Leanne Les

Everyone likes to receive gifts, I think, Leanne. In the Bible we also read of gifts which were given. Can you think of some examples of this? The wonderful thing about the gifts which the Lord gives is that they are given to those who do not deserve them. That is hard to understand, isn’t it?

Trina Huisman

So now you have another cousin, Trina. It is always a wonderful event when a baby is born into a family. If it is a healthy child, everyone is happy and thankful. But it can also be different. In the Banner of Truth which we have just received, mention is made of two little babies, both less than a year old, who were taken away by death. Then there is truly sadness.

Elise Vander Spek

I am sure you have found your name in the Banner of Truth now, Elise. Unfortunately, the names are always one month behind, and that makes you think you were overlooked. Did you like the crossword puzzle of this month? Some of the boys and girls tell me that they like those the best.

Gary Neels

Do you have quite a few papers to deliver, Gary? Delivering papers certainly gives you lots of exercise and fresh air, but it is no fun when there is quite a lot of snow. But, just like the mailman, you have a job to do.

Cynthia Huisman

When we think of those who have no family, Cynthia, we can really understand what a great blessing it is to have father and mother, brothers and sisters, and other relatives. From the Bible we can see that troubles can come between members of a family, but we must pray that the Lord keep us in love together.

Again many thanks, boys and girls, for your answers to the quiz. It keeps me busy, but it is a pleasure to see your replies arrive day after day. May the Lord grant each of us the wisdom we need as we travel through this year. With love,

Your friend,

“Uncle Garret”

EXALTING HIS NAME

Archbishop Usher and Dr. Preston, well known for their piety and learning, were very close friends, and often met to converse on science and knowledge generally. On these occasions it was very common for the Archbishop to conclude thus, “Come, doctor, let us say something about Christ before we part.”

So ought it ever be, if “Christ is all and in all” (Col. 3:11).

BEGINNING AT THE END

A little girl was dying; the doctor came in, and after examining her quietly remarked to the nurse, “Her life is just finishing.” The little girl opened her eyes and looking at him said, “No doctor, it is just beginning.”

Rev. John Owen lay on his deathbed dictating a letter to his secretary who wrote, “Dear friend, I am still in the land of the living…”

“No, stop, change that! Let’s start over.” Owen then stated, “Dear friend, I am yet in the land of the dying, but I hope soon to be in the land of the living.”

STATESMAN OR SINNER

Daniel Webster, the famous American politician and orator, once spent a summer in New Hampshire, and every Lord’s day went to a little country church morning and evening. His niece asked him why he went there, when he paid little attention to far abler sermons in Washington.

He replied: “In Washington they preach to Daniel Webster, the statesman, but this man has been telling Daniel Webster, the sinner, of Jesus of Nazareth.”

“All have sinned” (Rom. 3:23), and need the only Savior.

TWO BOYS LOST

Two boys were playing on the banks of a river in Glasgow. One fell in, the other tried to rescue him. Both were drowned, were retrieved, and were buried together.

One of the fathers knew his boy was saved and “sorrowed,” yet “not as others which have no hope” (1 Thess. 4:13); the other father felt his boy was unconverted, and could only wail like David—”My son, my son, would God I had died for thee” (2 Sam. 18:33). Dear boys and girls, if you were to die now, would you be mourned “with hope” or “without hope”?

THE SURGEON AND THE CHILD

A little girl was to undergo an operation. The physician said to her as he was about to place her upon the operating table, “Before we can make you well we must put you to sleep.” The little girl looking up said, “Oh, if you are going to put me to sleep, I must say my prayers first.” Then she knelt, and said:

Now 1 lay me down to sleep,

I pray Thee, Lord, my soul to keep;

If I should die before I wake,

I pray Thee, Lord, my soul to take.

The surgeon said afterwards that he prayed that night for the first time in thirty years.

“A little child shall lead them” (Isa. 11:6). “In all thy ways acknowledge Him” (Prov. 3:6).

PRAYER

Prayer changes impotence into omnipotence; for commanding the resources of divinity, there is nothing it cannot do, and there is nothing it need want. It has just two limits. The first is, that its range is confined to the promises; but, within these, what a bank of wealth, what a mine of mercies, what a store of blessings! The second is, that God will grant or deny our requests as is best for His glory and our good. And who that knows how we are, in a sense, but children, would wish it otherwise?

READING SCRIPTURE TOGETHER

The wife of a sceptic became interested in the question of personal salvation. When he found her regularly reading the Bible, he said, “I will give you enough of that. I will read the Bible to you every day till you are sick of it.” And he began. Day by day when he came home he read the Bible, chapter after chapter, having his wife sit and listen. At last one day, when he had finished the third chapter of John, he said to his wife, “Won’t you pray for me? I am a poor lost sinner.” They knelt and prayed together, and read the Word together (Jn. 6:63).
